SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday, December 12, 2021 9:00AM/10:30AM PRELUDE

HYMN #271

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN #245, v. 4 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel O come, Desire of nations, bind All peoples in one heart and mind Bid envy, strife, and quarrels cease; Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace. Refrain Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy God, during this season of anticipation, we confess that we busy ourselves with many preparations and neglect preparing our hearts for your coming. Our relationships with you and our neighbors are wounded. We have failed to love as you love us. We do not always live in the joy of the Good News of Jesus Christ, whose coming we both celebrate and await. Forgive us, and mend what is broken. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON

John 3:16-17

Leader: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM

He Came Down Chancel Choir; Brad Ghaster, percussion

He came down that we may have love; He came down that we may have love; He came down that we may have love; Hallelujah forevermore!

Cameroon Traditional

He came down that we may have light… He came down that we may have peace… He came down that we may have joy...

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE

Genesis 12:1-4

The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! BAPTISM (10:30am) - Andrea Silverman

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #255, vs. 1 & 2

OFFERTORY

Breath of Heaven

Marge Sutton, Richard Cook, soloists; Barbara Cochran, piano

We have traveled many moonless nights, cold and weary with a babe inside. and I wonder what I've done. Holy Father, you have come and chosen me now to carry your son.

Amy Grant

Chorus: Breath of Heaven, Hold us together, be forever near us, Breath of Heaven. Breath of Heaven, Lighten our darkness, pour over us your holiness, for you are holy. Breath of Heaven.

We are waiting in a silent prayer, We are frightened by the load we bear. In a world as cold as stone Must we walk this path alone? Be with me now. Be with me now.

Do you wonder as you watch her face, if a wiser pair should have had our place? But we offer all we are, for the mercy of your plan. Help me be strong, Help me be, Help me Chorus

DOXOLOGY #815

OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE

Luke 1:39-55

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: ”Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promise to her!” And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Might One has done great things for me - holy is His name. His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as He promised our ancestors.” SERMON

“BE A BLESSING”

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members. Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn
