SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday, May 16, 2021, 8:00/9:30/11:00AM
PRELUDE
* CALL TO WORSHIP (Isaiah 40: 28-31)
Leader:
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even the young grow tired and weary, even the young stumble and fall; but those who wait in hope upon the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Let us wait together upon the Lord, Let us turn to him in prayer.
HYMN #8, vs. 1-3
Come, Thou Almighty King
1. Come, Thou Almighty King, Help us Thy Name to sing; Help us to praise. Father all-glorious, O'er all victorious, Come, and reign over us, Ancient of Days.
2. Come, Thou Incarnate Word, Gird on Thy mighty sword; Our prayer attend. Come, and Thy people bless, And give Thy Word success, Spirit of holiness, On us descend.
3. Come, Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour. Thou, Who almighty art, Now rule in every heart And ne'er from us depart, Spirit of pow'r. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 3
*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord, our sins have made us impatient. We celebrate and praise those who can force the agenda, manipulate the crowd, and provide us with the quick fix to our problems. In such an environment, the call to wait upon the Lord seems laughable and intolerable. And yet deep inside we hunger to slow down, to find a moment of rest, the quiet spot with you, our God. Help us to be able to wait in hope for you, so that our strength is renewed in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE Leader: All:
2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.
ANTHEM
Sing a New Song Chancel Choir
Joseph Martin
Sing to the Lord; sing a new song. Sing to the Lord; sing a new song for God has filled the world with wonderful things. Shout with joy to the Lord! Let the earth break forth in song. Let the hills their voices raise, And the valleys echo praise; Shout with joy, shout with joy to the Lord! O Sing to the Lord; sing a new song... PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE
John 14:16-27
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” Then Judas (not Judas Iscaripage 4
ot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #572
Blessed Assurance
1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
2. Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain
Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long; This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long.
3. Perfect submission — all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest; Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. Refrain

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE
Acts 1:1-11
In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” SERMON *HYMN #9, v. 2

A Thank You Message from Troop Care Ministry We are pleased to announce that, through your generous donations, we were able to donate $4,030 worth of grocery gift cards to the Luke AFB Airman and Family Readiness Center this year. Our annual gift card drive ended in February and, while Covid-19 did bring the cards donated at church down about 15% this year, thanks to the generous cash donations we’ve received we were able to increase the donation of cards by 5%. These things are especially important during the pandemic, and DHPC has come through again for the troops in need in the local community. The Chief of the Readiness Center, Mr. McCarty, couldn’t emphasize enough the difference it makes, especially after Christmas and before Easter. The Troop Care Ministry is exceedingly grateful for the support of the congregation in their donations; we also ask that you say a prayer for those serving our country and thank you for making some of their lives a little better.
THANK YOU DHPC WOMEN! The Chaplaincy for the Homeless collected over 250 purses for homeless women, many of which were distributed on Mother's Day on the Human Services Campus. The purses were donated by several churches in the area with DHPC contributing 75 purses, many filled with surprise gifts in the purse. Your contributions to The Chaplaincy continue to help us reach the lost each week. Thank you, John Thurston, Mission Committee page 9
