SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday, August 15, 2021, 9:00AM/10:30AM PRELUDE

* CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People:

Who releases us from our bondage to sin? It is God who draws us up from the grave! Who feeds and tends our lives? It is the Risen Christ who nourishes us! Praise be to God who has forgiven and saved us! Praise be to Christ who calls us to worship and serve.

HYMN 33, vs. 1,3,4

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 3

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION We rejoice in the wonder of your resurrection, O Christ, but then tend to sink back into our old ways of thinking, behaving, and responding to people’s needs. Forgive us when we so easily become distracted by our own cares and worries that we ignore the needs of others around us. Forgive us when we forget your power and love for us. Forgive us when we, in our pride, struggle with your forgiveness. Charge us up, O Lord! Set our hearts to dancing! Give us a spirit for rejoicing, willing hearts and hands for helping, and voices for praising you forever! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE Leader: All:

2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

John 21:1-17

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon page 4

as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! [10:30AM] BAPTISM

SCRIPTURE

1 Timothy 1:12-17

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. SERMON

What’s Going On In the Parking Lot? AT&T’s subcontractor, Crown Castle, is doing upgrades within our bell tower. AT&T pays DHPC a monthly fee to use our bell tower for their equipment. These fees are used to endow the DHPC Fogdall Scholarship Fund. During the next 30 days, please take caution as the FC lower parking lot is blocked off and a temporary rubber speed bump is in the upper FC lot to protect the various cables being installed. Once the work is complete, both the bell tower and adjoining equipment building will be closed-up and painted. Question? Contact… Richard Cook, Director Buildings & Grounds (714) 270-8119
