*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Acts 8:26-40 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is wa-

ter. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY In Galatians 6, Paul tells us to “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” At Desert Hills our Walking Beside team members have been trained and organized to do just that. They provide one-to-one care, prayer, and support to those who are going through a difficult time. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
If you are dealing with the loss of a friend or a loved one, finding it difficult to find peace or move forward or you are missing them more than anyone can know, we encourage you to attend our grief support group. You will find others like you who are struggling with loss and whose hearts are aching. You will find help, comfort and compassion. The group is open to members or the community. The faith based support group is open, co-ed, non-denominational and free of charge. The prayer of Illumination is another “standard” part of our services, where we use the same spoken prayer each week. There are great benefits to repetition in worship. For one thing, it is likely that we will memorize something (even if we’re not trying to) that we say or sing on a regular basis. This gives us a chance to really internalize the meaning as we experience it over time. It is beneficial to have the words in our memory so we can use them outside of worship anytime they would be helpful. It also makes possible shared experiences when written materials aren’t available. For example, the Prayer of Illumination could be prayed together before reading scripture at a group Bible study, or the Doxology could be sung as a blessing before a communal meal. On the down side, it is also possible for familiarity to lead to perfunctoriness, or at worst, mindless repetition. So a little variety is a way for the Holy Spirit to work in us in a new way. We will be singing “Come, Holy Spirit” as the Prayer of Illumination each Sunday in June (and then returning to “normal” in July). As the sermon series focusses on the different ways the Holy Spirit works in us, it seems appropriate to ask for the Spirit’s illumination in a different way. It is a catchy tune and will hopefully stay with you throughout the week as a reminder for each of us to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. And—even if you don’t like to sing (is that possible???)—the song works just as well as a spoken prayer: Come, Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me. Fill me with your power; that is what I need. Only you can make me whole; give me strength to make me grow. Come, Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me. Amen. —Jeffrey
