*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People:

“If any want to become my followers,” said our Lord Jesus, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Let us follow Christ in all of life. Let us seek the Lord in prayer.

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

E. Perronet, J. Rippon & O. Holden

1. All hail the pow’r of Jesus' Name, Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him Lord of all; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him Lord of all.

3. Let every kindred, every tribe On this terrestrial ball, To Him all majesty ascribe, And crown Him Lord of all; To Him all majesty ascribe, And crown Him Lord of all.

2. Ye chosen seed of Israel's race, Ye ransomed from the fall, Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, And crown Him Lord of all; Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, And crown Him Lord of all.

4. O that with yonder sacred throng We at His feet may fall! We'll join the everlasting song, And crown Him Lord of all; We'll join the everlasting song, And crown Him Lord of all.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord, there are times when we sing your praises, but follow from a distance. We wave as you pass by, and for our willingness to wave our hands, we count ourselves as your loyal fans. Like all fans, we want you to meet our expectations, make us happy, and answer our every whim. You, however, call us to follow you and to lay down our lives, to sacrifice our lives, to give up our way of life, for you and the gospel. In all honesty, we are more interested in keeping our lives, and our way of life, than in giving it all up to follow you. Remove this hardened heart of ours, and give us a heart for you and the gospel. Makes us real disciples, by deepening our sacrificial love for you and each other. By this all people will know that we are your disciples. In your name we pray, Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader:

All:

It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

There Is a Redeemer

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SONG OF ILLUMINATION

Open Our Eyes, Lord

#633

Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. SCRIPTURE

Mark 8:22-26

They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.” Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #308

There Is a Redeemer

Melody Green

1. There is a Redeemer—Jesus, God’s own Son; Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One. Refrain: Thank you, O my Father, for giving us Your Son, And leaving Your Spirit till the work on earth is done. 2. Jesus, my Redeemer, name above all names; Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Hope for sinners slain. Refrain 3. When I stand in Glory, I will see His face; There I’ll serve my King forever in that holy place. Refrain -

OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY

Christus Paradox Summer Choir

Sylvia Dunston

You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd. You, Lord, are both prince and slave. You, peacemaker and swordbringer Of the way you took and gave. You the everlasting instant; You, whom we both scorn and crave.

You, who walk each day beside us, Sit in power at God’s side. You, who preach a way that’s narrow, Have a love that reaches wide. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our pilgrim guide.

Clothed in light upon the mountain, Stripped of might upon the cross, Shining in eternal glory, Beggar’d by a soldier’s toss, You, the everlasting instant; You, who are both gift and cost.

Worthy is our earthly Jesus! Worthy is our cosmic Christ! Worthy your defeat and vict’ry. Worthy still your peace and strife. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our death and life. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. You, who are our death and our life.

“WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?”

Rev. Jim Noble

*HYMN #676

O Jesus, I Have Promised

J. Bode & A. Mann

1. O Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; Be Thou forever near me, My Master and my Friend; I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my guide.

3. O let me hear Thee speaking In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will. O speak to reassure me, To hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, Thou guardian of my soul.

2. O let me feel Thee near me, The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear: My foes are ever near me, Around me and within; But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer, And shield my soul from sin.

4. O Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee, That where Thou art in glory There shall Thy servant be; And, Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, My Master and my Friend.

The spread of the coronavirus across the world and our country has created an incredibly stressful environment for all of us, especially those with underlying health conditions. Because we are socially isolated and the media bombards us with the latest numbers on COVID-19 cases and deaths, we experience a roller coaster of emotions. Our reactions can fluctuate from disbelief, denial, anxiety, fear, anger, and even depression. If you’d like someone to talk with, our team members would be glad to visit with you by phone or in person.

MESSAGE FROM THE CONGREGATIONAL NURSES… We will NOT be having our usual Fall influenza vaccine clinic this year. We do strongly advise everyone to get the vaccine. It is anticipated people who have had the Covid-10 virus are more likely to get influenza because of their weakened immune system. If you have a compromised immune system, for other reasons as well, check with your personal care physician for advice about taking the vaccine. You can get the Influenza vaccine at physician offices, Walgreens, CVS and Safeway pharmacies. Also due to the restrictions caused by the Covid-19 virus, we have not been having our monthly blood pressure clinics. If you need your BP checked, feel free to contact one of our congregational nurses and they will be happy to check yours individually. Cyndi Moulton, RN BSN 623-203-8357 or Mary Kay Thurston, RN 480-220-6679.

SUMMER SUNDAY SERVICE TIMES 9:00am Traditional 10:30am The Gathering Please contact the church office WEEKLY to make a reservation: admin@deserthills.org or (480) 488-3384

The Session is continuing its policy that masks or face shields are required for everyone who attends worship with the exception of children age five and under (who must remain with guardians at all times). A mask or face shield must be worn when you are entering the building, during the worship service and the entire time you are on the church campus (bring one from home or one will be provided). For those who are unable to wear a mask or face shield due to medical reasons, The Session feels that you are safer at home.
