SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY October 25, 2020, 8:15AM/9:45AM

PRELUDE

Prelude in e Minor, BuxWV 142 Natalie Mealey, organ

D. Buxtehude

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People:

Jesus entered into Jerusalem humbly on a donkey, seeking to transform the people. People gathered from everywhere to wave palm branches and praise him as royalty. Jesus enters into our lives humbly, seeking to transform our hearts and lives. Let us worship Jesus Christ together, and receive him into our presence. Hosanna in the highest!

Leader: People:

#300

All Glory, Laud, and Honor

1. All glory, laud, and honor To Thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. Thou art the King of Israel, Thou David’s royal Son, Who in the Lord's name comest, The King and Blessed One.

2. The company of angels Are praising Thee on high, And mortal men and all things Created make reply. The people of the Hebrews With palms before Thee went; Our praise and prayer and anthems Before Thee we present.

3. To Thee, before Thy passion, They sang their hymns of praise; To Thee, now high exalted, Our melody we raise. Thou didst accept their praises; Accept the praise we bring, Who in all good delightest, Thou good and gracious King. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

#813

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord, we often pray, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” However, we tend to be quick to anger, slow to listen, and even slower to forgive. In fact, we are more likely to hold a grudge, harbor resentment, and refuse to come together. Change our hearts O God and make us more like you, who endured mocking, abuse and tortuous pain upon the cross. Yet still you said, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” In Jesus name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader:

All:

It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM

There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy Chancel Choir There's a wideness in God's mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in His justice Which is more than liberty. There is welcome for the sinner And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior; There is healing in His blood.

arr. Schweitzer

There is no place where earth’s sorrows Are more felt than up in heav’n; There is no place where earth’s failings Have such kindly judgement giv’n. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head.

For the love of God is broader Than the measure of the mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more faithful, We should take Him at His word; And our life would be thanksgiving For the goodness of the Lord. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. page 4

SCRIPTURE

Mark 11:1-14

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”’ They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve. The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #139

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

1. Great is Thy faithfulness, O God, my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee. Thou changest not; Thy compassions they fail not. As Thou has been, Thou forever wilt be.

2. Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Refrain

Refrain: Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

3. Pardon for sin and an peace that endureth, Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide. Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow — Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside! Refrain

OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY

The Church’s One Foundation Virtual Choir and Handbells The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the Word: From heav'n He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her And for her life He died.

Though with a scornful wonder Men see her sore oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up: “How long?” And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song.

Elect from every nation, Yet one o’er all the earth, Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food; And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued.

Yet she on earth has union With God, the Three in One, And mystic, sweet communion With those whose rest is won; O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee.

*HYMN #151

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God -in celebration of Reformation Sunday-

1. A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing; Our helper He amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe — His craft and pow'r are great, And armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.

3. And tho' this world with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph thro' us. The prince of darkness grim, We tremble not for him — His rage we can endure, For lo, his doom is sure: One little word shall fell him.

2. Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing, Were not the right man on our side, The man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He — Lord Sabaoth His Name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle.

4. That word above all earthly pow'rs, No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Thro' Him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also — The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still: His kingdom is forever.

ARE YOU IN NEED OF PRAYER? DO YOU HAVE A JOY TO SHARE? Please submit your prayer request online at deserthills.org. Adversity is a condition of suffering and hardship involving anguish, pressure, trials, heartaches, or disappointments. It may be physical or emotional in nature, and either long or short in duration, but it always causes pain. Although none of us want hurt or trouble, if it comes, we have two options. We can waste our sorrows or grow in our relationship with the Lord. Spiritual growth in adversity depends on several factors; one of which is to equip us to comfort others. That is where your Walking Beside ministers can make a difference -- meeting your need by providing care, compassion, community, and a listening ear. Give us a call.

The Clan of Christ for 38 Years at Leupp

at DHPC

Join the Virtual Fall Faith Festival with Leupp. Share Your Covid-19 God Sightings. The Lord has brought DHPC and Leupp together in ministry as the Clan of Christ for 38 years showing the world how to be “One in Christ”. For the first time we will fail to visit each other at least twice annually in worship, ministry, and friendship. We missed our annual spring trip to Leupp, so we posted a love message on the Hope Resurrected Facebook page. There we shared our prayers and fond memories of good times together. Now is when we would normally invite our Leupp brothers and sisters in Christ to worship with us and participate in our Fall Faith Festival. Instead, we are having a virtual gathering by sharing stories of how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our lives and ministries. Suggested topics include: God sightings we have witnessed during the Coronavirus. How we are staying sane with lockdowns, masks, and social distancing? How the kids are coping with the social distancing? How the kids and college students are going to school? How we are staying connected to the community during COVID-19 ? How we are connecting with Friends and Family during COVID-19 ? What insights we have made during COVID-19 ? How we have engaged in ministry during COVID-19? Stories from DHPC and Leupp will be assembled in a video posted on the DHPC and HR Facebook pages. You are invited to tell your story.

To participate in our virtual gathering with Leupp, contact Chuck Starnes for more information. email: cstarnes33@gmail.com or text: 623-261-8969

JOIN THE BOOK CLUB! Saturday, Nov. 21st, 6:00pm at the Nichols’ Residence New members or others who just want to discuss the book, are welcome to join us in reviewing “The Paris Architect” by Charles Belfoure

Life has changed so we are having to change with it (with God’s help!). Eight years ago, the church began filling bags of food containing the necessary items to make a complete dinner, to give to the Foothills Food Bank for their Thanksgiving Turkey distribution. The last two years we gave out small bags for financial donations and the Food Bank purchased the food. Due to Covid, we will not be giving out small fixin’ bags but ask that you consider making donations directly to the church with a notation on the memo line of the check, “Fixin Bags”. The need for food is still GREAT in our community so let’s dig deep in our pockets and keep our giving going from DHPC. Money will be collected from NOW until Nov. 12. Questions? Contact Pat Nichols 480.595.5751 God has blessed us in so many ways at DHPC! “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” -Luke 12:48b

A mask or face shield must be worn when you are entering the building, during the worship service and the entire time you are on the church campus (bring one from home or one will be provided). For those who are unable to wear a mask or face shield due to medical reasons, The Session feels that you are safer at home.
