WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY In Galatians 6, Paul tells us to “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” At Desert Hills our Walking Beside team members have been trained and organized to do just that. Old Glory, Stars and Stripes, the Star Spangled Banner As we celebrate 4th of July, Independence Day, we should remember the symbol of our Nation, the American Flag. From its inception, the American Flag has been an important part of our nation’s history. Surviving over 200 years, the flag represents our unity as one people in both triumphs and crises. The American flag has been used to demonstrate our rebellion against tyranny, our nationalism, and our determination to free the world from Totalitarianism. The flag is so important that its history tells the story of America itself. The flag went through many variations before
becoming the flag we all know and love. So where did the design come from? The earliest use of stripes in flags in what was to become America is from the “Sons of Liberty” Flag, from June 14, 1767. Our flag is an inspiring symbol that unites us all as American citizens. The unique history of the American flag follows the history of our country and reminds us of the triumphant beginning of the United States. The 13 stripes: a symbol of the first 13 colonies. The stars: a symbol of our country's 50 United States. As our country grew and developed, so did our flag. It has followed the fate of the country itself and, in the future, our flag may even change again. Today, our flag remains a vibrant symbol of the American principles of democracy, justice, and freedom, and of course the everlasting memory of those who have sacrificed their lives defending these intrinsic principles of the United States of America. page 8

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Just so you know, I thought long and hard about this one. I’m sure this hymn is a favorite of many of you, so how could I change the words?? While you still may be mad at me, let me explain why I substituted another text for the traditional one in our hymnal… For one thing, only the second half of that last phrase, “the traditional one in our hymnal”, is accurate. The actual traditional text of the hymn begins “Ein’ feste Burg ist unser Gott,” as it was written by Martin Luther around 1529 in German. OK, OK, so maybe you meant traditional translation. While I will concede that the translation in our hymnal (by Frederick Henry Hedge in 1852) is the most common translation, there are over seventy English translations. Here is the first line from a few of them: “Our God is a defence and towre, A good armoure and good weapon” (the first English translation, 1539) “A mighty fortress is Our God, A trusty shield and weapon” (this is the second most “common”) “God is our fortress and our rock, our mighty help in danger” It has been translated into many languages. Here are a few fun ones: Ein nerth a'n cadarn D r yw Duw (Welsh) Vår Gud är oss en väldig borg (Swedish) 我神乃是大能堡壘 (Chinese) I grew up singing the text we sang today, so for me, that is the traditional one. However, that’s not why I chose to use it. The Hedge translation is less literal than the original German, and there are some lines in today’s translation (from the Lutheran Book of Worship) that seem to be more dramatic and/or personal. Here are two examples: Hedge

“Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also— The body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still: His kingdom is forever.”
“Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The kingdom’s ours forever!”
Both translations have merit—and poetry is an art and not a science—but “hordes” and “devour us” are certainly more dramatic than “filled” and “undo us,” and the German word (verschlingen) actually means “devour.” But it is the second example that really demonstrates why I chose to impose this translation upon you. Let’s start with the first line: in the Hedge, we are “letting go” of things, while in the LBW they are being taken from us. That’s a much more powerful statement and portrays the spirit of the hymn, which is the attack of the powers of evil on us, and, again, it is more faithful to the German original (nehmen = ”take”). And what are they taking? In the Hedge, it’s “goods and kindred” and “this mortal life”, while in the other it is “house, goods, honor, child, or spouse,” and life is “wrenched away.” “Child or spouse” certainly hits home more with me and is more personal than “kindred.” Whenever I sing that line, it’s incredibly emotional. I get choked up and sometimes have trouble even singing the final statement, which is the GOOD NEWS! That seems a fitting metaphor for our struggle against spiritual warfare. After enduring the attacks during our earthly life, our faith can falter (like my voice) and it can be difficult to make the bold proclamation at the end of the hymn. And when I compare that last line in the two translations, the Hedge (“His kingdom is forever.”) lacks an important nuance found in the LBW (The kingdom’s ours forever!”). It is true that God’s kingdom is forever, but in the second translation, the kingdom’s OURS forever! The assurance that we are part of God’s kingdom is important! So, my purpose isn’t for you to experience the same things I do when singing this hymn text. The point is for the Holy Spirit to work something new in YOUR hearts and minds as you sing an old favorite.
