WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members. Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn

Why Do We Celebrate Reformation Sunday? edited from an article by R. Bruce Douglass, Director, Reformed Institute of Metropolitan Washington
The Protestant Reformation is one of the most important developments that has taken place in the entire history of the Christian church. It began early in the 16th century with a series of actions taken by a German monk named Martin Luther who loved the Bible and came to believe that the church of his day was not faithful to the teaching of Scripture. Luther went public with his criticism by posting a series of 95 “theses” on the door of the castle church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517. In the years that followed, Luther took many actions that departed dramatically from the established religious practice of the day and the example he set was soon followed by people in many other parts of Europe. As early as the 1520’s the proponents of church reform had split into factions, and it was not long before those factions turned into organized movements that were known by such labels as “Lutheran,” “Anabaptist,” and “Reformed.” The Reformed movement, which is the source of Presbyterianism, arose out of the work of such figures as Ulrich Zwingli (a Germanspeaking Swiss priest), John Calvin (a French lawyer turned pastor who spent most of his life in the Swiss canton of Geneva), and John Knox (a Scottish priest)—all of whom were Luther’s contemporaries. The members of this movement soon got into the habit of characterizing their cause as “Reformed” to indicate that they were prepared to go farther than most other “Protestants” (including Luther’s followers) in changing the church. In their minds, however, all the changes they had in mind— from the involvement of lay people in the governance of the church, the elimination of bishops, and the removal of all “graven images” from places of worship—were the fruit of their desire to be faithful to Scripture and return the church to its original form.

New Women's Bible Study The One: Reaching the Lost with the Love of Christ This 4 week class will be offered 2 times each week so choose what fits your schedule: Beginning Monday, Nov. 1st at 6:30 PM via zoom OR Beginning Thursday, Nov. 4th at 10:00 AM at the church & on zoom A little about the study... "As believers, we are called to share the love and message of Christ with those who don’t know him. We mean to share Christ, we really do. But then we get busy with other things even as the church! But what if a subtle shift in focus could reignite a passion within you and your church for reaching the lost? This study explores Luke 15, where Jesus tells three stories about rejoicing when lost things are found specifically, a lost sheep, a lost coin, and two lost sons. First, we will discover that we are “the One” who is dearly loved and sought after by God, and then we will join together in Jesus’s mission to seek after “the One” in our own lives with intentionality, perseverance, and joy. This study is not about taking people on as a project no one wants that. It’s about rediscovering the heart of God and his passion for going after those who are far from him." Please purchase your book before class begins. For more information or to register please contact Kathleen Harris at kharris@deserthills.org / 602-741-3429. page 13
