Claus to Celebrate What a team! Seven years ago the Lord brought Bob to our congregation and blessed us with an associate pastor who brought new dimensions and insights to our team. His years of experience and phenomenal abilities in caring for people were demonstrated time and time again in our life together.

Bob challenged us to look at things from different perspectives and offered fresh ways of processing ideas. Together we've made a good team.

For now, let us focus on thanking Bob and Joyce and celebrating all the blessings God has given us through them. Let us make sure we send them off in a way that they know our gratitude and love for them. There will be a time for us to process next steps in discerning what we want in a future associate pastor and to find that person. But not now.

Now we focus on sending Bob and Joyce out fully equipped and fully loved as our missionaries.

As Bob retires from parish ministry and moves toward becoming a chaplain, I am confident that his new calling is of the Lord. It is clear that his gifting and heart are perfect for such a ministry of compassion. It is also a tribute to you, the people of Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, as we send out another missionary for the Kingdom of God. You stand in a great company of churches, dating back to the church in Antioch, who in response to God's call broke up their teams in confirmation of the Lord's plan and need for workers in the harvest. In the mix of emotions and thoughts around the sending, there is the undergirding affirmation that God has called Bob to the new adventure as a chaplain.

"What of Desert Hills?" some have asked. We still have an awesome team! I cannot express enough how blessed I am to work with people such as God has gathered here. The team knows how to step up and step in where needed and you, the congregation, have always done the same. I have no worries for us or anxiety around our capabilities to face this transition. God also undergirds us at Desert Hills as he has over the many years.

and you will be able to make a basic set of Mary, Joseph, Jesus and some extra pieces as time allows.

Please call or email Diane Hillwig to sign up for this class, as Ron can only accommodate 10-12 people who are creating sets for the first time.

If you participated in the nativity workshop last year and want to make another set or additional pieces for your existing set, we can accommodate 8 people in this separate group.

Music Camp on the Reservation

Our 5th year of partnering with the Leupp church to offer music camp at a location on the Navajo Reservation was a great success!

We spent Friday evening and Saturday Aug 14th and 15th in Tuba City, teaching voice, guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and drum lessons. It was an awesome time of worship, learning and fellowship!

Music And Arts Festival Coming February 20 & 21

The annual Music and Arts Festival is in the planning stages, but the dates are set for Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21. We hope you will join us for a wonderful opportunity to let your inner creative self shine! Watch for more details in early January, but keep the weekend dates open!

Community Bible Study is on the Move!

Beginning Wednesday, October 8th, 9:30 - 11:30 am Join us as we journey with God’s people of the Old Testament. As you make your way through Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, you’ll see the big picture of God’s work in history and be inspired by the examples of some of His chosen servants who played significant roles in fulfilling His purposes in the world.

Community Bible Study (CBS) meets at DHPC Wednesdays, 9:30—11:30 am, starting October 8.

This is a Co-Ed class.

Heirloom Nativity Set Making is Back November 8 & 15! Book Your Spot Now!

Are you interested in creating a nativity set from clay? YES, you can do it! Last year we offered this class, and those who tried it were thrilled with their creations.

We will offer this workshop on two consecutive Saturday mornings, November 8th and 15th from 9 a.m. until about noon. You must attend both sessions to complete the project.

Completed pieces will be available to pick up on Friday, November 21 from 12 noon until 5 p.m. (or by prior arrangement.)

Angel Workshop Coming November 8th: Seating is Limited, Reserve Your Spot Now! This is similar to the nativity set workshop, but will be focused entirely on angels. We will be creating porcelain angels, glazed in a clear satin glaze, which can be used as decorations or gifts.

We will hold one workshop on Saturday, November 8th beginning at 1 p.m. The cost will be $8 and we expect that each person will have time to make about five angels in varying sizes.

The entire project can be completed in one session. There is a limit of 10 people for this workshop, so don’t delay in making a reservation!

SHARING THANKSGIVING: HELP US DELIVER 450 “FIXIN’ BAGS” FOR FOOTHILLS FOOT BANK For the last two years our congregation has supported Foothills Food Bank by providing them with “fixin’ bags”—grocery kits that can be given to needy families to allow them to prepare a Thanksgiving meals—during the Thanksgiving season. With DHPC’s help, 825 bags have been given to local struggling families.

12 Items needed for Thanksgiving “Fixin’ Bags:" • Mashed Potatoes (box or bag of dried) • Turkey Gravy (can or jar) • Yams/Sweet Potatoes (canned) • Stuffing (box or bag)

This Thanksgiving we have a goal of donating 450 fixin’ bags through DHPC. One of DHPC’s covenant groups is ready to lead our congregation in serving our local community with this project.

We challenge our congregation to join us in helping provide these ‘fixin bags’ in one (or more) of three easy ways:

• Pumpkin Pie Filling (canned) • Evaporated Milk (canned)

• Monetary gifts of $15 for each bag. Please mark your donation “fixin bags,” and we will shop for you!

• Pie Crust Mix (boxed) • Box of Jell-O

• Fill bags yourself: see list of items below, bags are available on the patio after Sunday services • Assist in assembly of bags once the shopping is done.

Please open your hearts and share your Thanksgiving table with as many needy families as possible. Filled bags and/ or money can be brought to the church patio every Sunday between October 1 and November 16th. You may also sign up on the patio for helping with bag assembly on specific dates.

TROOP CARE MINISTRY NEWS + EVENTS CAREFREE SOLDIER RIDE 2014, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 9 – 11AM

Desert Hills is thrilled to once again host the annual Carefree Soldier Ride, a part of a unique bicycling program offered by Wounded Warrior Project for retired service members who have sustained injuries, both visible and unseen, since September 11, 2001.

We need your help to get the word out so we can line the streets to cheer and salute the warriors as they ride by, and to show our appreciation for the sacrifices they have made for us and our country. Posters and flyers may be picked up in the church office for distribution to your friends and the local businesses you support, or printed off from the church’s website. Check in with the church’s Facebook page to see where others have posted signs and what they are doing to make the day special!

Please note: Because of the need for privacy and personal space for the riders, the starting, resting, and stopping points will not be accessible to spectators. WWP has requested that the route not be published, for the safety of the riders.

VETERANS DINNER, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 4 – 6PM

Our special speaker will be Dr. Sheldon Winkler, an expert on the music of the Second World War. Dr. Winkler attended school during WW II, when he was required to learn the lyrics to war-songs. War songs were played on radios and records in homes, in movies, and at stores.

Dr. Winkler collects the music of WW II and has published articles on this subject in History Magazine.

After his retirement from a distinguished career in dentistry and education at Temple University, he achieved his goal of publishing a book in 2013 titled "The Music of World War II: War Songs & Their Stories."

This year, instead of tickets, dinner reservations will be taken in the church office, and on the patio November 2nd. Please call Donna at 480.488.3384 right away, as this popular event packs the Fellowship Center.

HOST AN AIRMAN/AIRWOMAN FOR THANKSGIVING DINNER

Airmen/women from Luke Air Force Base who live in the barracks cannot “go home” for Thanksgiving.

CHRISTMAS CARE PACKAGES

The Christmas holiday is an important time to remember our active military service members. During the month of November, we will be collecting donations of supplies and goodies, and funds for postage for Christmas Care Packages.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

"Holiday Cards for Heroes", a Red Cross program, is an easy and great way for all of us to show we care. During the month of November, a box will be placed in the Narthex, and Sundays on the patio, where everyone may drop off Christmas cards that will be delivered to service members in hospitals, stationed throughout the US and abroad, as well as to veterans and their families.

You may sign a card that we will have at the TCM table on the patio during the month of November, or bring a stack of signed cards from home. The specific guidelines for these cards, such as "cards only, no envelopes," can be found on the DHPC website, or picked up at the patio table. SHARING THE LORD WITH OTHERS! NEW DHPC EVANGELISM COMMITTEE FOCUS

Stephen Ministry Serving God by Serving Others

We are excited about Desert Hills’ new ministry for sharing the Gospel with friends, co-workers, neighbors and relatives!

We feel called to respond to the most important outreach the Bible says we could ever do! That is, using our own personalities to not only be Christ to others, but to share who Christ is.

Please join us on Mondays at 2:00 pm in the choir room for prayer, sharing and discussion of both good old evangelism outreach and gentle approaches all of us can use to share a relationship with Christ.

When God puts someone in need right in front of us, He is giving us the opportunity to grow in servanthood. We miss many occasions for serving because we lack sensitivity and spontaneity.

Great opportunities to serve never last long. They pass quickly, sometimes never to return again. We may only get one chance to serve that person, so take advantage of the moment.

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

A real servant does what’s needed, even when it’s inconvenient. John Wesley was an incredible servant of God. His motto was: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, as long as you ever can.”

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

We can begin by looking for small tasks that no one else wants to do. Do these little things as if they were great things. The size of the task is irrelevant. The only issue is, does it need to be done. It is in these small services that we grow like Christ.

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

God expects us to do what we can, with what we have, wherever we are. Less-than-perfect is always better than the best intention.

Knowing Your Care Ministry Team One of the hallmarks of the Christian church is the capacity of God’s people to care for one another and strangers. The sign of God’s everlasting love and care is the Cross of Christ, which can be seen on many churches to this day. But the most important sign of God’s love and care is how well a congregation and its members provide care for its members, new visitors, and even strangers. As our Lord said, "They will know you are my disciples by your love."

So it is important that you know Your Care Ministry Team members. They have been trained and encouraged to reach out to you. Now, it is important that you reach out and respond to them as channels of God’s grace and mercy.

Over the last seven years, the Care Ministry here has grown, changed, and is flourishing because of the Care Ministry Team members’ willingness to serve and care. The recent organizational change in the Deacon Board was designed to distribute the care ministry load among the Care Ministry Team members: Deacon Care Council, Deacons, Stephen Ministers, Parish Shepherds, and our Congregational Nurse.

And Pastor Jim will be available but he will be relying on this Care Team.

Deacon Care Council is a newly Session approved component of the overall Care Ministry overseen by the Board of Deacons. The Care Council members are those Deacons, Stephen Ministers, and pastors who review all the known care needs of our members on a bimonthly basis. Depending on what kind of care is needed by members and friends, the members of the Care Council assign, direct, and coordinate care through Deacon Ministry Teams, Stephen Ministers, and Parish Shepherds. The members of the Care Council are: Pastor Jim Noble and Youth Minister Kevin Deasy; Stephen Minster Leaders, Barbara Conti and Steven Haver; Deacon Ministry Team leader for Parish Shepherds, Bev Shannon; Deacon Ministry Team leader for Services, Myra Sherriff; and Congregational Nurse, Mary Kay Thurston.

Congregational Nurse Mary Kay Thurston is a Registered Nurse licensed in Arizona and has been trained to be a Congregational Nurse by Duet, a regional governing body that oversees all Congregational Nurses. Mary Kay is a volunteer who is available to any member who is ill and wants advice on treatment or good information on health issues and care of a loved one. She can be reached at 480-220-6679.

Deacons are now organized into Ministry Teams that oversee different aspects of the Care Ministry. Here are the Ministry Teams and their members serving on the Board of Deacons: Service Ministry Team members are responsible for offering and providing meals to home-bound; organizing the Memorial Service reception meal; finding transportation for specific needs; and household repairs through volunteers. All numbers are cell phones unless notated with an H for home.

Three years ago, we mapped out where all our members and friends live in the neighborhoods around us and into Phoenix. We divided all that geography into “parishes”, that is, neighborhoods and areas where you, our members, live.

In each geographic area, we have a parish shepherd. That shepherd is a person who reaches out to know you as a neighbor and fellow Christian for the purpose of letting you know that we care for you. Our parish shepherd, the parishes they live in are numbered, and phone numbers are listed here:

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign held in October. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with two founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During NBCAM, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives of both women and men.

The following are some of the American Cancer Society programs that are available to achieve these goals including: National Cancer Information Center: Trained Cancer Information Specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to offer the comfort of live support, answer questions about cancer, link callers with resources in their communities, and provide information on local events. Email National Cancer Information Center: The American Cancer Society’s email center is a cancer information service that allows cancer patients, their families, and the public to ask questions about cancer and receive prompt and unbiased information from a Cancer Information Specialist or an oncology nurse. The American Cancer Society also encourages regular breast exams and mammograms to find breast cancer early, when it is most likely to be curable. The screening reminder is a free, easy way to help busy women remember to take care of themselves.

November is National American Diabetes Month The vision of the American Diabetes Association is a life free of diabetes and all of its burdens. Raising awareness of this evergrowing disease is one of the main efforts behind the mission of the Association.

American Diabetes Month® (ADM) is an important element in this effort, with programs designed to focus the nation's attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and the many people who are impacted by the disease.

Here are just a few of the recent statistics on diabetes: • Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.

However, some people with Type 2 diabetes have a condition characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body's inability to use insulin efficiently, call insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older adults but can appear in young people who have symptoms so mild that they go unnoticed.

Common symptoms of diabetes:

• Another 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but are not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.

• Urinating often

• People with pre-diabetes are at increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes and for heart disease and stroke.

• Extreme fatigue

• Feeling very thirsty • Feeling very hungry - even though you are eating • Blurry vision • Cuts/bruises which are slow to heal

• Other names for pre-diabetes are impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, a condition characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body's inability to use insulin efficiently.

FALL ADULT DISCIPLESHIP OPPORTUNITES ABOUND! Luther’s Large Catechism Led by Rev. Jim Noble October 2-November 20 Thursdays 7:00-8:30 pm in the Conference Room

Through the years, Martin Luther has been one of the most read authors of the Christian Faith. This fall Rev. Jim Noble will be teaching a class on Luther’s Large Catechism.

This class will explore the five chief statements of Christian beliefs: the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

The book for this class will be Martin Luther’s Large and Small Catechism published by Create Space and translated by F. Bente and W.H.T. Dau. Please purchase the book for this class on your own and read the preface prior to the first class meeting.

"The Mystery of the Trinity"

Led by Dave Hulbert, EPC Elder October 12-November 23 Sundays at 8:30 am in the flex room A study for all believers based on the Holy Scripture and a book

by Alistere McGrath, a noted theology scholar and writer on the faculty of Oxford.

The book is 152 pages and 10 chapters long, named "Understanding the Trinity." The study is designed to help us to understand the context and history of the doctrine. If you already understand the Trinity, then you don’t need this study, in fact you’re not of this world!

We will all hope to further encounter the Spirit of God and His teaching.

"The Truth Project"

Led by Bob and Karen Mock October 19-January 11 Sunday mornings at 11:00am in the Choir Room “The Truth Project” is a DVDbased curriculum comprised of 13 one-hour lessons. This study is an excellent starting point for looking at life from a Biblical perspective. We will compare and contrast the Biblical worldview (God’s truths) to that of the “any-thing-goes” worldview of today’s society (the lies of the world).

"The Prodigal God "

Led by Pastor Bob Mondays from 3:30 – 5pm in the Choir Room October 13th – 27th "The Prodigal God" by Timothy Keller, Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in NY City, is a wonderful study of the well-known parable by Jesus, often called the Prodigal Son. Taking a fresh perspective on this parable, Keller introduces readers to new insights on both the younger and elder brother’s relationship to the Father.

You are invited to come to one or all the classes. Please buy the book and read in advance of the first class. It is good reading, not hard to understand.

Class style includes brief presentations, conversation, questions and answers, and sharing of insights for our Christian life and the life of the church.
