SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday, January 9, 2022 9:00AM/10:30AM PRELUDE WORDS OF WELCOME *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: What does the Lord require of you? People: To seek justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with our God. Leader: Then let us follow Christ in all of life. People: We strive to follow the Lord in all we do and say. Leader: Let us seek the Lord in prayer. *PRAYER OF INVOCATION *HYMN #640
Sweet Hour of Prayer
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 2
*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord, our lips often say, “Thy Kingdom Come,” but our hearts are far from seeking Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. We put our hope in other things and other projects, and in the end are surprised at our disappointment. Our actions center on fulfilling our desires and seldom center on preparing the way for Your coming. Renew our faith in Your Kingdom and restore our hope in Your coming. For it is in Christ Jesus that we live and move and have our being. Amen. ASSURANCE 1 John 1:19 Leader: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM
Walk in the Light
Refrain: We’ll walk in the light, beautiful light. Come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright. Shine all around us by day and by night. Jesus, the light of the world.
arr. André Thomas
Hark the herald angels sing. Jesus, the light of the world. Glory to the new-born King. Jesus, the light of the world.
Hail, the heav'n-born Prince of Peace. Jesus, the light of the world. Christ, the everlasting Lord! Jesus, the light of the world. Refrain
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE Jeremiah 29:11-14 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.” Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! page 3
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *HYMN #89, vs. 1,3,5

SCRIPTURE Luke 2:41-52 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. SERMON *HYMN #713
"SEEKING THE LORD" Seek Ye First
*BENEDICTION & RESPONSE Now unto Him Now unto Him who is able to keep you from falling And to make you stand in His presence blameless and with great joy. To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Be the glory and the majesty, dominion and authority, Both now and forever. Amen! *Postlude

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members. Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn

Wyatt Earp “A Life on the Frontier”
Arts at the Rocks showcases their newly renovated stage with Wyatt Earp “A Life on the Frontier”. This is a one-man play performed by Wyatt Earp’s Great Grand Nephew and namesake, Wyatt Earp. It is the story of the legendary lawman that Hollywood didn’t tell! Set in the mid 1920’s an elderly Wyatt Earp tells of his adventures during the final days of the American frontier from Arizona to Alaska. The year is 1928; the place is the couples Los Angeles, California apartment. Wyatt reluctantly speaks to (a fictional reporter) Mr. Noble of his time in Tombstone, Arizona. He continues with his life afterwards and occasionally turbulent times of the couple’s 47-year life together as they traveled and prospected throughout the west and Alaska. Meet the man not the myth!

Women’s Bible Studies for the New Year Zoom Mondays at 6:30 PM
Beginning January 10 and January 13!
Join sisters in Christ as we study Hebrews. This 7-week, DVD-based study is taught by Lisa Harper and both groups are led by Kathleen Harris. Please purZoom & In-person chase your book before the first class. Two chances for study: Monday at Thursdays at 10:00 AM 6:30pm via Zoom or Thursday at 10:00am in-person and via Zoom. A little about the study..."Hebrews was a sermon for a specific people and culture in the midst of martyrdom and persecution, but is also so relevant for us today, reminding us to continue walking toward Jesus regardless of our culture or our circumstances. Join Lisa as she journeys through this bridge between the Old and New Testaments to get to the heart of the matter: Jesus is our accessible King. He is not a faraway God, but an up-close Redeemer who draws near to us. Hebrews helps women make the connection between God the Father and God the Son and reminds us that Jesus is supreme, but He is also compassionate, empathetic, and loving to no end. Lisa Harper makes digging into Hebrews fun and doable, as only she can, without losing an ounce of depth."
For more information or to sign up please contact Kathleen @ 602-741-3429 cell (call or text) or email kharris@deserthills.org
Join us for a verse by verse expository Bible study of 1 Corinthians. Beginning January 24 Mondays at 10:00 AM on Zoom
1 Corinthians challenges believers to examine every aspect of their lives through the lens of the Gospel. First Corinthians begins by addressing the people of God as those who are "sanctified by Christ Jesus, called to be saints" or "holy ones" (1Cor. 1:2) And yet, in his absence and in the presence of a corrupt culture many problems developed in the church which Paul felt compelled to address. In his letter, he shows how wide-reaching the Gospel is in its applicability to every area of life and how, as Christians, we can live to glorify God in our home, church and community relationships.
