SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY July 19, 2020, 8:30am and 11:00am

PRELUDE

O God, Beyond All Praising Jeffrey Anthony, organ

arr. Jeffrey Honoré

* CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:

O come, let us sing for joy to the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before God’s presence with thanksgiving in our hearts. Let us shout joyfully to God with songs of praise. Let us turn to the Lord in prayer.

Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us 1. Savior, like a shepherd lead us, Much we need Thy tender care; In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, For our use Thy folds prepare: Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast bought us, Thine we are; Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

3. Thou hast promised to receive us, Poor and sinful tho' we be; Thou hast mercy to relieve us, Grace to cleanse and pow'r to free: Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Early let us turn to Thee; Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Early let us turn to Thee.

2. We are Thine, do Thou befriend us, Be the Guardian of our way; Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us, Seek us when we go astray: Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Hear, O hear us when we pray; Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Hear, O hear us when we pray.

4. Early let us seek Thy favor, Early let us do Thy will; Blessed Lord and only Savior, With Thy love our beings fill: Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast loved us, love us still; Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast loved us, love us still.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 2

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved You with our whole heart and mind and strength; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In Your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader:

All:

It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM

O God Beyond All Praising O God beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; for we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: we lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, we honour and adore you, our great and mighty Lord.

Michael Perry

Then hear, O gracious Saviour, accept the love we bring, that we who know your favour may serve you as our king; and whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, we'll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: to marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, and make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE

Mark 6:1-13

1

Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his page 3

relatives and in his own home.” 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. 8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. he prayed to the Lord. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN

God Has Spoken by His Prophets 1. God has spoken by His prophets, Spoken His unchanging Word, Each from age to age proclaiming God, the one, the righteous Lord. In the world's despair and turmoil One firm anchor holds us fast: God is King, His throne eternal, God the First and God the Last.

#407

2. God has spoken by Christ Jesus, Christ the everlasting Son, Brightness of the Father's glory, With the Father ever one; Spoken by the Word incarnate, God of God, ere time was born; Light of Light, to earth descending, Christ as God in human form.

3. God is speaking by His Spirit, Speaking to our hearts again; In the ageless Word expounding God's own message, now as then. Thro' the rise and fall of nations One sure faith yet standing fast: God abides, His Word unchanging, God the First and God the Last. OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE

ARE YOU IN NEED OF PRAYER? DO YOU HAVE A JOY TO SHARE? Prayer cards are located in each pew pocket and around the campus The spread of the coronavirus across the world and our country has created an incredibly stressful environment for all of us, especially those with underlying health conditions. Because we are socially isolated and the media bombards us with the latest numbers on COVID-19 cases and deaths, we experience a roller coaster of emotions. Our reactions can fluctuate from disbelief, denial, anxiety, fear, anger, and even depression. If you’d like someone to talk with, our team members would be glad to visit with you by phone or in person.
