SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021, 8:00/9:30/11:00AM

PRELUDE

Toccata in C, BWV 564 Natalie Mealey, organ

J.S. Bach

* CALL TO WORSHIP (Adapted from Psalm 118) Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:

People: Leader: People:

Rumors came with thunderous feet across the distance—Mary first, then Peter and John— to say the tomb was empty and death could not hold Him back from a world where bound aries and barriers are toppled. Out of death’s darkness, morning has broken! The frozen misery of the centuries cracks and breaks apart. Our mourning turns to dancing, the ordinary becomes holy, faith begins with the dawn. The burden of our lives is lifted, our tears change to the sounds of laughter and a great feast of hope. The weight of that stone across Christ’s tomb is moved by an unstoppable love. Seekers of Jesus, do not be afraid, He is not here, but going before you. Friends, Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

HYMN #360/367

Jesus Christ Is Risen Today/ Christ the Lord Is Risen Today

1. Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once, upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss, Alleluia!

4. Hymns of praise, then, let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save, Alleluia!

2. Lives again our glorious King. Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Dying once, he all doth save. Alleluia! Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

5. Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as His love: Alleluia! Praise Him, all ye heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Alleluia!

3. Love's redeeming work is done. Alleluia! Fought the fight, the battle won. Alleluia! Death in vain forbids Him rise. Alleluia! Christ has opened paradise. Alleluia!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, in raising Jesus from the tomb you have given us the sure sign of your power to deliver us from sin and death and to renew our whole creation. We confess that we still fall into doubt and fear. We continue to cling to selfish ways and doubt your power to make all things new. Forgive our lack of faith. Have mercy on our weakness. Raise us from the death of sin that we may live with Christ in the joy of his resurrection, now and forever. Amen. ASSURANCE Leader: All: ANTHEM

2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. The Lord Is Risen Today! Chancel Choir and Sonoran Brass

The angel greeted the women who came to the tomb in dismay. “Do not be afraid,” said the angel, “but hear the words I say: He is risen!” Alleluia! “The Lord is risen today! Go quickly and tell the good news. The Lord is risen today! The Lord is risen today!

The women ran from the graveside rejoicing in what they had heard. They proclaimed the message the angel had shared of their risen Lord! He is risen!” Alleluia! “The Lord is risen today! Go quickly and tell the good news. The Lord is risen today! The Lord is risen today! The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; The Passover of gladness, the Passover of God. From death to life eternal, from sin’s dominion gree, Our Christ has brought us over with hymns of victory. Now let the heav’ns be joyful! Let earth its song begin! The world resound in triumph, and all that is therein; Let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend; For Christ the Lord has risen, our Joy that has no end! He is risen!” Alleluia! “The Lord is risen today! Go quickly and tell the good news. The Lord is risen today! The Lord is risen today!

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE

Matthew 28:1-10

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #368

He Lives I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today; I know that He is living, whatever men may say. I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer, And just the time I need Him, He’s always near. Refrain: He lives, He lives! Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way. He lives, He lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart! In all the world around me I see His loving care; And tho’ my heart grows weary, I never will despair. I know that He is leading thro’ all the stormy blast; The day of His appearing will come at last. Refrain Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ, the King! The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find, None other is so loving, so good and kind. Refrain page 5

OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE

II Corinthians 5:1-10

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. SERMON
