SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY First Sunday of Advent November 29, 2020, 9:45AM

PRELUDE

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:

#3

God of Hope, we come into your presence this morning with confidence that you will meet us where we are. Where there is sadness, bring joy; Where there is tiredness, bring refreshment; Where there is despair, bring a renewed sense of hope. Let our hearts be a sanctuary for you, our homes a place for you to reside. Our home a place filled with hope, the hope that is in Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us worship our Lord and Savior together!

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

3. Holy, holy, holy! tho' the darkness hide Thee, Tho' the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see. Only Thou art holy-- there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow'r, in love, in purity.

2. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea. Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy Name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

* HYMN #243

Emmanuel

Bob McGee

Emmanuel, Emmanuel, His name is called Emmanuel; God with us, revealed in us; His name is called Emmanuel. Emmanuel, Emmanuel, His name is called Emmanuel; God with us, revealed in us; His name is called Emmanuel. ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING

HYMN #245, v. 1

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel 1. O come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear. Refrain Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord, we confess that our lips often say, “Thy Kingdom Come,” but our hearts are far from seeking Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. We put our hope in other things and other projects, and in the end are surprised at our disappointment. Our actions center on fulfilling our desires and seldom center on preparing the way for Your coming. Please, forgive us Father. Renew our faith in Your Kingdom and restore our hope in Your coming. For it is in Christ Jesus that we live and move and have our being. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (John 3:16-17) Leader:

All:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have life everlasting. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Luke 1:26-38

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! ANTHEM

Mary’s Song Jeffrey Anthony

Do not be afraid, do not be afraid, for you have found favor with God! You have found favor with God! You will bear a child; you will birth a son. His name shall be called Jesus, and His name shall be called Jesus! He will be great and be called the Son of the Most High God! God will give Him David’s throne and His kingdom will never end! Do not be afraid, do not be afraid, for you have found favor with God!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

*HYMN #251, vs. 1,3,4

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

1. It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold; "Peace on the earth, good will to men, From heaven's all-gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing.

Edmund H. Sears

3. And ye, beneath life's crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing: O rest beside the weary road And hear the angels sing.

4. For lo! the days are hast'ning on, By prophets seen of old, When with the ever-circling years Shall come the time foretold, When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing. OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY

Adversity is a condition of suffering and hardship involving anguish, pressure, trials, heartaches, or disappointments. It may be physical or emotional in nature, and either long or short in duration, but it always causes pain. Although none of us want hurt or trouble, if it comes, we have two options. We can waste our sorrows or grow in our relationship with the Lord. Spiritual growth in adversity depends on several factors; one of which is to equip us to comfort others. That is where your Walking Beside ministers can make a difference -- meeting your need by providing care, compassion, community, and a listening ear. Give us a call.

Sharing Christmas with Our Community This holiday season is going to look a little different…that is an understatement for sure! This Christmas season the church will be hosting a Drive-Thru Nativity on Saturday, December 19 from 2:00-5:30pm. The Drive-Thru Nativity will feature scenes around the church parking lot that will tell the story of the birth of Jesus. In addition, we will have music in-between each scene and outreach opportunities to share information about DHPC. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to “set a scene” (costumes will be provided), help direct traffic and assist with outreach opportunities. This is a fun project for your family, Bible Study or covenant group.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Kathleen Harris at kharris@deserthills.org / (480) 741-3429 Let’s show our community the real reason for the season!

Advent - A Time of Prayer, Scripture and Song An Invitation to Be Still and Prepare Him Room Wednesdays, 6pm, Dec. 2, 9, 16, & 23 Live Streaming on the DHPC YouTube Channel O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is an ancient advent hymn that originated in part from the “Great ‘O’ Antiphons,” part of the medieval Advent liturgy. On each day of the week leading up to Christmas, one responsive verse would be chanted, each including a different Old Testament name for the coming Messiah. When we sing each verse of this hymn, we acknowledge Christ as the fulfillment of these Old Testament prophesies. We sing this hymn in an already-but not yet-kingdom of God. Christ's first coming gives us a reason to rejoice again and again, yet we know that all is not well with the world. So along with our rejoicing, we plead using the words of this hymn that Christ would come again to perfectly fulfill the promise that all darkness will be turned to light. We will sing one verse each week of Advent, along with the contemporary song Emmanuel.
