Sonata No. 1: Mäßig schnell Natalie Mealey, organ

Paul Hindemith

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:

God makes His wisdom available to those who call upon Him. Yet, we fail to listen or hear but struggle to understand. Come and listen to the words of life and love. Let us hear and proclaim our faith in the one who brings life. Let us worship the God of life and wisdom whose words guide our life on the right paths.

Come, Christians, Join to Sing 1. Come, Christians, join to sing Alleluia! Amen! Loud praise to Christ, our King; Alleluia! Amen! Let all, with heart and voice, Before His throne rejoice; Praise is His gracious choice. Alleluia! Amen!

Christian H. Bateman

2. Come, lift your hearts on high, Alleluia! Amen! Let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen! He is our Guide and Friend; To us He’ll condescend; His love shall never end. Alleluia! Amen!

3. Praise yet our Christ again, Alleluia! Amen! Life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen! On heaven’s blissful shore, His goodness we’ll adore, Singing forevermore, “Alleluia! Amen!” *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord Jesus, your wisdom is available to us, but we do not listen or fail to understand. Your words are spoken, but we often pay no heed nor obey. Our tongues engage before our brains do and our hearts harden by our own familiarity with you. We want to be faithful to your word and led by your guidance, but we are so easily distracted by the world’s noise around us. Lord, forgive us when we are quick to speak and slow to understand... When we do not hear your wisdom in all the ways you speak to us... And when we do not even try to understand what it means to be your disciples. Lead us back to the path of wisdom and life, that we may truly live. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader:

All:

It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM

Take Us as We Are, O God Summer Choir Take us as we are, O God, and claim us as your own. As once you chose to tell your love in human flesh and bone, so let our lives be used to make your saving purpose known.

Break us open to disclose how brokenness can heal, wherever broken loaves suffice to give a crowd a meal and graves break open to release new life from death’s dread seal.

Bless us for your service, Lord; no power we devise will ever give us strength enough or make us truly wise, yet by your promise we can know the peace your grace supplies.

Give us to the world you love as light and salt and yeast, that we may nourish in your name the last, the lost, the least, until at length you call us all to your unending feast.

Daw/Fedak

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SONG OF ILLUMINATION

Open Our Eyes, Lord

#633

Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. page 3

SCRIPTURE

Mark 8:1-10

During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.” His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN

Dear Savior, Bounteous Are Thy Hands

tune: ST. PETER

1. Dear Savior, bounteous are thy hands, Thy mercies are unknown: Thy mighty word, thy great commands, Can bring thy blessings down.

4. But all their wants were soon supplied At thy commanding word-They ate, and all were satisfied, And then praised thee their Lord.

2. O Lord, how wond'rous are thy ways, Thy counsels none can know. Thy love, thy mercy and thy grace, Provides for all below.

5. O happy they, who on thee wait! And to thy call's attend; What joy and comforts will they meet, With thee, their Lord and friend.

3. Some thousands once had follow'd thee Into the wilderness; Thou hadst compassion them to see, Faint, hungry, and distress'd. OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY

DOXOLOGY #815

OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Mark 8:11-21 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side. The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.” They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.” Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied. “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.” He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

We’ll Understand It Better By and By

Rev. Brett Everett Charles A. Tindley

The spread of the coronavirus across the world and our country has created an incredibly stressful environment for all of us, especially those with underlying health conditions. Because we are socially isolated and the media bombards us with the latest numbers on COVID-19 cases and deaths, we experience a roller coaster of emotions. Our reactions can fluctuate from disbelief, denial, anxiety, fear, anger, and even depression. If you’d like someone to talk with, our team members would be glad to visit with you by phone or in person.
