SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday, August 22, 2021, 9:00AM/10:30AM PRELUDE
* CALL TO WORSHIP (Nehemiah 8:10) Leader: People: Leader: People:
Nehemiah said to the people, “Go, eat the festival foods, drink the sweet drinks, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared; For this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your refuge, your strength.”
HYMN #571, vs. 1,3,5
Trust and Obey
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 3
*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Leader: People: Leader:
What is the chief end, the main goal, and the real purpose of humanity? To glorify God and enjoy His presence forever. Let us confess our sins that separate us from the joy of the Lord.
ASSURANCE Leader: All: ANTHEM
2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. Jesus, Lord to Me Marjorie Sutton, soloist; Barbara Cochran, piano If I had seen the sunset On the day that Jesus died And felt the glow of that sunrise When the tomb was open wide Would I have known You Could I have seen That You were more than just a man You were Lord and King

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE
John 15:1-11
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, page 4
that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #479, vs. 1,2,4

OLD HUNDREDTH
Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE
Matthew 11:25-30
At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” SERMON *HYMN #788

What’s Going On In the Parking Lot? AT&T is doing upgrades within our bell tower. AT&T pays DHPC a monthly fee to use our bell tower for their equipment. These fees are used to endow the DHPC Fogdall Scholarship Fund. During the next 30 days, please take caution as the FC lower parking lot is blocked off and a temporary rubber speed bump is in the upper FC lot to protect the various cables being installed. Once the work is complete, both the bell tower and adjoining equipment building will be closed-up and painted. Questions? Contact… Richard Cook, Director Buildings & Grounds (714) 270-8119

Several members have spent numerous hours, days, weeks, and months enjoying cleaning our campus where we can be proud of how it NOW looks and that it is NOT overgrown as it had become. While we liked the natural look, it made our church look a bit unkept. With the wonderful monsoons that returned this year, we are now seeing crops of new growth springing up. We need to stay ahead of this growth and one way was to spray twice a year. To save this cost, we would prefer to see if you are willing to spend some individual time communing with the new growth and help it know that while we love it, we do not want all of it back; we want our campus looking inviting to our members, people considering membership, and our community at large. As little as 30 minutes can help uproot this new growth. You can just drop it at the spot or you can put it in a pile. If you prefer to rake an area, we would love that help also. We can even designate your own small private nature area for you to attend to. We have researched landscaping companies but most are quite expensive and we may have to seriously consider this if we cannot get help. We would prefer not to request additional funds annually to attend to this issue. To volunteer, please contact Richard Cook at (714) 270-8119 / bgstaff@deserthills.org
