SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday, July 31, 2022 9:00am & 10:30am PRELUDE WORDS OF WELCOME *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:

We come to worship God, bringing with us our needs and those of our neighbors. We come to God, who comes to us in Jesus, who experienced human needs. We come with our faith and our doubts, we come with our hopes and our fears. We come as we are because it is God who invites us to come, and God has promised never to turn us away. Let us sing and wonder!

*HYMN #3, vs. 1, 3, 4

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, The holy catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy God, we come in confession for our lack of love. We have neither loved ourselves nor our neighbors. We have passed by suffering and misfortune because of fear or busyness or preoccupation. We have held prejudices against people as deep as those against the Samaritans. Forgive us and heal our pains. Amend our faults and guide us in ways of danger and compassion, for we pray in the name of Jesus, who cared for us even to the cross. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader: It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM

Psalm 150 Summer Choir

John Harper

Alleluia, Alleluia. Praise God in his holy place, Praise him in his mighty heav’ns, Praise him for his powerful deeds, Praise his surpassing greatness. Alleluia, Alleluia. O praise him with sound of trumpet, Praise him with lute and harp, Praise him with timbrel and dance, Praise him with strings and pipe. Alleluia, Alleluia. O praise him with resounding cymbals, Praise him with clashing of cymbals, Let everything that lives and that breathes give praise to the Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

2 Corinthians 5:16-21

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 16

Leader: All:

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #656, vs. 1, 3, 4

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE

Luke 10:25-37

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 25

26

“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?’

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 27

28

“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.’

29

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?’

In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 30

36

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” SERMON *HYMN #428

We affect lives through the power of prayer, the ministry of the Word, discipleship, and fellowship. (Excerpts from In Touch, June 11, 2022) It’s an awesome privilege to bear another’s burdens.
