Building our church up, in, and out A couple years ago, the Elders of the church read Mike Breen’s book, Missional Communities. Mike defines a Missional Community as a group of 35-85 people gathered around a common mission and committed to the three practices of Up, In, and Out. The size alone communicates that this is not another small group ministry under a new label, as small groups are generally identified as 8-15 people. In addition, the purpose that holds the group together is a clearly identified way of blessing and impacting the world for Christ, whereas most small groups gather around Bible study, support or fellowship.

Each Missional Community is to determine its own missional focus.

Regardless of missional focus, all participants in every missional community are to practice the three disciplines of: • Up - intentionally connecting with the Lord.

• In - intentionally connecting with each other.

• Out - intentionally connecting with the world.

For us Christians this order makes sense and is the normal way we prioritize the practices. We recognize that one needs to have a relationship with the Lord that results in a growing relationship with the Lord’s family, and sends us out into the world as witnesses.

While in writing Breen presents the practices in the order of Up, In, and Out, each Missional Community is to put them into practice in the order of Out, In, and Up. Why? Because non-Christians are more likely to join us in what they see as a meaningful service to the world (Out).

tunity to introduce them to the Lord. Hence, while Christians may follow the order of Up, In, and Out, non-Christians will come to the Lord through Out, In and Up. When the session identified “Building our Church Up, In and Out” as the theme and focus for the rest of 2017 and all of 2018, the session was not so concerned with the order as with ensuring that all three practices are put into place and that we grow our church through and as a result of practicing Up, In, and Out. The committees and team of DHPC are called upon by the session to come together and identify concrete ways to accomplish Up, In, and Out. At the same time, the session recognizes that you, the members, may have ideas and ways that you would like to gather people around the three practices.

Has God placed a specific missional focus on your heart? Has the Lord given you a vision for a concrete way to deep our relationships with each other? Has the Spirit given you clarity on how we can grow in our relationship with the Lord?

SINGING IN COVENANT GROUPS

By Marcia Fishman Hopefully, you have gotten a glimpse of what Covenant Groups are at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church as you read past Echoes articles throughout the last year. Within every article an element of Covenant Groups was shared and explained. This last article will focus on singing within the groups.

Why sing in a Covenant Group? “What if I don’t like to sing?” or “I just don’t have a voice for singing.” Singing is universal. It is a form of worship and God hears our hearts as we sing. I don’t think we are ever off-key in God’s mind when our heart is focused on praising Him. Scripture gives countless examples of singing as a form of praise and worship. People learned about God and who He is and what He has done through song. All of Exodus 15 was put to song after crossing the Red Sea. It was a song of remembrance as well as praise. We have the Songs of Asaph and the Sons of Korah. The pilgrims sang these songs as they ascended to God’s temple. Psalms 46, 48, 76, 84 and 87 are a few examples of how psalms were put to music utilizing different musical instruments, whether they were based on a lament, praise or thanks.

James 5:13, “Is anyone cheerful, let him sing psalms.” James grew up with the psalms and saw the fruition of what was taught through the resurrection of his brother, Jesus.

Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

The library in Narthex 1 in our church houses many praise CDs as well as hymnals that you can check out. I have observed some Covenant Groups that have listened to praise music rather than singing. During this time, they meditated on the lyrics and afterward shared their thoughts about God. Some Covenant Groups have individuals who play instruments. It is a special time of singing together, whether it is an old beloved hymn or a contemporary piece of music.

Another idea is looking at the lives of many authors of beloved hymns. Their biographies provide so much insight into God changing lives and sanctifying them as they journeyed in their faith.

This also applies to our modern day lyricists. It provides a richer appreciation and understanding of the lyrics as you sing them.

Whether old hymns of the past or our most recent contemporary hymns, our intent is to praise God for who He is and to get a better glimpse of His character.

Participants in Covenant Groups come together to praise and worship God through: • Gathering: Fellowship, sharing God sightings and God moments • Caring: Prayer, sharing highs and lows • Growing: Bible Study, a time of learning and reflection upon Scripture • Going: Witnessing, sharing what God is calling us to do • Praising: Worshiping God through songs • Celebration: Remembrance of the Last Supper (two times per year) If you are interested in learning more about Covenant Groups at DHPC please call the church office and you will be connected with the elder for Covenant Groups.

Many authors of our songs of praise got their ideas from scripture.

Martin Luther wrote “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” by reading Psalm 46:4 & 5.

SUMMER WORSHIP BEGINS JUNE 4 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 24!

Beginning June 4, Desert Hills Presbyterian Church will go to its Summer Worship times.

• Traditional Worship will be at 9:00 am • Praise Worship will be at 11:00 am • Nursery and Childcare will be available at both worship services.

• Sunday School for children ages Kindergarten through 6th grade will be offered for the month of June.

• Families are encouraged to worship together during July and August.

• Family worship activities will be available in the back of the Sanctuary and Fellowship Center.

These times will be in place until September 24.

WE WILL RESUME OUR THREE WORSHIP SERVICES SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1 Mark your calendar for these date changes. We look forward to worshipping with you through the summer months!

HOMELESS HYGIENE KITS Thanks to DHPC, in the past five months we have been able to provide almost 500 hygiene kits for the homeless in downtown Phoenix. However, the need is greater than our supplies. We need additional help.

DHPC VETERANS’ STORIES PUBLISHED Since You Asked: Arizona Veterans Share Their Memories Volume XIII, Phoenix Edition 1

Many thanks to the following veterans and writers for volunteering their stories and time to the Veterans Heritage Project, 2016 – 2017!

Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret) 1/1967 – 1/1987 Interviewed by VHP Founder Barbara Hatch Dave Hulbert, Captain, U.S. Air Force (Ret) 10/1963 – 10/1968 Interviewed by DHPC high school senior, Conrad McDermott Lynn Oates, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Ret) 9/1971 – 3/1975 Interviewed by DHPC middle school 8th grader, Anders Olson Three veterans from Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, Susan Cyganiewicz, Dave Hulbert, and Lynn Oates, who all served during the Vietnam War, participated in the Veterans Heritage Project this past school year with DHPC’s youth in the church’s newly formed VHP chapter.

Copies of the book can be found in the church library and local community libraries. The Troop Care Ministry also plans to highlight these veterans’ stories in a future issue of Echoes. Get to know these incredible people who so bravely served our country, and are a part of our church family! Then be sure to thank them for their service, and for sharing a little bit about themselves with us!

This year’s volume pays a special tribute to women veterans who have so admirably served our nation, thus the light pink stripe on the book’s cover. It represents the contributions of six of the forty VHP chapters, including the first non-school chapter formed, our very own DHPC Chapter, and includes over 240 men and women veterans’ stories! The book will be archived with the Veterans History Project, which is part of the American Folklife Center, at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Conrad McDermott, Anders Olson, and VHP Founder Barbara Hatch each interviewed a veteran, then put their stories to pen and paper. After final approval by the veterans, the stories were published in the Project’s annual compendium.

THANK YOU, KATHLEEN! We would like to recognize and thank Kathleen Harris, Director of Family Ministries, for assisting us during our first year in introducing the Veterans Heritage Project to the youth of our church. Last fall, she organized and helped conduct the kickoff training session for the youth and their parents.

Kathleen played a key role in all our communications with the youth, and kept us informed as to their progress throughout the entire process. Thank you, Kathleen, for all the support you have given us in launching our church’s very own VHP Chapter!

Graham Benham has enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, and has signed up to serve for six years. He is scheduled to depart August 15th for Training Center Cape May, in New Jersey, where he will attend recruit training for eight weeks. While there, he will explore his career options, and further training will be determined. Graham has been at

MANY THANKS TO ARCH RAMBEAU! Head Chapter Advisor and Organizer of DHPC’s Veterans Heritage Project Chapter For many years, it was the desire of the Troop Care Ministry Team to interview our church’s veterans, and record their stories. After learning of this, Arch Rambeau, a member of the church since 1997, joined the TCM Team because he, too, felt strongly the importance of pursuing the endeavor.

The team was impressed with the mission and work of Veterans Heritage Project, first started at the local Cactus Shadows High School and now in over two dozen schools across the state. So, Arch approached the founder, Barbara Hatch, about the possibility of forming a chapter outside of a school organization, and in a church. Thrilled, Barbara shared that she had been contemplating how

our church since he was six years old! He is the son of Brent and Jamie Benham, and the eldest of brothers and sisters Clark, Bessie, Abigail, Royalty (foster), and Prince (foster).

Jack Nelson has enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and has signed up to serve for six years. He is scheduled to depart June 22nd for eight weeks of recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, in Illinois. He will then be immediately stationed at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, in Goose Creek (Charleston area), South Carolina for 2 years, where he will study nuclear engineering. Jack has been running through our church halls since he was two years old! He is the son of Mark and Susan Nelson, and has an older and a younger sister, Jordan and Kennedy.

Through Arch’s dedicated leadership, and a lot of time and effort, he not only organized our brand new chapter last fall, but also led us, as Head Chapter Advisor, through our first year of goals and accomplishments! He has attended advisor trainings, organized student trainings, assisted our students with their interviews, and has provided guidance in all aspects of writing the stories, including meeting deadlines and editing.

VETERANS HONORED AT ANNUAL BOOK SIGNING RECEPTION

On April 9th, Veterans Heritage Project (VHP), held its annual Book Signing Reception for military veterans whose stories make up this year’s Volume XIII: Since You Asked, Phoenix Edition 1. The event took place at ASU West, where students spent hours beforehand setting up and preparing the halls and large reception room with refreshments, patriotic decorations, banners and signs, and posting veterans’ pictures.

veterans took their places along the perimeter of the expansive room, in order of military service eras, starting with WWII and ending with the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, to sign their names where their stories appeared, in everyone’s books. The room was buzzing with excitement and chatter! There were special guest speakers, including the main speaker, Lieutenant General Carol Mutter (Ret), U.S. Marine Corps, who shared a brief history and her thoughts and observations on women serving our country in the armed forces. A Moment of Silence was held for those recently-passed veterans whose stories had been published in earlier volumes; our own Bill Rintelmann was among those remembered.

The book signing immediately followed the ceremony. Arguably the highlight of the event,

Over 400 Veterans, their families, student interviewers, VHP leadership, and invited guests, including local government and school officials, and representatives from the U.S. Veterans Administration, attended the event. Also present, and in keeping with this year’s theme of women’s contributions to the country, were those who were known as Rosie Riveters during WWII (wearing blue shirts and polka-dotted red scarves), and Gold Star Wives who lost their husbands during the Vietnam War. Their stories are also included in the book.

Before the ceremony began, VHP Chapter Advisors, the board members of the organization, and financial contributors and sponsors gathered at a private reception, The Ring of Honor.

There, we heard remarks on the goals and recent accomplishments of the organization, and had the privilege to meet honored guests such as the event’s main speaker, Lt. General Carol Mutter, (Ret), U.S. Marine Corps, the first woman in history to be appointed to the position of a three-star General – worldwide!

Arch and Rhonda just had to sneak in Katelyn, Arch’s wife Laree, and Shirley Klein to meet her, too! (Shirley also serves on the Troop Care Ministry Team, and heads up the entire care package ministry for TCM!)

Troop Care Ministry gifts a copy to each veteran and student writer appearing in the edition.

Katelyn has been training and learning the technical side of filming interviews this year. Soon to be eligible as a 7th grader, she is already planning over the summer school break to conduct her first interview and write a DHPC veteran’s story for next year’s book! VHP has created a desire for her to also learn and record the experiences of the veterans in her family.

CONGREGATIONAL NURSE What is Inflammation?

By Mary Kay Thurston, RN We all know when something on or in our body is inflamed: red, warm to touch and painful. But what is it really? Inflammation is quite a complicated deal. The inflammatory response is a “sequential reaction to cell injury.” It neutralizes and dilutes the “inflammatory agent” or whatever it is that is causing the inflammation, removes necrotic materials and establishes an environment suitable for healing and repair.

Inflammation is not a synonym for infection.

Inflammation is always present with infection, but infection is not always present with inflammation. Infection involves invasion of tissues or cells by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. Inflammation can be caused by bacteria, fungi and viruses but also can be caused by heat, radiation, trauma, chemicals, allergens and an autoimmune reaction.

Inflammation can be: 1. Acute: the healing occurs in 2 to 3 weeks and usually leaves no residual damage.

2. Sub-acute: has the features of the acute process, but lasts longer, such as infective endocarditis that can last weeks to months.

3. Chronic: persists for weeks, months or even years, causing repeated injury to the tissues such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteomyelitis.

The mechanism of inflammation is basically the same regardless of the injuring agent. The inten-

sity of the response depends on the extent and severity of injury and on the reactive capacity of the injured person. The inflammatory response can be divided into: 1. V ascular response: After cell injury or cell death, blood vessels briefly constrict, then the damaged cells release chemicals that cause the vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow, raising blood pressure and causing redness, heat and swelling at the injury site. Platelets release growth factors that start the healing process.

2. C ellular response: White blood cells and other defensive cells circulating in the blood vessels get routed to the site of injury. These cells consume bacteria, other foreign material and damaged cells, then die. The accumulation of the dead white blood cells, digested bacteria and other cell debris is what we term “pus.”

Three to seven days later, another type of defensive cell, a monocyte, appears on site. They consume any remaining foreign or dead bodies and help in cleaning up the area before healing can occur. These long living cells help in the healing process.

Lastly, lymphocytes arrive later at the site of injury. These long-loving cells give us longterm immunity to outside infections.

Inflammation is divided into:

The local response to inflammation, including redness, heat, pain, swelling and loss of function.

•

Systemic responses to inflammation including general malaise, nausea and anorexia, increased pulse and respiratory rate and fever.

•

Tertiary intention repair healing occurs with delayed suturing of a wound in which two layers of issue are sutured together after infection is controlled. This usually results in a larger and deeper scar.

Healing is the final phase of the inflammatory response. It includes: 1. Regeneration or the replacement of lost cells and tissues with cells of the same type.

If you stuck with reading all of this, I applaud you!

I warned you at the beginning that inflammation is a very complicated deal and actually there is more to it than I have listed here.

2. Repair which is healing as a result of lost cells being replaced by connective tissue. Repair is the more common type of healing and usually results in scar formation.

Remember the best healing we can have is constant awareness of God’s Holy Spirit surrounding us every minute of every day and our connecting with Him through prayer, studying the Holy Scriptures and daily/ routinely quieting our busy lives. Breathe deeply and slowly. Quiet the inner chatter and “Be still and Know that I am God” Psalm 46:10.

This can occur by: •

Primary intention repair is when the incision edges are close together, such as a paper cut or a surgical incision.

Secondary intension repair is when wounds occur from trauma, ulceration, and infection and have wide, irregular wound margins with extensive tissue loss. These take longer to heal and do so from the edges of the wound inward and from the bottom of the wound upward
