SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY February 21, 2021, 8:15/9:45AM

PRELUDE

Sonata II: Fuga Natalie Mealey, organ

Felix Mendelssohn

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:

HYMN #403

Come, with undivided attention, to meet God, who calls you away from old routines. Our souls wait for God in silence. Our hope is in God, our rock and our salvation. Come without anxiety or fear, for God cares for you. We come with devotion to our Lord, in whom time is fulfilled and life has meaning. Let us seek the Lord in prayer.

Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation

1. Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone, Chosen of the Lord and precious, Binding all the Church in one, Holy Zion's help forever, And her confidence alone.

3. Here vouchsafe to all Thy servants What they ask of Thee to gain, What they gain from Thee forever With the blessed to retain, And hereafter in Thy glory Evermore with Thee to reign.

2. To this temple, where we call Thee, Come, O Lord of hosts, today. With accustomed loving-kindness, Hear Thy people as they pray, And Thy fullest benediction Shed within its walls alway.

4. Laud and honor to the Father, Laud and honor to the Son, Laud and honor to the Spirit; Ever Three and ever One. One in might, and One in glory While unending ages run.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 3

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (from Psalm 51) Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love. According to your abundant mercy blot out our transgressions. Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity, and cleanse us from our sin. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us. Against you, you alone, have we sinned, and done what is evil in your sight. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us. Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and sustain us with a willing spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ASSURANCE Leader: All:

2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

ANTHEM

On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand Chancel Choir

arr. R. MacIntosh

On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, And cast a wishful eye To Canaan's fair and happy land, Where my possessions lie.

No chilling winds or pois'nous breath Can reach that healthful shore; Sickness and sorrow, pain and death, Are felt and feared no more. Refrain

Refrain: I am bound for the Promised Land; I am bound for the Promised Land. O who will come and go with me? I am bound for the Promised Land.

When shall I reach that happy place, And be forever blest? When I shall see my Father's face, And in His bosom rest? Refrain

All o'er those wide extended plains Shines one eternal day; There God the Son forever reigns, And scatters night away. Refrain PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Numbers 13:1-2 &17-25

The Lord said to Moses, “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.” When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he said, “Go up through the Negev and on into the hill country. See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo Hamath. They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) When they reached the Valley of Eshkol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #575

Leaning On the Everlasting Arms

1. What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms. What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms.

2. O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the everlasting arms; O how bright the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain

Refrain: Leaning, leaning, Safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, Leaning on the everlasting arms.

3. What have I to dread, what have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain

SERMON

“DARE TO BE NEW: FROM SLAVERY TO FREEDOM”

*HYMN #526

Rev. Jim Noble

The Solid Rock

1. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

3. His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. Refrain

Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found; Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne. Refrain

2. When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil. Refrain *BENEDICTION
