PRELUDE
* CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:
HYMN #90
O Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before God’s presence with thanksgiving in our hearts. Let us shout joyfully to God with songs of praise. Let us turn to the Lord in prayer.
Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee 1. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee, Op’ning to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!
text: van Dyke, Noble, Anthony
2. For our mothers we’re expressing Thanks and praise, O God, to Thee. Just as they have been a blessing, Bless them now where’er they be. Ever grateful for all they’ve given; Loving and encouraging, Mothers are a gift from heaven; So Your praises now we sing.
3. Mortals, join the mighty chorus Which the morning stars began; Love divine is reigning o’er us, Leading us with mercy’s hand. Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife. Joyful music leads us sunward In the triumph song of life! *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord, in Jesus Christ you have given us the Light of the world. Forgive us when we choose darkness and cling to sins that hide the brightness of your love. Renew our lives, and set us free to reflect your love to the entire world. All this we ask, so that we may be prepared for Christ’s coming. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
ASSURANCE Leader: All: ANTHEM
2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. Changed and Climbin’ Men’s Quartet Richard Cook, Jeffrey Anthony, John Thurston, and Eddie Smith

Once I traveled in the valley so low, so low, And lonely and weary was I Now I travel in the valley no more, no more, And I’ll reach the other side by and by, by and by. Well, well, I’m climbing up the mountain to the sky I’m going where I’ll never, never die, never die. I’m climbing up the mountain, climbing higher up the mountain, And I’ll reach the other side by and by, by and by. I’ve been to the river, I’ve been baptized, I’ve been washed in the blood of the Lamb. I’ve been changed from the creature that once I was And “redeemed” is now my name. I’ve been changed, I’m newborn now All my life has been rearranged. What a diff’rence it made when the Lord came and stayed In my heart, O yes, I’ve been changed. You know I’m climbing up the mountain, higher up the mountain to the sky I’m going, yes, I’m going where I’ll never, never die, never die. I’m climbing up the mountain, climbing higher up the mountain, And I’ll reach the other side by and by. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. page 3
SCRIPTURE
Matthew 5:1-16
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #87
Fairest Lord Jesus Remain seated during the handheld introduction. Please stand when the organ begins.
1. Fairest Lord Jesus; Ruler of all nature, O Thou of God and man the Son. Thee will I cherish; Thee will I honor, Thou my soul's glory, joy and crown.
3. Fair is the sunshine; Fairer still the moonlight And all the twinkling starry host. Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels heav'n can boast.
2. Fair are the meadows; Fairer still the woodlands, Robed in the blooming garb of spring. Jesus is fairer; Jesus is purer, Who makes the woeful heart to sing.
4. Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations! Son of God and Son of man! Glory and honor, Praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be Thine!

OLD HUNDREDTH
Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE
1 John 1:5-2:11
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. SERMON
