SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY May 31, 2020, 8:30am and 11:00am

Organ Sonata No. 1: Sehr langsam

P. Hindemith

* CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. People: Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. Leader: They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. People: All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Breathe on Me, Breath of God 1. Breathe on me, Breath of God, Fill me with life anew, That I may love what Thou dost love, And do what Thou wouldst do.

3. Breathe on me, Breath of God, Till I am wholly Thine, Until this earthly part of me Glows with Thy fire divine.

2. Breathe on me, Breath of God, Until my heart is pure, Until with Thee I will Thy will, To do and to endure.

4. Breathe on me, Breath of God, So shall I never die, But live with Thee the perfect life Of Thine eternity.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Leader:

All:

On the day of Pentecost, the people asked, “What must we do to be saved?” And Peter answered them, “Repent and be baptized, each and every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off— for all whom the Lord our God will call.” Lord, we have not repented, but continued in our own paths and trusting in our own wisdom. We take pride in determining for ourselves how we will live. We believe we can do whatever we want as long as we ask you to forgive our ongoing sins. But today we join with the Lamenters in history and cry out, “Turn us, O Lord, unto you, and we shall be turned indeed.” Help us not only to ask for forgiveness, but to truly repent of our sins. And here Lord, we also confess that we have not claimed your promise for our children, and for all who are far away. This day may they hear you say, “I have called you by name, you are mine.” Help us to be witnesses to Jesus Christ and ambassadors of your reconciliation. We pray all this in Jesus name, Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader:

All: ANTHEM

It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. When You Pass Through the Waters

Paul Weber

Fear not, fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned; and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God. I am the Lord your God, the Holy One, your Savior. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 43:1-21

1

But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. 4 Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. 5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. 6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth—7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” 8 Lead out those who have eyes but are blind, who have ears but are deaf. 9 All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble. Which of their gods foretold this and proclaimed to us the former things? Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right, so that others may hear and say, “It is true.” 10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. 11 I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior. 12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God. 13 Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?” 14 This is what the Lord says—your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “For your sake I will send to Babylon and bring down as fugitives all the Babylonians, in the ships in which they took pride. 15 I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator, your King.” 16 This is what the Lord says—he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, 17 who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: 18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. 20 The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, 21 the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! RESPONSE (sung) Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

How Firm a Foundation

#408

1. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in God's excellent Word! What more can be said than to you God hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

4. "When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

2. "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

5. "The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake."

3. "When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

Mark 2:12-22

12

He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” 13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. 15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” 18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?” 19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast. 21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.” SERMON

The spread of the coronavirus across the world and our country has created an incredibly stressful environment for all of us, especially those with underlying health conditions. Because we are socially isolated and the media bombards us with the latest numbers on COVID-19 cases and deaths, we experience a roller coaster of emotions. Our reactions can fluctuate from disbelief, denial, anxiety, fear, anger, and even depression. If you’d like someone to talk with, our team members would be glad to visit with you by phone or in person.

Do you ever feel weighed down with worry?

Does the uncertainty and chaos of life keep you up at night? Does all that you and others have endured as a result of COVID-19, or thoughts relating to leaving your home, or what our new “norm” might be have a hold on you? Are you in need of some calm?

Join Pastor Brett for a 5-Week Online Zoom Study Wednesdays from 10-11am, starting May 27th Pastor Brett will be leading an online study that centers around Max Lucado’s series Anxious for Nothing and dealing with Philippians 4:4-8. Through it, participants will be encouraged to overcome anxiety in these troubling days by viewing bad news through the lens of God’s sovereignty.

Participants will be encouraged to watch a 20 minute video using RightNow Media prior to each lesson that will help to flesh out our Philippians text under study. There is no book to be purchased. Those who wish to participate, please contact Pastor Brett at beverett@deserthills.org or 480-488-3384. MESSAGE FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE... A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has continued to support the church financially. We are blessed to have such a generous church family. At this time our receipts and expenses are within the normal range for this time of year. In addition, the church has applied for and received money on May 1st from the CARES Act Payroll Protection Plan. This money ($112,000) will be used to assist with salaries. It is classified as a loan and all or part may be forgiven. The $112,000 number was based on a calculation of the average adjusted monthly 2019 personnel expenses times a 2 ½ month period. Yes we are truly blessed.

- Thank you from Your Finance Committee

MESSAGE FROM DHPC ACCOUNTANT... Thank you for your financial support during these difficult times. DHPC members are encouraged to mail their pledges. The Finance team will be checking the post office box and the physical mailbox while the church office is closed. DHPC does not offer an electronic offering option. This decision was made for two reasons. First, the monthly and per transaction fee to the church would reduce the offering amount. Second, parishioners can elect on-line bill pay through their banking institution at no fee to them or the church. If you would like to set up automatic donations contact your bank. You will need to provide them DHPC's address (P.O. Box 874 Carefree, AZ 85377) your account number and your first and last name. - Bobi Tomlon, Controller, Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, 480-488-3384
