Some of you have been asking how the and why the church has come to some of the recent staff decisions.

The easy answer is GOD who has been at work in a powerful way. It is true that with changes in staff last year and the limited resources (our commitment to a balanced budget) the session faced some difficult decisions.

When Donna retired as the Office Manager, Bobi offered to come on full-time as she and Kathleen were willing to cover the front office. This freed up funds and the session initially approved a search for a full-time Youth Director and a part-time Children’s Ministry positions. However, Bobi found that her family still needed her to work only part-time and the demands of both Controller and covering the front office were growing too large as the year ended. In December of 2018 the session was informed that Bobi would be returning to her hourly Controller position. As a result the session needed to re-examine its staffing plan.

First, the session adopted a team approach to student and family ministry rather than have that be the responsibility of a youth person. What does that mean? It means that all staff are to work with all ages and not be limited to just adults or just youth. In fact, we have been functioning this way since July of last year with myself, Jeffrey, Kathleen, and then Mike all working on Student and Family Ministry. Like all systems this approach has strengths and weakness, but allows the church to cover all of its ministry needs.

During the search for the office manager the church came across Lyndsi Bigbee whose educational background is in Organizational Communication and who had served as an Assistant Children’s Ministry Director for a large church in Tennessee. Her heart for outreach, prayer and reaching out to families immediately caught our attention. In keeping with its team approach that all staff work with all ages and seeing Lyndsi’s passion for outreach, the session decided to have her fill the position of Outreach Director, working with all ages. In addition, this is a joint position created in partnership with Neighbors In Need AZ who was looking for a part-time Administrative Assistant. Lyndsi joins the church team as ¾ time Director of Outreach and ¼ time Administrative Assistant to Neighbors In Need AZ. God is at work in a powerful way at DHPC, bringing new people to serve on our team. Once again the Lord’s blessings are manifested among us. Please welcome our new staff members and I ask your continued prayer for all of our staff as they work tirelessly to further God’s kingdom.

Second, the session agreed and eliminated the full-time Youth Director position in order to use the funds to hire a full-time Office Manager. The church used Brenda Fent, a staffing specialist who helped us find Donna and Bobi, to find the new office manager. We were all surprised when Brenda reported back in 24 hours that she had strong candidates that the church should move on quickly as “they will be snatched up quickly.” We are pleased to announce that on February 19th Beth Biebrich started as our full-time Office Manager. Beth brings years of experience in church office management, publication design, and even accounting experience.

Hello!

My name is Lyndsi Bigbee and I am so excited to be the new Outreach Director here at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church!

One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is Luke 10:2 where Jesus says “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.

Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” The harvest IS plentiful. People do need to hear Scripture, they do need a personal touch from God, from us, the Body of Christ. They just may not know it yet… or want it. But I go back to those four words: “the harvest is plentiful.” Put simply, the harvest needs Jesus.

When I reflect over my life and think of outreach, I start asking myself a few questions: Who have I reached out to? Who do I reach out to consistently? Who do I care about in the community? Who do I try to impact on a day-to-day basis?

Immediately an image comes to my mind, not first of me reaching out to others, but of Jesus reaching out to me. I think of the times in my life when I saw Jesus walking beside me, leading me, comforting me, my Father holding me. I think of hard times I’ve been though, and good times, where I so clearly felt Jesus’ presence with me.

It’s challenging to reach out to people. Sometimes it gets us out of our comfort zones.

Five days after I graduated college I went on a mission trip to a poor country in Eastern Europe. It was my first time leaving the country and I was excited about all the people I would meet, and telling them about what Christ had done in my life.

Telling. What a word. I could not tell many people much about anything because many people in the country I was visiting did not speak English, and I certainly didn’t speak Albanian! I was learning, but process was slow, and I had a few months to learn the language. A second roadblock was being female. I had much less freedom as a female in that country than I did in the United States. I couldn’t go out alone, wasn’t allowed to talk to men one-on-one, and I had to be super cautious about my safety. I am obviously American, and most natives were more interested in my American status than any other. I even got several marriage proposals by strangers looking for green cards to America. However, there was one surprisingly simple thing that became a bridge between me and the native people.

My missionary friends and I laughed a lot together. And we smiled. At first, you might not think a smile is much, or laughter, or joy, but it is, it really is. I found many people in that country to be depressed, especially the young women, and a smile to them was… surprising. Intriguing. Inviting.

One day we had a friend of ours ask us, “Why do you smile all the time?” A smile became the best way to share my faith because it was a bridge to friendship. I could easily answer “I smile so much because I know God loves me. Let me tell you about how awesome He is.”

Sometimes the simplicity of the Gospel can surprise me.

I can complicate outreach just as much as anyone. But I suspect ultimately reaching out to others means the simple things: listening, kindness, joy. Love. Those acts are simple, but they are exactly what people take notice of.

My prayer is that as we go about reaching our community, the joy of the Lord would be our strength. I’m looking forward to partnering with you in all that God is doing and sharing our faith with those around us.

DISCIPLING OTHERS The Walking Beside Ministry Team A disciple is one who follows Christ, imitating his life, and obeying his teachings.* The Gospel of John shows us three complementary perspectives on what it means to follow Jesus: to be a worshiper, a servant, and a witness.** We tend to think of a disciple as someone who proclaims the gospel to the world, and while that is true, discipleship is about the transformation and growth journey of the believer. The other side of that coin is how a disciple cares for others. Consider the following examples of discipling others offered by Mark Carver: Serving sacrificially within the local body of believers, which is ministry. Disciples come to know God’s call on their life and that He has equipped them for service; they live it out continually.

Sharing God’s love, forgiveness, and hope with people who do not know Christ and those who do but are in crisis.*** Carver’s points describe the work of the Desert Hills Presbyterian Church’s (DHPC) Walking Beside Ministry team.

The purpose of this ministry is to come alongside people and walk with them through difficult times, such as major health issues, death, divorce, or job loss.

This team of dedicated Christians disciple in non-traditional ways. For example, they call and visit people, send emails, greeting cards, and more importantly, they sit and actively listen when folks need to talk. They are living examples of Christ’s love and peace sharing with others how

God has worked in their life and the lives of others.

One team member has developed and grown a ministry by going daily to a restaurant early in the morning to read his Bible. It was never planned; it just happened as a result of sharing the gospel and the happiness he felt when he read his Bible. He has met and talked with all the regulars there and has invited them to his church Bible study. Several have accepted his invitation.

What one team member categorizes, as their "walking beside" response to God's call, the face-to-face meetings with anyone who is walking through a "deep valley," and is perhaps overwhelmed, confused, or afraid. They might be somewhat comforted by having someone at their side to listen or just be there in silence to help lighten the load or lift the cloud. For example, a few years ago when a good friend of this team member was diagnosed with cancer and went through many months of chemo and radiation at Houston’s M.D. Anderson Hospital, this member communicated daily by email. It was not planned or initiated for any purpose other than "walking" with a friend. This is a way of life for dedicated Christian team members.

Another team member once knew a person who was badly deceived by others, which greatly affected the victim financially. The victim was left angry and bitter towards those involved. This team member reminded the person how Jesus had suffered and died for our sins. She continued to stress how important it was to forgive those who wronged them. Over time, the victim forgave their perpetrators and was set free from all the anger and bitterness he once carried.

One team member has a “grocery store ministry.” No matter where she is, she talks with others, be it a grocery store or a gym. She is friendly, a very good listener, and perhaps because she is a stranger, people will sometimes open up and share the difficult times they’re experiencing. Often, she will follow up and/or suggest helpful resources; other times it’s just a one-time encounter.

A more traditional approach is illustrated by the way a member ministers to a middle-aged man with the mind of a

ten-year old. This man lost his only advocate and supporter, who was his mother, in a tragic set of circumstances and is now on his own. This team member supports and encourages him; she makes herself available when he struggles with bouts of depression because his family has ostracized him. She prays for him, takes him to lunch once a week, and helps him see the positive side of his situation.

She brings hope when she talks to him about God with a focus on eventually being reunited with his mother.

The work of the DHPC Walking Beside Ministry team involves other subtle, non-traditional ways of discipling.

Typical examples include praying for and with others, sending scripture and devotions through emails, and sharing how we’ve experienced God at work in our lives. We’re not perfect, Jesus doesn’t expect us to be, but we work at righting our wrongs and apologizing when needed. More importantly, we work at living a life that reflects Christ’s love and peace.

THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES – LEUPP 2019 Mark your calendar from April 27 &28 when we will join with our Navajo sister church in Leupp to celebrate 37 years of ministry together.

In the past, we have been from the bottom of Diablo Canyon, where the John Willie told of herding sheep, to the top of the mesas where Hermon Curley showed us where he came to faith.

We have been taught about Navajo tradition and learned how to make fry bread - oops! They made it look so easy!

We have seen a Navajo style calf branding and played with abused and abandoned Navajo children living at Naomi House.

We have celebrated George Willie as one of our few remaining World War II code talkers, and we mourned his passing with his family and community.

We have seen the seeds of faith planted and nurtured in the navajo youth and watched as these sometimes troubled youths grew to become spiritual leaders know on the reservation. As hope resurrected.

We have been with Abel Talayumptewa on the Hopi mesas allowed only with a native guide. Then, we visited the Hopi Cultural Center, ate traditional Hopi food and saw the famous Prophesy Rock.

On Sunday we are called to worship as the Clan of Christ for a culturally rich and spiritually uplifting time together followed by fellowship over a meal and maybe some jewelry and craft sales.

So, what is in store for us this year? As you have just read, it is always an adventure.

Our busy season is here!

Our 9:45 a.m. worship service is feeling full, and we have heard that some people are driving in circles in our limited church parking lot, looking for a place to park! If you are a regular attender who is able to park and walk from El Pedregal, it would be very helpful to leave more open parking places closer to the church for visitors and those with mobility issues. You may also wish to consider attending the 8:15 a.m. or 11:10 a.m. worship services to help alleviate crowding at the 9:45 a.m. worship. Until Easter comes and goes, we have the wonderful opportunity to make space for visitors and seasonal worshippers!

With our new organ and strong traditional music program plus the fresh experience at The Gathering, we offer our friends and neighbors a choice in worship styles. We encourage our members to help us publicize our three worship services—personal invitation is always the best approach.

If you haven’t experienced worship in Fellowship Center recently, come and hear! For those who love the traditional style, we encourage you to attend the traditional worship service and walk across the patio to hear the Sunday morning rehearsal or the first 10 minutes of the worship service at 11:10 a.m. We want to reach our community with strong Biblical teaching, variety of musical styles, and programs for families and folks of all ages. We have LOTS going on at DHPC and we need your help to SPREAD THE WORD!

Trip to Poland God has given us an amazing opportunity to make a difference this spring – and have an impact in Poland, a country that is thirsty to learn more about Jesus through music, ministry and cross-cultural fellowship. God is calling us to testify about the Lord’s Grace, witness to His loving goodness, and to spread the gospel. To help support this short-term mission, we humbly ask you to prayerfully consider making a financial contribution.

In May, we will visit four cities in Poland as part of the Von Promnitz Royal Tour, which is welcomed by the Polish government, and organized by Next Generation Mission founded by our own Richard Dietrich (NextGenMission.org).

Fourteen members from Desert Hills Presbyterian Church will be joined by five members of our Navajo sister church, First Presbyterian Church of Leupp, and six members of our Jamaican sister church, Ebenezer United Church. We will be testifying how we know Jesus Christ personally, sharing our cultural traditions in Polish schools and with the community, witnessing how we and our sister churches find friendship and common ground in our faith, and encouraging those of Catholic and Protestant faiths to come together in a shared love for our Lord.

In order to make this mission a reality, we need your help.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 to offset travel costs for our Navajo and Jamaican brothers and sisters and help pay for other expenses such as baggage fees for musical instruments, supplies when our work takes us to schools and festivals and gifts for the Polish people, including church and government officials.

Poland Mission Dinner

We invite you to attend our Poland Mission Dinner in the Fellowship Center of DHPC on Saturday, April 13th from 4-6pm. We will share our music, have presentations about Poland and the Von Promnitz family and enjoy a dinner of hearty Polish foods. A freewill offering will be collected to help support our mission trip.

What is the Opioid Epidemic?

The term opioid epidemic or crisis has made headlines in the news almost daily in the last few years. This specifically refers to the growing number of deaths and hospitalizations from opioids, including prescriptions, illicit drugs, and analogues. In recent years, death rates from these drugs have increased to over 40,000 a year or about 115 a day in the US. Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, largely due to the opioid epidemic.

What are Opioids?

Through worship, reflection, and art we will journey together, seeking to deepen our relationship with God. THE SEASONS OF LENT AND EASTER Ash Wednesday Worship Service March 6 • 7:00 pm

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6.

Desert Hills Presbyterian Church will be holding our traditional Ash Wednesday worship service at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Please add this date to your calendar as we begin our walk toward Jerusalem, following Christ to the cross, and then to the empty tomb.

This service will include hymns, prayers, and the placement of ashes as a sign of our sinful condition and repentance. Communion by intinction will also be served.

Palm Sunday – April 14

On Palm Sunday Christians celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. It is the week before his death and resurrection and also marks the beginning of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday worship services on April 14 will be at the regularly scheduled times of 8:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. in the Sanctuary, and 11:10 a.m. in the Fellowship Center.

Maundy Thursday April 18 • 7:00 pm

Maundy Thursday is the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples, sharing a meal with them, which is known as the Last Supper.

We will be observing this day with a special worship service on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m., and Communion will be served.

Good Friday April 19 • 7:00 pm

Our Holy Week special services continue with a Good Friday worship service which will be held on Friday, April 19, at 7 p.m.

Good Friday services reflect and remember the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary. He died for our sins, and it is only through Him that we have been saved.

Easter Services – April 21

On April 21, we will commemorate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We will be holding FOUR Easter worship services this year to worship our risen Lord.

• Sunrise Worship Service will begin at 6:30 a.m. outside on the Church Patio.

• Traditional Worship Services will be held at 8:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

• The Gathering Worship Service will be held at 11:10 a.m. in the Fellowship Center.

Most people don’t know, but the season of Easter last 50 days! It goes from Easter Sunday until Pentecost, which this year is June 9.

With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all. – Acts 4:33

MUSIC AND ARTS ACTIVITIES Mostly Wednesday Workshops: On January 23rd folks attended two workshops. Binka Schwan demonstrated various methods for blocking knitting projects and taught the “mattress stitch”. One of her students commented that, “Binka is a wealth of information” in the knitting world!! All the ladies agreed this was a valuable knitting experience!

In the afternoon there was a field trip to the MIM for a tour led by our own Eric Steinberg. Those who attended were amazed at the wealth of information and exhibits on the history of musical instruments. They especially liked the personal touch in having Eric as the tour guide! One comment I heard involved “the cool bell display”. Some of the bells being really huge in size made the group wonder how difficult it would be to actually lift one and ring it!! Another comment addressed the in-depth stories about the instruments the group viewed. “Some of the very old instruments led to the development of modern instruments. Every country had music, and the instruments were developed from local products – sometimes from junk”!! The MIM does a marvelous job of displaying the instruments, plus the personal headset picks up the sound as you approach the display! It is a place which can be visited over and over, there is so much to see. It is truly a “treasure” right in our backyard!!!

Coming Soon from Music and Arts: Sign Up Today In March, Ron Carson will teach students to make Stoneware Bowls and Plates. This class will be offered off campus and will require three separate dates to finish project – March 13th (Create) March 20 (Glaze) and March 27 (Pickup).

Class limit is 10 participants. Cost is $12 due at time of sign up. On March 27th Sue Palmer will teach a class entitled, “Journaling as a Spiritual Practice”. The class from 10:00 until noon requires no payment, and there is no participation limit.

On April 27 Deb McDermott will lead a class in preparation of Healthy Appetizers with samples to taste. Recipes will be provided. The class will run from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. There is no cost, but participation is limited to 20 people.

Arts at the Rocks Arts at the Rocks presents gospel singers, The Allen Family on February 24 at 4:00 P.M., followed by a catered meal and a chance to meet and greet the Allen Family members. They have thrilled audiences worldwide with their unique blend of family harmony and energizing creativity for more than two decades!!

On February 27 we offered two fun opportunities. “Free for all Drawathon” featuring our own DHPC aritists Joe Gilliland and Ron Carson and “Make your Own Beaded Bracelet taught by Suzie Randolph and Janice Pendelton.

On Sunday, March 10 at 4:00pm, Don Shire, internationally known gifted Christian trumpeter, will share his music and testimony. His arrangements vary in style from classical to jazz to gospel, and appeals to all ages.

Please join us for Christian comedy as “Peppi”, a stand-up comedian, radio personality, story teller and writer regales us with a “side-aching funny” evening. Be sure to purchase your tickets in advance for this show, which happens on March 24th at 7:00 P.M. Tickets are now being sold on the patio each Sunday. They are also available in the church office.

FUN + FELLOWSHIP Wow!! Our first activities started with 11 people attending the Mahjong class. They continue on Tuesdays, 12:30-3:30 weekly through February then on the first and third Tuesdays there after.

They meet in Narthex 1. Beginners are welcome.

The first Lunch and Museum Tour (L&M) was February 21 with over 20 people attending. Gail and Hans Thiele will host the first Book Group, Saturday, March 2, at 6:00 p.m. The book is “The Point of it All” by Charles Krauthammer. BYOB with appetizers provided by the host. The group will meet monthly in group members’ homes.
