Pastor’s Message Jim Noble, Senior Pastor

jnoble@deserthills.org 480-488-3384

Rediscovering the Heart's Passion The moment was brief but powerful. He said, “By nature we humans want to avoid pain and suffering. We put a tremendous amount of energy and resources into avoiding suffering. Even the persona that we project into the world is often about our attempts to avoid suffering and show that we are not suffering. There is nothing wrong with wanting to avoid suffering except when we fail to go deeper. For just below the external efforts to avoid suffering is the soul’s passion. The passion of the soul is that for which one is willing to suffer. For what are you willing to suffer?’” Our fore parents rediscovered their soul’s passion, their heart’s passion, when they rediscovered the fullness of God’s grace, faith, hope, and love for us in Jesus Christ. The discovery first revealed God’s soul and the passion of the Lord’s heart by showing that for which he was willing to suffer, namely US! In that moment the Gospel was once again good news for humanity. God’s passion for them ignited a passion within them for the Lord; a willingness to suffer and even die for the truth of God’s love and to suffer in order to extend that grace, faith, hope, and love to others.

As we prepare to celebrate the 500th anniversary of that rediscovery known as the Reformation, we pray that it will not simply be a celebration of an historical event. We pray for and seek our own rediscovery of God’s passion for the world and us. We desire that our own hearts be re-ignited to a passionate love for the Lord and others. We pray that we may find new ways to share our passion with family, friends, and neighbors. Jesus said, “By this all people will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Happy Anniversary and Peace in Christ,

Jim

Session Updates CARE MINISTRY

The current Care Ministry at DHPC is many-faceted. Like the Body of Christ, each part works together, functioning as a whole, to meet the care needs of our church members. It is made up of the Care Council (Pastors and Congregational Nurses), Parish Shepherds, Visitation, Prayer and Meals Ministry. When a church member is experiencing a difficult time in their life, they may call on their church family for help. The channel can start at any of these ministry points, branching out as we communicate to each other the need to be met. For example, a church member may call the church office, (or Pastor, Nurse, Prayer Line, Parish Shepherd), and let them know about a fall/hospitalization event. This starts a chain of communication and action—per the member’s request/permission—to meet the need. They would receive a visit from one of the Pastors or Nurses for prayer and support, potentially followed by meals, continued pastoral/ nursing visits, prayer, etc.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE

DHPC Welcomes Jeffrey Anthony as Traditional Music Director. We are excited to welcome Jeffrey Anthony to DHPC! His first Sunday with DHPC was September 24, and we welcomed him with a reception on the patio. At DHPC, Jeffrey will be responsible for the Handbell Choir, Chancel Choir, and working with members and friends of DHPC to develop and use their musical talents. In addition, he will be helping to pull together a musical outreach program to the community through lessons, performances, and other opportunities. Jeffrey has had success working with youth instrumentalists, dramatically increasing youth participation in every congregation he has served, largely through instrumental ensembles. This expertise will blend well with our vision for outreach, discipleship, and worship through music and arts as we seek to build a music ministry program for all ages.

The Care Ministry functions as the hands, feet, and heart of Christ, spreading God’s love through our care for each other in times of need. In future Echoes, we will share more of the Deacons' story.

Veronica Fuller

performance major, and Jonathan is beginning high school. Jeffrey’s wife and son will join Jeffrey here in Arizona once their home is sold. Did we mention we are asking for prayer? Please give Jeffrey a warm DHPC welcome when you have the opportunity to meet him! “I am eager to begin my new position at DHPC. I was able to worship with you one Sunday in August and had the pleasure of meeting some of you already. The warm reception I received from you, as well as the incredible hospitality from the search committee and staff, were instrumental (no pun intended) in my decision to join you in ministry. I am excited at all the new possibilities and opportunities to love and praise the Lord at DHPC and in the community. Gail and I met (in church choir!) while we were both living in Phoenix— back in the previous century. We were married here and our daughter, Juliana, was born here before we departed on an adventure of seminary and beyond. Gail’s parents, sister, and niece all live in the area, so it is nice to return ‘home,’ where we have family and friends. We are looking forward to including you all in that category.” Soli Deo gloria,

We ask that you pray for Jeffrey, his wife Gail, and their two children Juliana and Jonathan. Gail works from home doing medical software support, a job she began in Scottsdale years ago and has been able to continue through several moves. Juliana just started at ASU as a trombone

"TIME TO TALK TURKEY"

DHPC has joined again with the Foothills Food Bank in providing food to accompany Thanksgiving turkeys given to over 450 families in our community. These bags of food are called “Fixin’ Bags.” They contain 12 different items such as stuffing, gravy, yams, green beans, etc. Since 2012, DHPC has donated 2,366 bags containing these 12 items. What a blessing and an outpouring of giving from DHPC. God has called us to share our time, talent and resources. DHPC again will step up and continue giving to the hungry people of Cave Creek/Carefree. Beginning October 1, paper bags will be available on the patio for you to take and fill with the listed items. If you prefer, financial donations are also accepted, $15 per bag. A covenant group and volunteers will purchase items and fill bags. Yes, we have hungry people right here in our own backyard. Let’s begin thinking “Turkey” and commit to joining us this fall in serving our Lord and His hungry children.

THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION: YOUR LIVING 500 YEAR LEGACY OF BELIEFS AND FREEDOMS On October 31, we will celebrate 500 years as the inheritors of the Systematic Theology of the Reformation. Firmly rooted in The Bible and articulated by many inspired scholars such as Augustine of the 4th Century and more recently by Martin Luther and John Calvin of the 16th. This is not an obsolete, dusty or irrelevant event, but a living God breathed foundational set of beliefs which affect our daily walk with and worship of the Lord. Their courage and sacrifice gained us freedoms that we take for granted as rights. As a result, we have Bibles to study in our own language, freedom of Bible study in our homes, the freedom of interpretation by the power of the Holy Spirit, freedom from the oppression of any inquisition. We are free from financial demands or oppression by a distant foreign hierarchy of thought police. We have direct access to our sovereign Lord by confession, prayer or worship. We must never imagine that these freedoms are trivial. As the world news testifies almost daily, religious oppression and

intolerance by fanatics in the Middle East are a reality. Our witness to the World is more important than perhaps any time in Our history. We all must endeavor to understand and be ready to instruct in our own beliefs. This legacy is meant to be passed on to the World not hidden. We have been called to make “More people More like Christ.” In His Service,

Dave Hulbert Member, Adult Ministries

GRACE IS GREATER

KICKS OFF DHPC’S YEAR OF GRACE Where did you witness grace this week? How did you extend grace to others? In his book, Grace Is Greater, Kyle Idleman challenges us to better understand grace by experiencing it and by recognizing it in everyday life. Through powerful stories of changed lives and a wonderful sense of humor he shows us how Grace Is Greater than our mistakes, than our hurts, than our circumstances. The DHPC Session has chosen to focus on Grace for the coming year. Many of our Covenant Groups will be doing this fiveweek Grace Is Greater study this fall. If you’re not part of a Covenant Group yet or your group is doing something else, we invite you to be part of one of the following studies: "Jesus was so full of grace, it just spilled out of him on everyone around him" (from "Grace Is Greater"). Our goal at DHPC is "More people...more like Christ." May we all be filled to overflowing with grace! Please call the Church Office if you are interested in the "Grace Is Greater" study.

DEDICATION SUNDAY & MINISTRY FAIR OCTOBER 22: HOW ARE YOU CALLED TO SERVE?

NEW VISITORS! You, yes you, make a tremendous difference when you smile and say hello to a new face. That is extremely welcoming to our visitors and thus they are not only spoken to upon arrival but also welcomed in the church, in the pews and on the patio. We on the Outreach Team need your smiles and greetings. We also invite you to join our team in sharing how special our DHPC is at making people feel at home.

So you see that Abraham’s faith and the things he did worked together. His faith was made perfect by what he did.

Ministry Fair coming October 22

- James 2:22 Winter Music & Arts Fair

The Winter Music & Arts Fair, sponsored by members of our Music & Arts committee, is a wonderful and creative time to share your special talents with others and to learn new crafts (drawing, calligraphy, guitar, singing, Shutterfly books, and more). Everyone enjoys laughter and friendship as we teach and learn from each other.

Mentor DHPC’s Scout Troop 603

Many of our members have stepped up to volunteer to help OUR (DHPC’s) Scout Troop 603. We have a wide and varied experience level in so many things: aviation, engineering, climbing, fishing, public speaking and on and on. God has blessed us so that we may pass on those blessings to a younger generation.

Cars and Coffee

We have started “Cars and Coffee” and continue on October 21 from 8 to 10 a.m.! Come out and meet the talented “gear heads” in our congregation as well as our communities. You’ll never know who will show up with a cool car and would love to talk with you. Also, the coffee and donuts make it worthwhile to spend a couple hours and have fun on a Saturday morning. Invite your friends and encourage those with children to join in the fun.

DESERT HILLS

ECHOES

These are but a few of the many volunteer opportunities available at DHPC. A number of our wonderful brothers and sisters in Christ graciously give of their time and talent to help out, as well as enjoy fellowship and laughter. Actually, we all need to be involved, each using our unique talents to bring Glory to God, grow deeper in our faith, and to serve our congregation and our community. Fun and opportunity await! On Dedication Sunday, October 22, we will be holding a “Ministry Fair” on the patio between all services. This is your time to stop by a table and talk about your interests and explore ways you may enjoy getting involved. Most opportunities are limited in scope and do not require a lot of time. Perhaps it is a short-term group to plan an activity, contributing your time and ideas to a committee, helping to set and serve at a special event, joining a knitting and crocheting group, packing donations for our troops serving overseas, or taking flowers to a homebound member. As a part of the Stewardship campaign this fall, you will be hearing more about donating your “Time and Talent,” as well as your “Treasure.” This is our year to get every member involved in ministry, connected to our church, and build relationships with each other. A “Time and Talent Contribution” card will be included in the Sunday bulletin on October 22 in conjunction with the Ministry Fair on the patio. We hope you will stop by our booths, visit and ask questions, have some fun and goodies, and sign up! Please consider how you might strengthen your relationship with your church and find a place where God can use you.

DHPC FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES “FOUNDERS FELLOWSHIP” Dear Members and Friends of DHPC, Thanks for those who have committed to being a “Founder”. We now have thirty-six signed up to put the DHPCF into their estate planning in some fashion. For those who have not responded to date, please read, pray and consider signing up for the “Founders” Campaign. See more details below: The Desert Hills Presbyterian Church Foundation (DHPCF) is proud to present the exciting new program for the Foundation called “Founders Fellowship.” We are looking for at least 50 people to declare that they have DHPCF included in their wills and estate planning. The choice of 50 is to celebrate our 50-year anniversary at the church. We are glad to report that we already have over half of our goal signed up in the first few weeks. What do you get? Satisfaction of knowing your funding will continue the legacy of our church. You also become one of the listed members of the “Founders Fellowship,” which will be published each year in our Annual Report.

You do not have to have the process completed in your estate planning documents. Some have indicated that they are in the process of changing or adding to their estate planning. Others have already completed plans. Things to consider: • Charitable Remainder Trusts (make the church the remainder beneficiary) • Put the church in your will for a fixed or percentage amount of your estate or trust • Beneficiary of IRA, or life insurance policy Whether large or small, any donation, current or through your estate planning documents, will be appreciated. Blessings,

David Bell

President, DHPC Foundation

What do you need to do to be included on the list? It’s simple! Just let us know by emailing one of the board members. We will follow up with you for more details.

DESERT HILLS

ECHOES

In July, I spent two glorious weeks in Beirut, Lebanon with the Engage 2025 Team. I can only describe it as HOME! From the sights to the smells, traffic, vegetable markets, and the faces of the people, it was amazing. I landed at midnight on July 8/9th and rose for worship at 9 am. Worship: voices lifted in sweet praise to the King of Kings in an unfamiliar tongue with the notes rising from my ears to Heaven. My heart swelled as I hummed along with this holy choir. Praise transcends all language: Arabic, English, Syrian, Yemeni, and beyond. A kind man behind me offered an iPod translator and then translated the sermon into English for my ear. Thank you, Joseph!

My teammates not only opened their hearts but their homes during my two-week visit. These new brothers and sisters who feel like family—families with babies and more on the way—my family. The focus of Engage 2025 is engaging the 1.5+ million Syrian refugee population of Beirut for Christ. They fled the ravages of the war in Syria with only what they could carry. They now reside in a country where they are not embraced, rather they are simply allowed entrance as a humanitarian gesture. men, women, and children who have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ., a Savior who is their Hope and their Refuge. I had the wonderful opportunity of accompanying Rebecca and Amanda on two home visits in the Syrian community, where we shared a cup of coffee, a smile, and a blessing over two beautiful Syrian women, both named Amal.

In 2 Chronicles 2:3 we read, “Solomon sent this message to Hiram, King of Tyre: “Send me cedar logs as you did for my father David when you sent him cedar to build a palace to live in.” Holy ground. Breathtaking to look upon a 3,000-yearold cedar tree standing atop Mt. Lebanon, reflecting on the construction of the 1st Temple. There the breath of God whispers in the gentle breeze of the mighty cedars. On the evening of July 17, we gathered once again as a team ... time to enjoy breaking the bread, reflections of Lebanon, and an invitation to join the Team in Lebanon. “Lord, You take my breath away with Your goodness and Your abundant blessings.” On August 9th ... “you are formally assigned to the Lebanon team!” My last weekend in Lebanon, we took a road trip (26 miles) on the coast turning southeast towards Bein el Dine, an Ottoman Palace. We left Bein el Dine and continued up Mt. Lebanon to the Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve. When I read 2 Chronicles, I read of these cedars sent by King Hiram to Solomon for the building of the Temple of the Lord. There are cedars in the Reserve which were standing when Solomon walked this ground.

DINNER & OVERNIGHT HOSTS NEEDED NOVEMBER 11

“Espionage & Me: Life as a Senior Intelligence Officer, and How I Got There”

Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

SATURDAY MORNING, DEC. 2nd

Sunday, November 12, Following the 11 am service, join us for a special event to honor all military veterans, reservists, and active duty personnel of DHPC, and of our Navajo sister church, Leupp Presbyterian! Show your support for our troops by wearing the colors of our flag! All veterans and military personnel are invited to attend as guests of Troop Care Ministry, and will be recognized for their service (please make reservations to attend!) This year’s speaker is highly decorated Retired U.S. Army Colonel James Kelsey. He served 29 ½ years in the infantry and Military Intelligence Corps, from 1965 – 1995. He is a former Green Beret, and did two tours of duty in Vietnam, and three in Korea and Germany. He served many years at The Pentagon, and across the U.S. In 1996, he was inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame. Space is limited, and reservations must be made in advance through the church office, or on the patio Sunday, November 5th, between services. Donations will be accepted at the door. (Reservations will be automatically placed for all Navajo guests visiting DHPC on this weekend.) Contact Rhonda Noble at pasttracker65@gmail.com (new email) or 480.433.2870 for more info.

- John 21:16 Looking for a personal and meaningful way to care for others in the name of Christ? We need six Dinner Hosts! Please consider hosting a potluck dinner at your home for several Navajo guests and their Overnight Hosts, on November 11th. Those who are blessed to have guest rooms, please consider helping with sleeping arrangements for our guests, and pitching in on the potluck dinner. Will you open your homes?

DINNER HOSTS

We are looking for 6 hosts in the church to open up their homes to provide, with several DHPC friends, a casual potluck-style dinner for about 10 Navajo guests from about 4:30 – 7:00pm Saturday evening, November the 11th. The evening would be great for a fire pit (or fireplace) to sit around and share stories and get to know one another better!

OVERNIGHT HOSTS

Enjoy dinner and a time to get to know each other (or catch up!) at the home of a Dinner Host. At 7:00pm, lead your Navajo guests home for the evening, to get some much-needed rest. After serving breakfast the next morning, head over to the church for the 1st worship service. ***Homes are needed for singles, married couples, and families.*** To ask questions or to host, please contact: Veronica Fuller, 513.646.3051 veronicafuller@fuse.net or Rhonda Noble, 480.433.2870 pasttracker65@gmail.com.

CANOPIES NEEDED

Do you have a canopy tent that you can loan the church? We are trying to provide as much shade as possible for the upcoming Fall Faith Festival, on Saturday, November 11th. If we can borrow these, this will greatly help lower the cost of the event. The sooner the logistics team knows, the better; please contact Chuck Starnes or Dick Cook. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

2017 SOLDIER RIDE SATURDAY, DEC. 2, 9-11 AM

2- If you don’t live or work along the route:

Due to the change in date by Wounded Warrior Project, and the unavailability of our church parking lot that day, the ride will most likely be staged from the El Pedregal parking lot. DHPC family: Please help! Please help make the town of Carefree and the North Scottsdale communities aware of this upcoming event so they can show their appreciation to our Wounded Warriors. The help of our Desert Hills Members is especially needed to get the word out since the route cannot be published in newspapers for safety reasons. Here’s how you can help:

Spread the word to your friends, coworkers, and neighbors, and arrange to meet at one of five designated locations. Flyers with locations will soon be posted on the Desert Hills website and printed for distribution. 3- Distribute flyers to the local businesses you frequent. Please download the flyer from the Desert Hills website, or request copies be printed off in the church office. Be sure to visit DHPC’s Facebook page to see where flyers are already posted, and to list where you have placed your posters. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR OUR WOUNDED WARRIORS!

1- If you live along the route: With the help of our parish shepherds, those members who live along the route will be informed of their close proximity and asked to help by decorating the route and distributing information to their neighbors. If you are contacted and have questions, or think you may live or work along the route, please contact Rhonda Noble at 480.433.2870 or pasttracker65@gmail. com (note NEW email address).
