GATHERING

PRELUDE

ANTHEM Thy Will Be Done / My Time Has Come Craig Courtney

*THE INVITATION

Leader: Come, let us gather tonight in the shadow of the Cross of Christ.

People: We gather to remember the overwhelming evidence of God’s ultimate sacrifice of love for the world.

Leader: Who would have guessed that the height and depth, the length and width of God’s love might look like this: Our Savior on a Cross?

People: Certainly not us. Not us, who are too often lost amid the world’s distractions and responsibilities. Not us, for whom self righteousness and sin are the norm.

Leader: Let us gather again in the shadow of the Cross of Christ, that we may die to sin, and rise to new life in Jesus Christ.

People: On this night we all gather in the shadow of the Cross of Christ.

*HYMN Beneath the Cross of Jesus

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious Lord Jesus, had we been on trial that day, there would be no doubt that we would have been found guilty. Guilty of sinning, guilty of falling short of your hopes for us, guilty of denying You. Holiness is far from us. So, we cry out for salvation, for forgiveness and for the restoration of the glory of Your image within us. Lord have mercy on us sinners. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (1 John 1:9)

Leader: If we confess our sins God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM

Matthew 27:32-44

Thou Wouldst Fain Destroy the Temple

And the crowd then passing by him, all did rail upon him, and wagging their heads at him, they said unto him!

Thou wouldst fain destroy the temple; If thou be Jesus, Son of the Father, now from the cross descend, that we may believe thee, and behold thee, that we may behold thee.
