ORDER OF WORSHIP Good Friday, April 10, 2020

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Come, let us gather again in the shadow of the Cross of Christ. People: We gather to remember the overwhelming evidence of God’s ultimate sacrifice of love for the world. Leader: Who would have guessed that the height and depth, the length and width of God’s love might look like this: our forsaken savior on a cross? People: Certainly not us. Not us, who are too often lost amid the world’s distractions and responsibilities. Not us, for whom self-righteousness and sin are the norm. Leader: Let us gather again in the shadow of the Cross of Christ and that we may die to sin and rise to new life in Christ Jesus. People: Jesus lived and died for us. We will live and die for him. *PRAYER OF INVOCATION *HYMN

The Old Rugged Cross

#327

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suff’ring and shame; And I love that old cross, where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain.

O the old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary. Refrain

Refrain So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down. I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it someday for a crown.

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For ‘twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died To pardon and sanctify me. Refrain

SCRIPTURE John 17:1-5

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true; Its shame and reproach gladly bear. Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away, Where His glory forever I’ll share. Refrain

Glorify Your Son

1

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Jesus on Trial

6

Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. 9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. 12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them. 13 “Crucify him!” they shouted. 14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. 16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord Jesus, had we been on trial that day, there would be no doubt that we would have been found guilty, guilty of sinning, and guilty of falling short of the glory you hoped for in us. We do not love you with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. We do not love our neighbors as ourselves. Instead, we each have gone astray and done what is right in our own eyes. Holiness is far from us. So, we cry out for salvation, for forgiveness, and for the restoration of the glory of your image within us. Lord, be glorified in us today. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (1 Peter 2:24) Leader: Christ himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by his wounds we have been healed. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. SCRIPTURE Mark 15: 21-39

Crucifixion

21

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. 25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. 33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” 36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” page 3

HYMN

Beneath the Cross of Jesus Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand; The shadow of a mighty rock Within a weary land, A home within the wilderness, A rest upon the way From the burning of the noontide heat And the burden of the day.

#320

Upon the cross of Jesus Mine eyes at times can see The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me. And from my smitten heart, with tears, These wonders I confess: The wonder of His glorious love, And my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow For my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than The sunshine of His face; Content to let the world go by, To know no gain nor loss, My sinful self—my only shame, My glory—all the cross.

SCRIPTURE Mark 15: 40-47

Stone Covered Tomb

40

Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. 42

It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Leader: People:

What is your only comfort, in life and in death? That I belong - body and soul, in life and in death - not to myself but to my faithful savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of His own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that He protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit His purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him. Amen.

SCRIPTURE John 17:6-26 6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected page 4

them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. 13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” HOMILY

Jesus’ Prayer for Us

Rev. Jim Noble

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. HYMN

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded O sacred Head, now wounded With grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown. How pale Thou art with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn; How does that visage languish, Which once was bright as morn!

#316

What Thou, my Lord, has suffered Was all for sinners’ gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior; ‘Tis I deserve Thy place. Look on me with Thy favor; Assist me with Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this, Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me Thine forever; And, should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never Outlive my love to Thee.
