They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’” Yet even then their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. Judson W. Van De Venter was a painter turned evangelist who wrote I Surrender All in 1896. He said that it was written “in memory of the time when, after a long struggle, I had surrendered and dedicated my life to active Christian service.” Winfield S. Weeden was the musician who worked with Van De Venter in his evangelistic meetings. He wrote the tune SURRENDER for this text in 1896. Text and tune were first published together that same year. You may recall from last week that Holy, Holy, Holy—our first hymn this morning—also had a tune that was written for the specific text. Jim’s sermon last week dealt with conflict. In a conflict, the object is to win; defeat or surrender means failure. Nevertheless, Christ calls His followers to totally surrender themselves to Him.

Weekly reservations are still required to attend. In addition, The Session is continuing its policy that masks or face shields are required for everyone who attends worship with the exception of children age five and under (who must remain with guardians at all times). A mask or face shield must be worn when you are entering the building, during the worship service and the entire time you are on the church campus (bring one from home or one will be provided). For those who are unable to wear a mask or face shield due to medical reasons, The Session feels that you are safer at home.
