SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY 9:45am, May 10, 2020

Open the Eyes of My Heart

Baloche

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Come, with undivided attention, to meet God, who calls you away from old routines. People: Our souls wait for God in silence. Our hope is in God, our rock and our salvation. Leader: Come without anxiety or fear, for God cares for you. People: We come with devotion to our Lord, in whom time is fulfilled and life has meaning. Leader: Let us seek the Lord in prayer.

Here I Am Lord 1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in darkness now My hand will save. I who make the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. It is I Lord. I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, where you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

#589 2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my words to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. It is I Lord. I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, where you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide, Till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. It is I Lord. I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, where you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, there are many voices calling out asking us to follow. Looking back on things, we realize that at times we’ve followed the wrong way, at other times we’ve been so overwhelmed that we’ve done nothing. Help us to hear Your call when it comes to us. Give us the wisdom to know the Truth, the will to choose it, and the courage to follow it. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (II Corinthians 5:17) Leader: If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature; the old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. ANTHEM

Joyful, Joyful Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee, Op’ning to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!

van Dyke, Noble, Anthony

For our mothers we’re expressing Thanks and praise, O God, to Thee. Just as they have been a blessing, Bless them now where’er they be. Ever grateful for all they’ve given; Loving and encouraging, Mothers are a gift from heaven; So Your praises now we sing.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus Which the morning stars began; Love divine is reigning o’er us, Leading us with mercy’s hand. Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife. Joyful music leads us sunward In the triumph song of life!

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE READING

Mark 1:1-13

1

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”— 3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! RESPONSE

I Have Decided to Follow Jesus

#602, vs. 1 & 4

I have decided to follow Jesus, I have decided to follow Jesus, I have decided to follow Jesus, No turning back, no turning back. Will you decide now to follow Jesus? Will you decide now to follow Jesus? Will you decide now to follow Jesus? No turning back, no turning back. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Mark 1:14-31

14

After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. SERMON *HYMN

THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES! THE CLAN of CHRIST 38 Years & still counting Previous gathering with our Leupp sister church.

Pray for our Leupp friends. There are still no reported COVID-19 cases among our Leupp sister church families as the Navajo Nation extends its lockdown and curfew. As of April 29th, there were 62 deaths and 1977 confirmed cases. A strict curfew is being enforced on the Navajo Nation from 8:00pm to 5:00am subject to $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail. The curfew and lockdown are extended to all day Saturdays and Sundays, therefore Pastor Calvin has not been able to conduct virtual services since April 5th. Any decisions on a possible joint virtual service are on hold until the curfew is lifted. An invitation has been posted

on the Hope Resurrected Facebook page for Leupp to join us in worship and study using our subscription to RightNow Media. In these stressful times of fighting a pandemic with social distancing, it is important more than ever to stay connected with each other. With the support of the DHPC staff and Missions Committee, a “Clan of Christ” Zoom gathering will be recorded and posted to the Hope Resurrected Facebook page. Please contact Chuck Starnes at cstarnes@gmail.com if you want to participate in creating a personal message of encouragement and love for our Leupp friends.

Navajo Nation imposes another weekend curfew, confirms 104 new cases of COVID-19. The total number of positive COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation has reached 1,873.

Message from the Purnells… Tom and Barbara Purnell wish to thank all of the DHPC folks who have assisted them since Barbara’s recent neck surgery. They said that DHPC has the best cooks in the country and God Bless them all!

ZOOM MEETINGS A Zoom Meeting account has been created for any group to access should they desire to meet online. Please contact our Office Manager (admin@deserthills.org), Kathleen Harris (kharris@deserthills.org), or Brett Everett (beverett@deserthills.org) to schedule a meeting for your group. *DISCLAIMER: Any online meeting platform has its risks. Zoom is no exception. However, the company has been responsive to privacy and security concerns and has corrected some of the known issues. Please do not join a meeting however, if you do not feel comfortable with this platform.*

All Bible Studies, book studies and home groups are encouraged to meet via Facetime, Skype or other electronic means. Leaders may still, for example, provide lessons, questions, devotionals, etc. to keep their groups engaged. Please contact Pastor Brett at beverett@deserthills.org if you have questions as to how to set these up.

MESSAGE FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE... As you may have expected, the church continues to need your financial support in these trying times. Presently we are not holding services on campus and we anticipate a deficit in much needed and projected non-pledge offering in May and maybe beyond. If possible, please consider continuing your financial support on a regular basis. - Thank you from Your Finance Committee

MESSAGE FROM DHPC ACCOUNTANT... Thank you for your financial support during these difficult times. DHPC members are encouraged to mail their pledges. The Finance team will be checking the post office box and the physical mailbox while the church office is closed. DHPC does not offer an electronic offering option. This decision was made for two reasons. First, the monthly and per transaction fee to the church would reduce the offering amount. Second, parishioners can elect on-line bill pay through their banking institution at no fee to them or the church. If you would like to set up automatic donations contact your bank. You will need to provide them DHPC's address (P.O. Box 874 Carefree, AZ 85377) your account number and your first and last name. Bobi Tomlon, Controller Desert Hills Presbyterian Church 480-488-3384
