Centering Our Lives on Christ Patrick was born to Christian parents and his father served as a deacon in the church. At the age of sixteen he was kidnapped by raiders and sold into slavery. After six years he managed to escape and return home. Amazingly, and as testimony to the power of God’s love and grace, Patrick felt God’s call to return as a missionary to the very people who had bought him as a slave. For the next twenty-nine years he shared the Gospel, led many to faith and changed the face of Ireland. He is popularly known today as St. Patrick.

Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,

One of the prayers Patrick wrote is called “Patrick’s Breastplate.” It stands in the genre of what are known as “centering prayers.” It centers our lives on Christ by having us look to Christ alone for all we need in life. It also centers us by calling us to live for Christ alone. Finally, it is often pointed out that the prayer is not so much design to create a new reality as to remind the Christian of what is already real - “In Him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28) I offer a portion of this prayer that it may help center us all on Christ as we move through life and begin lent.

Christ in hearts of all who love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name, The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same. The Three in One, and One in Three, Of Whom all nature hath creation, Eternal Father, Spirit, Word: Praise to the Lord of my salvation, Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Interview with Jeffrey Anthony, Traditional Music Director Eddie: Jeffrey, now that you are settled in a bit, we appreciate your taking the time to talk with us. Jeffrey: I’m glad that you and Susan asked me. Eddie: So, for openers, would you give us a fingernail sketch of your musical education and directorial experience? Jeffrey: Sure. I have earned three music degrees: Bachelor of Music Education from Indiana University, Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from ASU, and a Master of Sacred Music - Choral Conducting from Luther Seminary/St. Olaf College. Since 1989, I have directed church choirs in mostly Lutheran and Presbyterian churches. My last job was at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg, VA where I was music director and organist. I was also the assistant music director of the Blacksburg Master Chorale, a community choir of about one hundred members. I also have done many shows, clinics, festivals, etc. but if anyone is interested in those I'll be glad to send them a resume .... at no charge! Eddie: And a very impressive and extensive resume it is - no doubt one of the reasons we offered you the job so quickly. I understand that your wife and son are remaining in Virginia for a while. Could you tell us a little bit about that? Jeffrey: Certainly. My son, Jonathan, and my wife, Gail, are remaining in Virginia until our house sells or Jonathan finishes his freshman year in high school, whichever comes first. Gail works from home for her job in technical support with Greenway Healthcare, so she can move anytime. Jonathan, however, is in a high school band that was selected to perform at a prestigious national band festival in February. Out of 215 bands that applied, only 17 were chosen, so he would like to participate in that and finish out the school year in Virginia. I was happy that

they could come at Christmas and got to meet everyone. Our daughter, Juliana, is a freshman trombone performance major at ASU and will be attending DHPC. In the meantime, I am living a bit like a nomad, moving here and there. So if anyone would happen to have a spare casita or need a housesitter, call me! Susan: Well, we will pass the word and keep our ears open. So, what ideas might you have for enhancing the traditional music program at DHPC? Jeffrey: Well, one of my favorite things to do is to use existing groups in different ways, like perhaps incorporating handbells into scripture readings or adding special choral endings by the choir on hymns. And of course my number one favorite would be to develop a multigenerational band within the congregation to play during services and within the community perhaps for an ecumenical service. So if you know anyone in the congregation who does or used to play an instrument, please ask them to call me. I'm sure in a congregation like this, there must be a lot of talent. Eddie: Interesting you should mention a multigenerational group. We very much want to increase our youth group in the church. What thoughts might you have on that? Jeffrey: I am starting already to work with the home school children that meet here at the church. I would hope to interest them, their friends and maybe their parents in playing an instrument and joining our congregational band. I would also like to develop relationships with the local schools to get students involved from there. Susan: Well we know that you have done that in the past and we look forward to your introducing such a program at DHPC. Eddie and I can promise that you would get a lot of support from our pastors and the congregation. And, Wow! I've heard that you were a co-star in a TV series. That sounds really exciting. Could you share that story with us?

FEBRUARY - MARCH 2018

Jeffrey: Sure. My sister is a casting director in Los Angeles. One episode of one of her shows, "Better off Ted," featured three German business executives. Knowing that I “spreche Deutsch,” she cast me as one of the businessmen. It was a unique and fun experience; I even had my own special director-style chair! There was always food available on the set, and I was treated like royalty. It’s easy to see how actors get big egos! (You can look me up on imdb.com)

Jeffrey: Well, maybe one other - I played in the Joseph Wytko Saxophone Quartet from 1987-1999. The quartet was invited by the office of the President to perform in the historic East Room of the White House in 1993. We also got a private tour of the White House. And if you think the TSA is overly aggressive, you should go through the security required to get into there. Going inside the White House was an incredible experience, being in a place with so much history and significance. Oh, and

Susan: That is really wonderful. So is there anything else you would like to add to this interview? Jeffrey: Only to say that I am very happy to be here. One of my family's objectives with this job change was to find permanent church home and, based my experience so far, I feel very comfortable that we have found it - at least I know I have and I'm sure my wife and family will feel the same.

Eddie: Truly a great experience. Any other unique experiences like that to share with us?

the paper hand towels in the bathrooms even had the presidential logo on them. (OK, I might have taken one as a souvenir. Hey, they were only paper...) Following the White House appearance, we performed a “Return from the White House” concert in Gammage Auditorium that was broadcast live on KAET Television and KBAQ Radio.

Your Buildings and Grounds Committee has been busy!

The two sanctuary HVAC units have very old electrical breakers that are causing some equipment issues. We will be replacing the breakers prior to the start of the summer season.

New carpeting was installed throughout the administration level. Revamped the admin offices so that they are available for meeting use as well as staff needs.

Several members attended a church campus security and safety meeting put on by the Scottsdale Police Department. We will be preparing a plan and working with them to be sure our members will always be safe on our campus at all times.

Our sanctuary roof parapet walls were resealed to stop leakage into our sanctuary.

We have been working with the organ and lighting group to prepare an installation plan for our new organ and update our lighting, video, and sound systems.

Replaced the wireless mic system in the FC due to T-Mobile purchasing the 600 MHz band.

Over the years, we have had difficulty getting packages delivered to our church by the various shipping groups. We worked with the City of Scottsdale and the post office to restore package service and in the process now have mail service to our campus. Look for our new mail box on campus. We will still maintain our PO box for the present. For those of you interested, our actual property address and mailing address is: 34605 North Tom Darlington Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85266 and not Scottsdale Road as many of us have thought.

With new Scottsdale temporary signage rules, we are now able to do special church event advertising by our two marquee signs. This was used for promoting our Christmas Eve services. The FC elevator was refit with new guides to remove the vibration and noise that many noticed when they used it. Two new NEST thermostats were installed in our sanctuary to give us better control over heating and air-conditioning. We can set these remotely during services without walking to them.

Blessings,

The FC Kitchen water heater failed in mid-December and we are looking to replace it with another tank or an on-demand system. We are working with the county to determine what is allowed.

Here are comments from attendees about this conference: “We attended the XO Marriage Conference in 2017. Having never been part of an event like this we didn’t know what to expect. The Friday evening conference was so captivating and informative, and we met other attendees we didn’t know. On Saturday morning we were so excited to get started. There were several times we just listened as if they were talking to only Kathy and me while we held hands. We purchased our tickets for the 2018 conference probably about 30 seconds after receiving the email telling us about this year’s conference. Oh, by the way, the snacks were really good too.” Ken and Kathy Rogers

Norm Miller, Interstate Batteries Chairman, began his career with the company shortly after graduating from North Texas State University (now University of North Texas) in 1962. In the past 56 years, he has moved through the ranks

“By far, the first XO Marriage Conference I attended in 2015 was the most eye opening, refreshing, and unforgettable experience in my 30-year marriage. This two-day conference served to renew my perspective that with commitment and the help of the Holy Spirit, a deeply rewarding and life-long partnership can be a reality. The conference also restored my belief that a faith-based marriage delivers the promise that your success in achieving a healthy and strong marriage is 100% assured, and that true happiness as God intended, is achievable. And I have attended every year since. It is never too late to experience the marriage of your dreams.”

Miller assumed the President and Chairman roles in 1978 after working 16 years under his mentor, company founder John Searcy. Since then, Interstate has grown to become the number one replacement battery in North America. Searcy developed the successful Interstate system of marketing, product delivery and service, and Miller expanded the team that established the current Interstate network of more that 200 retail battery centers, 300 distributors and 200,000 dealers across the U.S., Canada, Central and South America. Unit battery sales have steadily improved from the 1965 total of 250,000 to a world record of more than 18 million replacement battery sales for a twelve-month period ending this past fiscal year.

From Your Missionary: Jacqy Kilgore Emmanuel has given us a new dawn, He has lead us into the Year of Our Lord 2018. A sunrise; a portrait of God's majesty. Someone once said, " the sunrise is a neon sign penned by God. It says, ' I Love You!'" He did; it does! 2018 brings so much anticipation of the NEW to come: faces and places, 'home', language... And the fulfillment of a promise, a seed planted so many years ago in a young teenage girl. A promise tucked inside the folds of my heart for more than 50 years; carried tenderly across the globe to Panama, Mongolia, Jamaica, Scotland, Israel, India, and Lebanon. As I read the Old Testament story of Abraham and Sarah, I understand the feeling of being OLD! I just celebrated my 63rd birthday. My three year old granddaughter Naomi asked, "G'ge, how old are you?" When she found out she replied, "63... that's really old!" All she can fathom are the ages of her brother and sisters: 5, 7, and 8. I can laugh as I read of Sarah's chuckle, "a child in my old age." My bones aren't quite as limber and my glasses need to be strengthened again and there aren't enough ropes to jump to make this body a Victoria's 'Angel'. Yet, my heart still pounds with joy when I think of my Savior's Call. My dreams are still vivid with the laughter of women gathering to hear the stories of Jesus. Can you imagine Abraham and Sarah packing up their tent and gathering their flocks as they departed Ur for the Promised Land? Somewhere along the way, the Lord took Abram to a mountaintop

10

and planted a seed of promise. God gave Abram a new name, Abraham--Father of many nations--and Sarai He gave the name Sarah, for she would give birth to Isaac, the promised heir. As they walked into the Chaldean desert, they didn't have a road map or hotel reservations. I don't imagine they squabbled about which restaurant they would visit for dinner. They stepped out in faith. The Bible says Abraham believed and it was credited to him as righteousness. The Father held all the details of their journey in His hands just as He holds all the details of my future. The stepping out, that's my part! The details and plans for a future in the Kingdom are His. One day this spring, I will begin to pack suitcases as I prepare to go with God. He holds all the details of my journey from Texas to Arizona, to Mississippi, and finally to the Middle East. I am praying you will join me on this adventure with God. If you have not yet become a member of my team of supporters, would you ask God today. PRAYER REQUESTS • • • •

I'm at 77.9%. Pray for the blessings of the remaining 23%. Pray for Presentation on January 26 at Gulf South Presbytery. Pray for Presentation on February 1st and 2nd at Presbytery of the West. Praise the Lord for the amazing band of believers Team He has

As you may know, our organ is on its last “pedals”, so to speak. For several years, our music folks have been trying to nurse the old organ along by employing specialists and using expensive, hard-to-get, parts. Any of you who have heard the several "blowups" by the organ this year during services realize that DHPC needs a new organ. We have been studying and reviewing this situation, along with other speaker and sound difficulties in our sanctuary, for several years and are pleased to tell you that, after considerable research, we have identified an outstanding digital / pipe combination organ, with six ranks of pipes that will fit our church beautifully. It is called the Rodgers Infinity organ, which is the same organ as recently purchased by Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church at Pima and Cave Creek Roads. The cost of this organ with pipes, and the related sound and lighting improvements needed in our sanctuary, is $450,000. With God's grace, we already have nearly half of that money in hand. A few people, who learned of the need for a new organ and wanted to make a donation during 2017 before the federal tax program changes, have already donated just over $200,000. Our remaining need is, therefore, $250,000. Given the generous nature of the DHPC congregation, we have every hope of celebrating Easter with a new organ - the pipes are being individually hand-made and will be installed a few months after the console and digital part of the organ is installed. Pictured below is a pipe combination organ, similar to the instrument we have selected, however ours will include many more pipes than are shown here and will be specifically designed for our sanctuary. The organ committee has formally initiated a fund-raising campaign to raise the rest of the money. Just as our worship experience is being greatly enhanced by the recent musical contributions, such as the instrumentalists and the choir's cantata, we fully expect our new organ to greatly contribute to our worship services and expression of God's love at DHPC. We will be very pleased to discuss the new organ acquisition program with you. We know that many people in our congregation will want to be a part of this effort and please be assured that donations of any size will be welcome and appreciated. In His service, Lloyd Meyer Co Chair, DHPC Organ Fund

The New Children and Student Ministry:

Items Needed for Hygiene Kits:

Missing your grandchildren or want to make a difference in the life of a child?

Each month, Covenant Groups continue to provide over 100 Hygiene kits to the homeless in downtown Phoenix. To date, over 1,000 kits have been distributed to people in need.

Children and Student Ministry is offering an incredible opportunity to install values in children, teach young people about the love of Jesus Christ and to empower and facilitate growth in the next generation. We have a new vision for the children of our church and we want you to be part of that vision. On March 4 at 12:15 we want to invite you to a free lunch and for you to hear how you can partner with us in prayer and through other means to help raise up a new generation in our church. Members of DHPC and yes, winter visitors or if you are not even a member yet, are invited to this luncheon. Please mark SUNDAY, MARCH 4 12:15 on your calendar to learn more about the relationship God wants to enter into with the children of our church and community.

Our supplies of shampoo, conditioner, lotion and combs are very low and we would appreciate your help. When you stay at a hotel, please bring the sample toiletries home with you and place them in the collection box marked "hygiene kit" items in the hallway in the Narthex. The need is great and your help will be much appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact John Thurston at 480-220-668.

For further information call, Pastor Simon Kim at 314-3684614 or Laurann Cook at 714-270-8121.

Worship Opportunities

Communion Preparers Needed:

The sacrament of Communion is provided to the DHPC Congregation on the first Sunday of every month and on special occasions such as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, and Ash Wednesday.

Ushers Needed:

We are in need of ushers to welcome our friends to all three worship services! To become an usher you need a desire to be helpful, the ability to arrive 20-30 minutes before the worship service begins, stay for a few minutes afterwards to tidy the area, and help with the offering collection during the service. This is an easy, fun, and rewarding ministry. Please contact Ross Mulder (krmulder5@hotmail.com or 480-488-2528) or Diane Hillwig (dianehillwig@gmail.com or 480-459-5063) if you would like to be included on our rotating list of available ushers.

We would like to increase our group of volunteers to prepare the communion elements on a rotating basis for the worship services. Two people are needed for each month, and this ministry is a 2-3 hour commitment per month. Preparers need to be at the church one hour prior to the scheduled service. You will receive training prior to assigning you a date, and you may select the month (or months) you wish to prepare Communion. What a joyous way to celebrate our love of God and His love for us. Please contact Diane Hillwig to serve in this important ministry: dianehillwig@gmail.com or call 480-459-5063.

FROM THE

CONGREGATIONAL NURSE NEW YEAR, NEW FOCUS By Mary Kay Thurston, RN

Isaiah 38:15-16 “…..I will walk humbly all my years because of this anguish of my soul. O Lord, by these things people live, and in all these is the life of my spirit. O restore me to health and make me live!” (A writing of Hezekiah King of Judah after his illness and recovery)

There is also an optional four devotionals provided at the back of the resource for a total of 52 devotionals, one for each week of the year. The Fountain Hills Saxophone Quartet (FHSQ) formed in September 2013 to bring the vibrant and varied sounds of sax quartet literature to the town of Fountain Hills. From classical to jazz, from ragtime to toe-tapping patriotic favorites, the FHSQ brings a unique blend of style and sound to any occasion. They will be joined by our Traditional Music Director, Jeffrey Anthony, for several numbers, so if you enjoy his playing in worship, you won’t want to miss this concert!
