PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord Jesus, you call us to watchfulness and prayer, but we are distracted and tired. You ask us to join with you in praying for your suffering for the salvation of the world, but we are more interested in seeking our own comfort. You invited us to come and reason together about life and love, but we are too engaged in our debates with the world. You desire to free us from our sins, but we want to fulfill our sinful desires and call it freedom. So, turn us unto you, O’Lord, and we shall be turned indeed. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? The text of this morning’s offertory, Go to Dark Gethsemane, was originally published in 1820. The tune first appeared in 1853 as a setting for the hymn text Rock of Ages, which (coincidentally?) happens to be our final hymn today. Sometimes hymn tunes were written for a specific hymn text. Holy, Holy, Holy, for example, was first published in 1861 with the text and tune that we know today. However, it was common for texts to be sung to different tunes, which can be done as long as the text and tune have the same meter. You may notice that we occasionally sing an unfamiliar hymn text with a familiar tune. Some tunes are popular and have more than one text associated with them. A good example of this is the tune HYFRYDOL, which is the tune for four hymns in our hymnal: #17 Our Great Savior, #244 Come, Thou LongExpected Jesus, #309 I Will Sing of My Redeemer, and #377 Alleluia, Sing to Jesus. We even have a case of this today, as the first hymn, Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation, has the same tune as Angels from the Realms of Glory, which we sang two weeks ago (when the scripture passage from 1 Corinthians included: By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. Another coincidence?)
