SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY August 16, 2020, 9:00am

PRELUDE

Fugue in a, BWV 543 Natalie Mealey, organ

J.S. Bach

*CALL TO WORSHIP (Isaiah 49:14-16; John 20:25&27) Leader:

People: Leader: People:

Isaiah told how the people cried out, “The Lord has forsaken us, The Lord has forgotten us.” The Lord Responded, “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the child of her womb? Even these may forget, But I will not forget you! Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands!” Jesus said, “No greater love has anyone than this, that they lay down their life for a friend.” Then he laid down his life for us, as the good shepherd does for the sheep. With confidence in God’s love for us, we come into the Lord’s presence.

My Faith Looks up to Thee 1. My faith looks up to Thee, Thou, Lamb of Calvary. Savior divine! Now hear me while I pray, Take all my guilt away. O let me from this day Be wholly Thine!

#539, vs. 1-3

2. May Thy rich grace impart Strength to my fainting heart, My zeal inspire; As Thou hast died for me, O may my love to Thee Pure, warm, and changeless be A living fire!

3. While life's dark maze I tread, And griefs around me spread, Be Thou my guide; Bid darkness turn to day, Wipe sorrow's tears away, Nor let me ever stray From Thee aside. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 2

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

#813

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a burden. Set us free from a past we cannot change; open us to a future in which we can be changed; and grant us the grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image, through the power of Christ’s love. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader:

All:

It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM

She Came to Jesus Summer Choir

She came to Jesus from outside the fold — Syrophoenician! Persistent and bold! Looking to Jesus, she wanted to see One who would help her and set her child free.

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette

Claiming a blessing, a touch of God's grace, She knew God's love was not bounded by place. Jesus, you listened, debated — then healed — For in her asking, her faith was revealed.

God, you still bless those who seek you in prayer. You welcome dreamers who faithfully dare. In Christ, now risen, your mercy extends: Those on the outside are welcomed as friends.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SONG OF ILLUMINATION

Open Our Eyes, Lord

#633

Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. page 3

SCRIPTURE

Mark 7:24-30

Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.” She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN

Open My Eyes That I May See 1. Open my eyes that I may see Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me; Place in my hands the wonderful key That shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready, my God, Thy will to see; Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine.

#563

2. Open my ears that I may hear Voices of truth Thou sendest clear; And while the wave-notes fall on my ear, Everything false will disappear. Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready, my God, Thy will to see; Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine.

3. Open my mouth and let me bear Gladly the warm truth everywhere; Open my heart and let me prepare Love with Thy children, thus to share. Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready, my God, Thy will to see; Open my heart, illumine me, Spirit divine. OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand.

There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then, bursting forth in glorious Day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory sin’s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ.

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand; ‘Til He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I stand!

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

Rev. Jim Noble #21 vs. 1,2,4,5

1. O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer's praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace.

4. Hear Him, ye deaf; ye mute, His praise Your loosened tongues employ; Ye blind, on Jesus cast your gaze; And leap, ye lame, for joy.

2. Jesus! The Name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease, 'Tis music in the sinner's ears, 'Tis life and health and peace.

5. My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread thro' all the earth abroad The honors of Thy Name.

The spread of the coronavirus across the world and our country has created an incredibly stressful environment for all of us, especially those with underlying health conditions. Because we are socially isolated and the media bombards us with the latest numbers on COVID-19 cases and deaths, we experience a roller coaster of emotions. Our reactions can fluctuate from disbelief, denial, anxiety, fear, anger, and even depression. If you’d like someone to talk with, our team members would be glad to visit with you by phone or in person.
