SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY 9:45am, April 26, 2020
Be Still, My Soul
Jean Sibelius
*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: God’s mercies and grace are new every morning. People: Let us sing our songs of praise and proclaim the good news of the gospel. Leader: We gather in spirit with hearts full of gratitude, that our faith may be increased. People: We gather in hope that God would rekindle His gift that is within us. Leader: It is the Spirit God gave to us who gives us power, love and self-discipline. People: Come then Holy Spirit, as we join with Christians around the world, in the faith and love we share through Christ Jesus.
My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less
#526
1. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' Name. On Christ, the solid Rock I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
3. His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. On Christ, the solid Rock I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
2. When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil On Christ, the solid Rock I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
4. When He shall come with trumpet sound O may I then in Him be found; Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne. On Christ, the solid Rock I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
*AFFIRMATION
OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 2
*GLORY
BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, you have called us to live in sincere faith and to suffer for the gospel. Yet, our consciences are not clear and our faith is clouded by sin and uncertainty. Too quickly, we cast aside our trust in you when adversity strikes and we rely on our power rather than yours. Forgive us Jesus, we pray, for we are broken and fearful disciples. Take away from us a spirit of cowardice, and restore in us the spirit of power rightly used, of love unconditionally offered, and of self-discipline gracefully lived. And by your mercy, forgive us and increase our faith, that we may be faithful servants at your table. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (II Corinthians 5:17 ) Leader: If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature; the old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. ANTHEM
Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord
Felix Mendelssohn
Cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee. He never will suffer the righteous to fall. He is at thy right hand. Thy mercy, Lord, is great and far above the heav’ns. Let none be made ashamed that wait upon Thee. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE READING 1
How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave. 2
Bitterly she weeps at night, tears are on her cheeks. Among all her lovers there is no one to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies. 3
After affliction and harsh labor, Judah has gone into exile. She dwells among the nations; she finds no resting place. All who pursue her have overtaken her in the midst of her distress. Leader: This is the word of the Lord.
Lamentations 1:1-6 4
The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to her appointed festivals. All her gateways are desolate, her priests groan, her young women grieve, and she is in bitter anguish. 5
Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. The Lord has brought her grief because of her many sins. Her children have gone into exile, captive before the foe. 6
All the splendor has departed from Daughter Zion. Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; in weakness they have fled before the pursuer. All: Thanks be to God!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN
Be Still, My Soul
1. Be still, my soul! the Lord is on thy side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul! thy best, thy heav’nly Friend Thro’ thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
#712
2. Be still my soul! thy God doth undertake To guide the future as He has the past Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still my soul! the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
3. Be still, my soul! the hour is hast’ning on When we shall be forever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul! when change and tears are past, All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last. OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE

OF DEDICATION
SCRIPTURE READING 2 Timothy 1:3-14 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. 13
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

*HYMN
Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus 1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus Ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high his royal banner, It must not suffer loss: From vict'ry unto vict'ry His army he shall lead, Till ev'ry foe is vanquished, And Christ is Lord indeed.
3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, Stand in his strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, Ye dare not trust your own: Put on the gospel armor, Each piece put on with pray'r; where duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there.
2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, The trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict In this his glorious day: Ye that are men now serve him Against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger, And strength to strength oppose.
4. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; this day the noise of battle, the next the victor's song: to him that overcometh a crown of life shall be; he with the King of glory shall reign eternally.

MESSAGE FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE... As you may have expected, the church continues to need your financial support in these trying times. Presently we are not holding services on campus and we anticipate a deficit in much needed and projected non-pledge offering in April and maybe beyond. If possible, please consider continuing your financial support on a regular basis. - Thank you from Your Finance Committee
MESSAGE FROM DHPC ACCOUNTANT... Thank you for your financial support during these difficult times. DHPC members are encouraged to mail their pledges. The Finance team will be checking the post office box and the physical mailbox while the church office is closed. DHPC does not offer an electronic offering option. This decision was made for two reasons. First, the monthly and per transaction fee to the church would reduce the offering amount. Second, parishioners can elect on-line bill pay through their banking institution at no fee to them or the church. If you would like to set up automatic donations contact your bank. You will need to provide them DHPC's address (P.O. Box 874 Carefree, AZ 85377) your account number and your first and last name. Bobi Tomlon, Controller Desert Hills Presbyterian Church 480-488-3384
