Dear Members and Friends of DHPC, Back to Basics, brass tacks, nitty-gritty, nuts and bolts, practicalities, principles, rudiments…the dictionary says back to basics is stressing simplicity and adherence to fundamental principles, a back-to-basics approach to living for those whose lives have become complicated. I know everyone would agree that life is certainly complicated, and at times we need to get back to the basics of our Christian faith. When I arrived at DHPC I started a series called “The Greats,” reading the greats of theology and church history. Our time studying together these past 14 years has been a blessing to me. This Fall we will study Luther’s Large Catechism. Why Luther? Reformer Martin Luther was the German monk who began the Protestant Reformation in 1517. His 95 theses set in motion tremendous reform within the Church, called into question some of the tenets of Roman Catholicism that eventually led to his being excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. Why Study Luther’s Large Catechism? Luther’s Large Catechism was written to aid Christians in gaining a basic understanding and application of God’s word for their lives. In addition, it laid the foundation for households sharing and discussing the Smaller Catechism with their children, and a basic discipleship tool for outreach and new believers. I invite you to join me as we study Luther’s Large Catechism together on Thursdays beginning October 10 from 3:00-4:30 pm in the Flex Room. We will be using the official Lutheran translation “Luther’s Large Catechism with Study Questions, published by Concordia Publishing House. You can purchase your copy directly from Concordia Publishing or you favorite book supplier. See you in class on October 10th at 3:00. Blessings, Jim

Brett Everett, Assistant Pastor beverett@deserthills.org 480-488-3384 I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:3-6 NIV) Greetings DHPC Family, These words of Paul to the church at Philippi have been resonating in my heart, since I first met many of you during my initial visits with the search committee. Incidentally, and as a side note, you selected a fine group of people to represent DHPC. Their love for each of you and this church was absolutely contagious! Well, fast forward then to meetings with the session and staff, the “meet and greet” social, and the worship services on my candidating Sunday, and these verses became even more ingrained in my mind. More so, my heart has quickly filled with joy and thanksgiving for each of you. My family and I have been overwhelmed in fact, by the outpouring of love and support – not to mention the followup from week to week relating to concern for our home search, the start of a new school year for my kids, service opportunities for my family at the church, and of course, my assimilation into the staff, culture and ministries here at DHPC. You all have been so incredibly good to us and we have felt an instant connection to the Desert Hills family. Consequently, Heather, Nathaniel, Hannah and I are

6

each filled with joy relating to our partnership with you in the gospel. Perhaps you may be wondering however, what exactly my role will be in that partnership as I co-labor in Christ alongside each of you at DHPC. Generally speaking, my primary responsibilities center on three areas of ministry: discipleship, pastoral care/ visitation, and outreach. In the area of discipleship, I will have the amazing privilege of working alongside some incredibly gifted teachers, home study leaders, elders, and staff as we evaluate DHPC’s present discipleship offerings and then together build for a promising future on an already strong foundation. This will include providing training and curriculum resources for teachers along with bringing in competent voices for Christian discipleship-related lectures and seminars and teaching some classes as well. On the latter, I am looking forward to teaching an intergenerational Advent study as well as Heather and I starting a home group in our home. Regarding the area of pastoral care and visitation, I will also be working alongside an incredibly gifted pool of volunteers and staff who have faithfully provided care in a manner that is second to none. I will seek to contribute staff leadership, assist with coordination, and work on the redevelopment of our student ministries and the refining of our senior ministries. I will also enjoy the awesome privilege of visiting with you in your homes, hospitals, special events, etc. I must say I am greatly looking for-

ward to walking through life beside you and am deeply honored to have this opportunity. In the area of outreach, I will be working with Lyndsi Bigbee to track and visit with guests – encouraging them to assimilate more fully into the life of our beloved church. We want to ensure that no one falls through the cracks and that everyone is constantly aware of what Desert Hills offers for them by way of care, fellowship, discipleship, mission, worship and evangelism. Finally, as your Assistant Pastor, I will gratefully participate in other assigned ministerial duties as needs arise. You will continue to see me serving as a worship leader/ participant in each of the worship services. And, when called upon to do so, I will also preach, perform weddings and memorial services, provide counseling, and participate in the church’s local and global mission opportunities. Generally speaking, you will see me around! In closing and on behalf of my family, I do wish to thank you for welcoming us into the DHPC family. We truly look forward to getting to know each of you as we joyfully serve alongside you as partners in sharing the gospel – all the while giving thanks to God for each one of you and the great things we will accomplish together as we advance his kingdom here on earth. To God be the glory! In Christ’s love, Pastor Brett, Heather, Nathaniel and Hannah Everett

What an honor it was to lead my first book study at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church! For six consecutive Mondays in July and August, Shelly Core, Pastor Brett Everett, and I lead a discussion on the importance of sharing our Christian faith. Attendees averaged around eight each week and consisted of a good mix of long-time and new members. Together we read the slim book “Tell Someone: You Can Share the Good News” by Greg Laurie. Each week we discussed a portion of the book and enjoyed a thoughtprovoking video containing excerpts from Greg’s sermons. I was initially drawn to this book by the title when it was first presented to me by Shelly at a special session meeting focused on Outreach. Shelly had previously read the book and thought I might be interested as well. I quickly finished it and was so impressed with Greg’s approachable ideas. I pondered what to do about this book and how to share it with our congregation until one day I felt prompted in my spirit to lead a book study. Consequently, I am the kind of person who loves quality over quantity, and if Jesus started a spiritual revolution with twelve disciples then eight attendees was certainly good enough for me! Needless to say, this inquisitive, bright, passionate group did not disappoint. For those who do not know Greg Laurie’s story, I must say that I find his testimony and faith example to be quite impressive. Greg Laurie has been the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship church in California for over forty years. He also began the large-scale public evangelistic events called Harvest Crusade, which you may recall was held at Glendale’s State Farm Stadium a few years ago in June. Not only is he an incredible preacher, but he is a faithful believer. Eleven years ago, Greg and

his wife Cathe lost their firstborn son, Christopher, in a car crash. Christopher was 33 years old, and was survived by his pregnant wife and young daughter. While I can’t help but guess that for many of us this horrific tragedy would shake or perhaps even shatter our faith, Greg has instead continued on in his pastoral ministry, preaching the Good News of the Gospel to multitudes of people. He’s even written over seventy books about his faith! Anyone who has been through such trials and still writes about the goodness of the Lord seems genuine to me, and I trusted he had real wisdom to offer. Greg Laurie writes, “Most people come to faith because someone shares

the Gospel with them” and “Statistics indicate that ninety-five percent of all Christians have never lead another person to Christ.” With such words and convictions, we read on. “You might protest, ‘God could never use someone like me!’ Actually He can and He will if you will let Him. It could happen even before the day is over. He will not force you to share your faith, but He will prompt you. And when you take that step of faith, He will empower and use you.” Each week as a class we discussed our fears, failures, joys, and questions. For many of us, family members came to mind… and friends… and acquaintances. Yet as each class came and

went, and more chapters were read and discussed, my prayer was always that each member of our little class would find themselves saying at some point, “Why, even I can share the Good News!” I knew in my heart that they could! I am so grateful for every single person (you know who you are) who showed up to the book study; who asked hard questions; who wrestled with doubts and fears; who showed up excited to talk about how to share our faith with the world. My best word of advice I could give them was simply something God has shown me again and again. Whether I have been on a plane, walking down the street, at a music festival, at a restaurant - wherever the Lord has lead me to share the Good News and pray for someone the best thing to remember is this secret: the pressure is off. Our simple task is to share the Gospel. We get to sit back and watch God do the rest. The Holy Spirt will meet us exactly where we are. We never know how much a stranger needs to hear what we have to say. There’s so much good we could do in this world simply be being available to God to share about our faith in Christ. After all this talk we as a class decided that we want to put our faith into action. Over the next few months we will be taking the bold step of going out into the community to pray with strangers and sharing our faith. Would you (yes, you) consider joining us? All God needs is a little availability. My prayer is that we as a church would continually show ourselves available to all that God wishes to accomplish in us, through us, and for us for the advancement of the Kingdom. May all the glory be His, and to Jesus Christ, forever. Until the whole world knows, Lyndsi Bigbee, Director of Outreach

Worldwide Communion – October 6 Join us at DHPC as we serve communion at all three worship services. Our plan is to have video greetings from our Sister Churches around the world. Come and see!

Usher Ministry Ushers are one of the most important ministries at DHPC! If you are interested in helping on Sunday mornings at any of the contemporary or traditional worship services, Diane Hillwig or Kathleen Harris would love to answer your questions.

The sole aim of worship at The Gathering, or any other worship service, is to glorify Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He alone is worthy of worship, and we have every reason to offer worship. We worship Him for who He is and for all He’s done. Therefore, whatever is done in the service to connect the people with God is thoughtfully selected with this aim in mind. Just as the EPC’s Book Of Order states, our worship consists of the Word, of music, of prayer, of offerings, and of the sacraments. It is within these guidelines that we keep grounded in Spirit and truth as we worship the Lord, and it is within these guidelines that we stay connected and unified with all the body of Christ at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, traditional and contemporary alike. The approach to these elements of worship may vary some from the traditional to the contemporary service, but the heart and aim is the same. There is much to be loved and appreciated within the traditional service: a respect for the rich history and wisdom of past saints, a faithfulness to the Bible despite cultural pressures, a desire to instill basic doctrine and deep theology, and a reverence for a Holy God that gives a sense of His otherness. The Gathering service values these aspects as well, and we intentionally seek to retain them. One of the most defining features of

The Gathering, that which makes it the contemporary service, is of course the music. The New Testament certainly does not limit God’s people to any one kind of music, only that we should be singing “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” for the purpose of worship (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). I believe God purposefully gave us the freedom to worship with all different styles of music because He created us

the Holy pirit, used the common Greek so that all could understand the message. I think about the days when the Reformers were able to give the Holy Scriptures back to the people by translating it into the common tongue. And in a similar way, I see contemporary worship as a way that connects those who may not have had a religious upbringing to be able to understand the richness of Biblical truth and the otherness of our Holy God. At other times, it may appeal to those who need a “new song”. And of course, it is a way for some people to connect to God through a style that they love.

The music itself it offered in a holy and respectful manner, but its tone and instrumentation is recognizable to what’s popular in today’s musical “language”. Is our style the only style that’s acceptable? Certainly not! Is it the only style that is on the radio? No. It is simply one approach that we believe is valuable and is something that Desert Hills Presbyterian Church can offer to the with all different kinds of personali- community with pride. News From Our Congregational Nurse Mary KayThurston, RN Diabetes… What is It and What do the Hemoglobin A1C Numbers Mean? Are you too sweet? If you have one of the types of Diabetes Mellitus that could be a description of YOU…And that is not good… physiologically speaking. There are basically 3 types of Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes used to be known as Juvenile diabetes or insulindependent diabetes but can develop in Adults as well. It is a chronic condition when a person’s pancreas does not make insulin or so little insulin so they have to have insulin daily in order to stay alive. Insulin is a hormone that opens the cells so the blood sugar (glucose) can enter the cells and be burned for energy and nourishment. Different factors such as genetics, geography, age and some viruses may contribute to the development of Type 1 Diabetes. Even with modern research there is no known cure. Treatment focuses on managing blood sugar levels with Insulin, eating a healthy diet, exercise and lifestyle to prevent complications. Type 2 Diabetes is when a person’s pancreas still makes insulin but the person’s cells are resistant to the insulin or their pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to keep your blood sugars normal. It is also called Adult onset diabetes or Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes and may need oral medication to reduce the insulin resistance and lower blood sugar or sometimes the type 2 diabetic needs supplemental insulin in addition to the oral medication. Genetics, being overweight play a big role in the development of Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled/managed by losing weight, eating a healthy diet and exercising. If those measures are not sufficient to keep blood sugar levels normal then oral medication by its self or with insulin is needed.
