Pastor’s Message Jim Noble, Senior Pastor

jnoble@deserthills.org 480-488-3384

Dear Member and Friends of DHPC, As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, the passing of 2018, and the start of 2019 we do so with great thanks to God. I join with you in thanking God for the gift of his son, Jesus Christ and all that He accomplished for us. I thank him for the forgiveness of our sins, our adoption as sons and daughters of God, the gift of eternal life, and bringing us together as a family of faith. I pray that your walk with the Lord is growing deeper and your Christmas celebration is full of celebration. As 2018 comes to a close, I join with the session in thanking God for all he’s done for and through us. I encourage you to take time to read the session’s article in this Echoes that lists many, but not all, of the things we are thank for. I pray that you too are counting the blessings, miracles and wonders God has given you in 2018. As we look forward to 2019, may our new year’s resolutions include a closer walk with the Lord and a renewed commitment to be of service. As a church, our focus needs to be on reaching people in our community with the love of Christ and the gospel message. I encourage each of us to find three people this year we can disciple in Christ. Let’s keep our eyes, ears, and hearts open to what God is going to do next. Let us join with heavenly host in declaring, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased.” Peace in Christ,

Jim

Dear Brothers and Sisters, As we close the 2018 year we do so with celebration in our hearts. We are blessed to be a part of His Church at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, a congregation with a heart for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: More People, More Like Christ. As we look forward to the coming year, we want to share a snapshot in celebration of some of the ways the Lord is working in and through us all. WORSHIP… Love the Lord Our Traditional Worship continues to be blessed with the creativity of Jeffrey Anthony and our talented choir. This year we experienced new arrangements, various instrumental accompaniments, and wonderful Holy Week and Pentecost services. Additionally, together we succeeded in our capital campaign allowing for the addition of a new organ and pipes, a significant upgrade to that service. The new lighting, electrical systems, and sound improvements were needed and vital to the sanctuary, with new carpeting coming soon! Because of our partnership with Likewise Worship Collective, our Contemporary Worship was blessed with the addition of Mikey Moomey as our Gathering Worship Music Director. We significantly upgraded the service, now called “The Gathering,” adding a larger stage, stage setting, better lighting and sound systems, and increasing the capacity for tables and chairs. These enhancements were a major upgrade to Fellowship Center, impacting and improving all Church wide events in the use of the Center. If you haven’t recently been to The Gathering, you haven’t been to The Gathering. Come and check it out! DISCIPLESHIP… Keep God’s Word Our fall and spring courses, Bible studies, and covenant groups continue to increase in number as more of our members and community join together and learn more about and share in God’s Word, inside and outside the walls of our Church. Our Children Ministries has revamped our nurseries and school areas by updating the carpet and furnishings,

ensuring needed art supplies are available, and adding engaging curriculum and joyous teachers. Our youth ministry launched new music lessons on Sunday afternoons from 3:00-4:00 and Adventures Youth Group from 4:00-5:30. Each week these ministries are drawing 10-15 into fun discipleship relationships. In addition, a joint youth retreat was held in Prescott in September with our Leupp sister church that drew 9 kids. MINISTRIES… Loving One Another Our Care Ministries team, through the Board of Deacons, the Care Council, the Parish Shepherds, our Congregational Nurses, and Pastor Rob Johnston, are adding more miles, more visits each year. They service a large geographic area (Anthem, Carefree, Cave Creek, Glendale, Phoenix, and Scottsdale) in order to give care to our scattered Church family. Our Prayer Ministry team is large and dutifully at work, praying for each of us, quietly a support structure for all of us in our struggles and challenges. The Faith Based Grief Support Group meets weekly providing healing through sharing, laughter, and prayer in an open, co-ed, and non-denominational setting. Members find the group through outreach to our local community, local churches, and local care organizations. Our Fellowship and Outreach Ministries are felt throughout the Church in so many differing activities. Chatand-Chew has grown significantly, reaching into our community and touching members and non-members alike. Monthly visits to The Heritage reach those outside our walls who are no longer able to attend church worship services in person. The weekly use of our Church for homeschooling families has allowed members and staff the opportunity to share with local families and their children. The Fall Faith Festival is growing year after year, this past year there was a doubling in the number of families and their children that attended. Our Music & Arts Ministries continue to grow and expand every year. We are so very blessed with the talent we find in our chancel choir, handbell choir, and contemporary music team. Our members continue to share their talent in our arts workshops, Mostly Wednesday Workshops, and ongoing music lessons. •

MISSION… Be a Blessing

Looking Ahead

Members of our congregation pursued the revitalization and are expanding services of Chaplaincy for the Homeless, a program located in downtown Phoenix - one our Church has had a long history with and one that, because of their efforts, will remain a vehicle for support in our local community. We celebrate the deployment of Jacky K. into missionary work abroad. We also celebrate Ed and Nan McCallum, traveling worldwide as they equip pastors and missionaries through their organization, International Theological Education Network. We continue to assist in new communities of faith like our newest one in Phoenix through our support of Luke Parker - son of Tom and Gale Parker. Tom is the Former Director of Fuller Seminary Southwest. The Arts at the Rocks has been a welcome addition of vibrant and exciting concert series that provide another opportunity to invite the community into the Church. The Men’s Breakfast and Women’s Tea once again drew large crowds of people to the church and gave them an opportunity to hear the testimonies to the gospel and meet new friends. Operation Christmas Child continues to grow. Our Church Family continues to be generous in providing support to this outreach. God uses Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts to open doors for church-planting efforts in an unreached area of the world. Troop Care Ministry (TCM) provides faith-based support to military veterans and active duty personnel in the local community, at Leupp Presbyterian Church, and at Desert Hills, and encourages and uplifts them in their faith journeys. TCM packs and sends approximately 80 care packages a year to Active Duty personnel. The ministry recognizes and honors Veterans and Active Duty on patriotic holidays through educational communication, events such as the annual Veterans Day Program, and archiving their military service and stories through the Veterans Heritage Project. A new project is launching around Valentine’s Day to support Active Duty families in need at Luke AFB, with a grocery gift card drive.

DESERT HILLS

As we look ahead to 2019, Desert Hills will continue its commitment to More People, More Like Christ as we invite, inspire and challenge each other and the community around us to Love the Lord, Keep God’s Word, Love One another, and Be a Blessing. In particular we are planning for 2019 to be a year in which our focus is outward, reaching people in our community for Christ and inviting them into a meaningful relationship with God and with us. There are three ways in which you can be an active participant in this endeavor: First, join us in fervent prayer for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our community and us. It is the Holy Spirit alone who has the power to draw people to Christ and transform their lives. Therefore we must confess our own self-centeredness in spiritual matters, pray for a heart that genuinely loves the people of our community, and seek the courage to engage others with the Lord’s love and gospel. Second, join one of our strategic teams that are focusing on reaching out to one of three demographic groups in our community: those 60 and over, those 40-60, and those with young families. Third, invite three people into a church gathering or group in the coming year. Then help the person navigate their way to Christ and into our church community. Remember to stay open to the leading of the Holy Spirit and to look for the strategic opportunities the teams are developing. Desert Hills and its congregation have been moving more-and-more into the community, drawing families of all ages back into His Church – through our worship services, our discipleship programs, our ministries and fellowship, and individual missions. These things we do together are a light in the darkness to the local community around us. Our Church will continue to prioritize the depth of our Worship services, Discipleship programs, Care Ministries, and Music and Arts Ministries - providing support to the growth of our Fellowship and Outreach Ministries. Our Church is blessed in the area of music and arts. We will continue to grow and expand the concerts, teaching,

and sharing - providing more opportunities for friends and neighbors to join us. Our Children and Youth Ministries are a necessary support so needed for our members and for new families added into our Church. We are planning to hire a Youth Pastor to be able to provide the teaching and growth our children and youth require in today’s culture. Desert Hills’ Missional work is strong. In the coming year we plan to visit and work with our Sister Churches - Jamaica and Luepp - as well as support the various Missional work of our congregation -Chaplaincy for the Homeless, Caring Corps, Foothills Food Bank, and St. Mary’s Food Bank. To be like Jesus is to Bless the World. Jesus said, ”As the Father sent me, so I send you.” We go as witnesses to the power of our Lord to redeem and reconcile us

to God and to each other. Like Jesus, God calls us as individuals, households, and a faith community to go into the world to heal the sick, drive out evil, and share the Good News. port DHPC by creating a Specific Legacy for our Church in their estate documents. In addition to the dinner, what else is scheduled? Following the reception and dinner, you will receive an update on the Foundation and some of the interesting aspects of the Arizona Community Foundation, Arizona's largest nonprofit, charitable foundation. ACF handles the investment and administration activities for the DHPC Foundation.

DESERT HILLS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH FOUNDATION What is it? This is a dinner to recognize and thank the more than 60 members of Desert Hills Presbyterian Church who have committed to donating money to the DHPC Foundation in their wills. These donations will ensure that DHPC can continue serving our membership and local community by sharing the love and Word of God. Where is it? The Founder's Dinner will be held at The Boulder's Resort in the Boulders View Room which is located next to the Golf Pro Shop. Parking is available in the nearby lot.

May I join the Founder's group and attend the dinner? Of course! All who wish to become a DHPCF Founder are enthusiastically welcomed. All it takes is a commitment to make a testamentary gift to DHPCF in your estate documents. And, also, if you are planning to become a Founder but have not yet made the changes to your estate documents, you may still attend the dinner - simply complete and return a Foundation Pledge card to the Church or make a contribution now to the Foundation>Put Foundation in the memo section. Currently, we have about 60 Founders which puts us well on our way to reaching our target of 100 members. We greatly appreciate those who have chosen to support the mission of DHPC in the future and we look forward to meeting and talking with those of you who are considering a similar testamentary gift.

When is it? The dinner will take place on February 9, starting at 5:00p and ending about 7:00p.

I look forward to seeing you at our Founder's Dinner on February 9. Contact any members of the Board to declare your interest in joining the “Founders”.

What does the dinner cost? There is no cost. The dinner is being underwritten by members of the Foundation Board as a "thank you” to the Founders for their commitment to sup-

Join us for these concerts in January and February Valley Chamber Chorale Sunday, January 27, 2019, 4:00 P.M. The Valley Chamber Chorale, conducted by Dr. Christopher Samuel, is currently celebrating its 31st season. Area critics have applauded the Valley Chamber Chorale for its “gorgeous, silvery sound, and its refined, masterful, and precise singing.” Through skilled performances of choral programs featuring an eclectic repertoire with emphasis upon unaccompanied works of the Renaissance and selections by Twentieth Century American composers, the Chorale has engendered the refined blend which audiences find so appealing. Join us for this entertaining and educational concert. Denver and the Mile High Orchestra Friday, February 1, 2019, 7:00 P.M. Blending a red hot horn section, along with jazz and big band roots, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra have created a power funk sound that defies description and is unlike any other. With Denver Bierman writing and arranging the band’s music, the diverse sounds of legends such as Stevie Wonder, Chicago, and Earth Wind and Fire combine for a fresh look at contemporary pop, as well as old classics and hymns. Todd Allen & Family Ministries Sunday, February 24, 2019, 4:00 P.M. The Allens have been thrilling audiences worldwide with their unique blend of family harmony and energizing creativity for more than two decades. Traditional Worship for Advent and Christmas

Christmas Eve Worship Monday, December 24

The choirs and instrumentalists at DHPC are preparing for festive Advent and Christmas worship. The Chancel Choir, accompanied by orchestra, will present an Advent cantata at both traditional services on Sunday, December 16. It is a beautiful, reflective work that captures the waiting and anticipation of Advent. You won’t want to miss it! The choir and orchestra will also lead worship at 7:00 and 9:00 P.M. on Christmas Eve. In addition, the handbell choir will participate throughout Advent. They will also ring at the Christmas tree lighting for the town of Carefree on Friday evening, November 30.

Evening Worship: 5 p.m. – Family Worship Service – Fellowship Center; music by The Gathering musicians

Parking during Advent and through the winter months As our 9:45 a.m. worship service begins to feel full, we know that parking becomes an issue. If you are a regular attender who is able to park and walk from El Pedregal, it would be very helpful to leave more open parking places closer to the church for visitors and those with mobility issues. You may also wish to consider attending the 8:15 a.m. or 11:10 a.m. worship services to help alleviate crowding at the 9:45 a.m. worship. While our winter visiting friends are with us, we have the wonderful opportunity to make space for seasonal worshippers!

WELCOME MICHAEL MOOMEY, RAE & ARROW Mikey is The Gathering Worship Director. Mikey has a passion for worship as a way of life. He loves all aspects of God’s creation including the gift of family and friends, music, and art. Twelve years ago, he became a follower of Jesus and has devoted his life to serving God and people. Mikey completed his Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies at Arizona Christian University and has 11 years of ministry experience. He and his wife, Rae, have been married 4 years, and they have a daughter, Arrow, who is 2 years old. Mikey and Rae have served in many ways including worship, children’s ministry, youth ministry, missions and outreach. Rae has a passion for all things creative and speaking and teaching the word of God. She became a believer as a small child, but didn’t understand what it meant to have a relationship with Christ until she was invited to youth group at 15 years old. Their daughter, Arrow, is Rae’s biggest blessing, and motherhood brings her closer to Jesus each day! Rae and Mikey’s greatest desire is to see God glorified through exampling and encouraging worshipful living that is authentic, passionate, and transformational. Their prayer is to see people live out an authentic relationship with Jesus and to serve Him all their days.
