Leader: May we listen for God’s invitations to personal discipleship and service; People: To communion with one another and with the Holy One. All: Let us draw near to each other through the Spirit and prepare our hearts and minds to worship God. INVOCATION ON THE NIGHT JESUS WAS BETRAYED: HUMILITY Scripture and Reflection: John 13:1-11 1
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

ON THE NIGHT JESUS WAS BETRAYED: SERVING Scripture and Reflection: John 13: 12-17 12
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. ON THE NIGHT JESUS WAS BETRAYED: DENIAL Scripture and Reflection: John 13:36-38 36
Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” 37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! PRAYER OF CONFESSION Loving Christ, on that night long ago, you knew your hour had come and what lay ahead of you. Your disciples loved you and followed you, but they had also failed you and would fail you yet again that night. You knew of the denial and betrayal. Yet you washed their feet, as a servant would – even the feet of your betrayer. We as your disciples have also loved and followed you. Yet we fail you too and struggle sometimes to fully comprehend the love you show us, the love that is our example, the love that tells us to do as you have done for us. Forgive us our shortcomings and make us more like you – that all may see us as your faithful disciples by the way we love each other as you first loved us. Hear now our silent prayers of personal confession… ON THE NIGHT JESUS WAS BETRAYED: LOVE Scripture and Reflection: John 13:31-35 31
When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” A Directed Prayer For Those We Have Been Called to Love ON THE NIGHT JESUS WAS BETRAYED: PROVISION Scripture and Reflection: John 14:15-21, 25-27 15
“If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

ON THE NIGHT JESUS WAS BETRAYED: COMMUNION Scripture and Reflection: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 23
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 24

Carried to The Table
Mooring, Byrd, Hindalong
Wounded and forsaken I was shattered by the fall Broken and forgotten Feeling lost and all alone Summoned by the King Into the Master's courts Lifted by the Savior And cradled in His arms
Fighting thoughts of fear Wond'ring why He called my name Am I good enough to share this cup This world has left me lame Even in my weakness The Savior called my name In His holy presence I'm healed and unashamed
I was carried to the table Seated where I don't belong Carried to the table Swept away by His love And I don't see my brokenness anymore When I'm seated at the table of the Lord I'm carried to the table The table of the Lord
(As) I'm carried to the table Seated where I don't belong Carried to the table Swept away by His love And I don't see my brokenness anymore When I'm seated at the table of the Lord I'm carried to the table The table of the Lord

CLOSING PRAYER THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. SCRIPTURE
Luke 22:47-54a
47
While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.” 54 Then seizing him, they led him away. A MOMENT OF SILENT REFLECTION Please observe a moment of silence as the Christ Candle is taken from the sanctuary.
