*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. People: Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." Leader: Speak to us Lord. As you promised through your prophets Isaiah and John the Baptist, come to us now. People: May all the barriers be removed so that we can receive your Word and worship you, in the name of Jesus Christ.
Ye Servants of God
1. Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, And publish abroad His wonderful name; The name, all-victorious, of Jesus extol: His kingdom is glorious, He rules over all.
3. “Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!” Let all cry aloud, and honor the Son; The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, Fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb.
2. God ruleth on high, almighty to save, And still He is nigh, His presence we have; The great congregation His triumph shall sing, Ascribing salvation to Jesus, our King.
4. Then let us adore, and give Him His right— All glory and pow’r, all wisdom and might, All honor and blessing, with angels above, And thanks never ceasing, and infinite love.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Forgive us our sins, O Lord. In Jesus Christ, your Light has been given to the world and your blessings poured out on us. Before anyone sought Him out, Jesus sought and entered the waters of baptism, in order to take on the sins of the world. In contrast, we often can only think about our own problems, our own needs, our own desires. Help us to desire you, Lord. Help us to yearn for your presence. Nourish and heal us so that we may joyfully serve you. Pour your baptismal waters over us again, cleansing us from our self-pity and arrogance. Wash away our jealousy, greed, and all negative thoughts and behaviors that stand in the way of our truly being the people you have called us to be. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (II Corinthians 5:17 ) Leader: If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature; the old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. ANTHEM
Comfort, Comfort Ye My People “Comfort, comfort ye my people; tell of peace!” Thus saith our God. “Comfort those who sit in darkness, mourning 'neath their sorrow's load. Speak ye to Jerusalem of the peace that waits for them; tell her that her sins I cover, and her warfare now is over.”
tr. Catherine Winkworth
For the herald's voice is crying in the desert far and near, calling us to true repentance, since the kingdom now is here. O that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way; let the valleys rise to meet him, and the hills bow down to greet him.
Make ye straight what long was crooked, make the rougher places plain; let your hearts be true and humble, as befits his holy reign. For the glory of the Lord now o'er earth is shed abroad; and all flesh shall see the token that his word is never broken.
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING Isaiah 40:1-11 1 2 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” 6 A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” 9 You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!” 10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.
Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! RESPONSE
Sanctuary (sing twice) Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true; With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living sanctuary for You.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE READING
Mark 1:1-13
1
The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”— 3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9
At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. SERMON *HYMN 1. Lord, dismiss us with Thy blessing; Fill our hearts with joy and peace. Let us each, Thy love possessing, Triumph in redeeming grace. O refresh us, O refresh us, Traveling through this wilderness.
“THE BEGINNING OF THE GOOD NEWS” Lord, Dismiss Us with Thy Blessing
Rev. Jim Noble #237
2. Thanks we give and adoration For Thy gospel’s joyful sound; May the fruits of Thy salvation In our hearts and lives abound. Ever faithful, ever faithful To Thy truth may we be found.

MESSAGE FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE... As you may have expected, the church continues to need your financial support in these trying times. Presently we are not holding services on campus and we anticipate a deficit in much needed and projected non-pledge offering in April and maybe beyond. If possible, please consider continuing your financial support on a regular basis. - Thank you from Your Finance Committee
MESSAGE FROM DHPC ACCOUNTANT... Thank you for your financial support during these difficult times. DHPC members are encouraged to mail their pledges. The Finance team will be checking the post office box and the physical mailbox while the church office is closed. DHPC does not offer an electronic offering option. This decision was made for two reasons. First, the monthly and per transaction fee to the church would reduce the offering amount. Second, parishioners can elect on-line bill pay through their banking institution at no fee to them or the church. If you would like to set up automatic donations contact your bank. You will need to provide them DHPC's address (P.O. Box 874 Carefree, AZ 85377) your account number and your first and last name. Bobi Tomlon, Controller Desert Hills Presbyterian Church 480-488-3384

MESSAGE FROM THE SESSION The session of DHCP is pleased to announce that Chris Haidet will be joining the staff team as Director of Family and Student Ministries on May 1, 2020. Originally from Southern California, Chris lived in Arizona from 2005-2015 working as Youth Pastor, Church Planter/Lead Pastor and Pastor of Missions and Outreach for churches in the Chandler and San Tan Valley area. Most recently he was the Student Ministries Pastor at Heritage Church in Texarkana, TX. Chris has been in ministry for over 20 years and is a natural evangelist and teacher. His strong resume makes him an excellent fit for our church.
Chris Haidet
Moving our Vision Along • Children and Youth were identified as a priority in the Mission Study that was conducted several years ago. Staffing children and youth is our one gap. • The session has been working on filling the staffing gap since the beginning of the year when the virus hit and put a pause to things. • Rae Moomey is a blessing and will be focusing on homeschooling her daughter, Arrow, in the fall and therefore did not apply for the position. • Chris was brought to the attention of the church and we knew that his experience and credentials made him an excellent candidate. • Session gave its blessing to proceeding with Chris. • The search committee composed of Ed Nichols, Vicki Parker, and Nathaniel Everett had multiple interviews, and arrangements were made for youth, families, and teachers to meet and interact with Chris. What Chris brings to DHPC • Love for Jesus Christ and for students and families • Experience and a proven track record in developing, redeveloping and expanding family and student ministries. • Heart for and experience in evangelism and outreach. • Served as mission director arranging and coordinating various mission trips and experience including, Navajo, Jamaica, and Scotland. • Performing arts where he served as production manager for large and small events What will Chris be doing at DHPC? • 75 percent of Chris’ time will be spent serving as director for Family and Student Ministries, that is infants through college age. • Within that he will devote significant time to reach grades 4-12 in our community and their families. • 25 percent of Chris’ time will be spent assisting the church in mission. • Clearly Chris’ skills and expertise production and event coordination will be available to other areas of the church. God has blessed us with a wonderful addition to our team at DHPC and we are excited to see the ways God continues to use DHCP in the community. Sincerely, The DHPC Session page 9
