Glory and Power The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.

(Psalm 19:1-6) The glory and power of God are displayed in creation every day. The sun, moon and stars proclaim it without ever uttering a single word. The mountains, the oceans, the rivers and valleys all show forth what God is capable of accomplishing with his hand. The fish, animals, birds, and plants reveal a knowledge and wisdom that is wondrous to behold. All together creation bears witness without words or speech to God’s glory and might, their very existence is a testimony that goes out into all the earth for everyone to see and hear.

Just when we think we have seen the fullness of God’s power, wisdom, and glory God does something even more amazing. God redeems us sinners and adopts us as sons and daughters. The Lord defeats the devil and begins to vanquish evil. The dead in Christ are raised to life as death has lost its sting and victory. God now has the last word and this Word is full of love, life and power.

And we, we are now witnesses to God’s great glory and power poured out in Jesus Christ. We use words and actions to demonstrate it, but our very existence is a testimony that goes out into all the earth for everyone to see and hear.

This is our testimony: God our Father has embraced us with His two hands of Word and Spirit. He has awakened us in Jesus Christ and quickened us with His Holy Spirit.

Awake! O Sinner.

Arise from the dead!

And Christ will shine on you.

(Ephesians 5:14)

SUMMER HOURS BEGIN JUNE 7 Desert Hills Presbyterian Church will begin our Summer Worship Schedule beginning Sunday, June 7 through September 27.

As in the past years, DHPC will hold two worship services during these months.

9:00 am - Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary 10:30 am - Praise Worship in the Fellowship Center Nursery care and Sunday School will be offered during both services.

MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL RECAP The Music and Arts Festival was held February 20 and 21.

It was a wonderful time of fellowship for all ages, and we learned about arm knitting, guitar, public speaking, drawing, stamped greeting cards, small bite appetizers, photography basics, quilting a pillow, and origami! Thanks to all the talented workshop leaders and the Music and Arts Committee.

DEACON’S DOINGS The Deacons have undergone a reorganization this year in an attempt to be more relevant to the congregation and to offer an opportunity to parishioners to participate in our ministry.

One of the five new organizations is the Administrative unit.

We have two Deacons in the unit, but would welcome one member from the congregation who has an interest in writing articles describing important developments, ministry opportunities and celebrations that relate to the Care Ministries in our church.

MINISTRY AT THE HERITAGE REPORT Join us as we spread joy by sharing God’s love with the residents of The Heritage.

We will now go back to meeting on the second Thursday of each month, due to changes in the schedule at The Heritage.

NEW “READER'S THEATER” MEETING SUNDAY, APRIL 12 DHPC has begun a periodic Reader’s Theater for those interested in reading and discussing theatrical scripts. At our first meeting we read three scripts, each about six minutes long.

Some were Christian-themed and some explored the human condition.

We enjoyed the varying insights of our varied participants as well as the chance to try our hand at expressive reading.

Besides enjoying the immediate experience, we also considered where we might be able to use these scripts in DHPC. We invite anyone who is ready to be an expressive reader— or just to enjoy discussing the scripts read—to join us in our Reader’s Theater. And, you can bring scripts along for us to read!

Our next meeting is Sunday, April 12 at 3:30 PM in the Fellowship Center Lounge. Contact Ron or Vicky Crowe, 623.465.7156, for more information.

Anthem Men’s Bible Study A group of men from the Anthem community have been following the leading of God and had the courage to step out of the boat last spring to start a men’s Bible study. After one year of meeting the men in this group have been blessed to have new members and neighbors participate and be encouraged by the Spirit of God at work in their lives. These men have a heart to reach their community for Christ and have intentionally been meeting and renting a room in the Anthem Civic Center on Thursday mornings from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm to accomplish this goal. They will be starting a new study on the book, "Divine Conspiracy," by Dallas Willard, with Pastor John Ortberg interviewing Willard in a video series that the men have chosen to use for the remainder of the spring. Participants do not have to read the book to participate and all men are welcome to attend. Youth Discipleship News Kevin Deasy, Youth Minister youth@deserthills.org

My wife, Priscilla, and our boys, Joey, Jonny, and Charlie have each been blessed over the past several months by hosting the Wednesday Youth Gatherings in our home. As disciples of Christ it is our desire to open our lives to the Holy Spirit and invite others to have access into our chaotic world and life. This has been somewhat counter-intuitive but has turned out to be an extreme blessing. Students and leaders have warmed our hearts and home as they have gathered for snacks, fellowship, worship, prayer, and teaching. It has been extremely encouraging to witness students interact with our children and set an example of faith and practice for them to emulate. It is our prayer and hope that students and leaders will continue to be as mutually blessed by this endeavor as we move fully into spring and the end of the school year. Youth Gatherings will continue to meet at the Deasy House through the end of school unless otherwise noted in the bulletin, weekly emails, or on this list.

When I was 8 or 9 years old, my friend, Nancy, from across the street asked if I would like to go to church with them. I excitedly ran home and asked my mom and she whispered, “No, and don’t even mention it to your dad.” You see, my father who was a very intellectual man, was also very antagonistic toward religion. So, I had no religious upbringing whatsoever.

the Bible is just a bunch of fairy tales?” (Something, my father would have said.) We argued about it a little bit and then he left for the drive home from Santa Barbara back to Orange County where we lived. On the way home he said a prayer asking God to reveal himself and his truth to me. It turns out that he had received Christ in the home of a sweet neighbor lady when he was 10 years old. This experience was not nurtured in his home, but the experience never left him.

In spite of that, I had a seeking heart and always wondered about God. In the summertime I would to YMCA camp and there we would write letters to God and do other religious type things. This was always very meaningful to me. I remember sitting on a big rock looking out at the mountains and the trees and feeling a sense of God’s presence there in nature.

During my first year of college there was this cute and perky girl in my dorm hall that kept inviting me to some kind of meeting. I kept saying “No, too busy.” But one day for some reason I decided to go even though I was studying for finals. There I was enthralled by all the happy young people singing and sharing their faith. They shared with me the 4 spiritual laws –

I went away to college at University of California at Santa Barbara and there continued to seek. I went to several groups and took a Comparative Religion class trying out each religion as we learned about them.

1. God Loves me and has a wonderful plan for my life.

2. I am sinful and separated from God. 3. Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for my sin.

4. I must receive Jesus as Savior and Lord. They asked if I would like to receive Jesus right now.

Once my boyfriend came to visit me and we went to the County Fair. We came across a booth for the Gideon Bible Society. My boyfriend began conversing with the man about the Bible like he actually knew something about it.

This really surprised me. We had never talked about the Bible. When we left the fair I said, “Don’t you know that

I said, ” Wait a minute! This is the first time I have ever heard about Jesus dying for me. I will have to go home and think about this.” And me, a sinner? How could sweet, shy Cathy be a sinner?!?

I went back to my dorm room. It just so happened that my roommate was away for the weekend and I had the place to myself. I sat down on my bed and I said, “God if you are real, please reveal yourself to me.” In that moment, I felt a wonderful presence come over me. I began to weep and cried for a long time. When I finally got up, I looked and felt like a different person. I knew I had changed and that God was real.

I sat down and wrote a letter to my boyfriend telling him about this experience. When the letter arrived he was sitting around with his buddies playing poker and smoking cigars. He read the letter and was totally amazed about what had happened to me and how God had answered his prayer.

The school year ended and I packed up and went back home for the summer. Seeing what had happened to me my boyfriend knew he would have to recommit his life to Christ. We had a wonderful summer together. We went to Christian meetings, got baptized and visited the little neighbor lady who had let him to Christ when he was ten. A year and a half later we were married, and went off to New York City where he was working at Teen Challenge, a drug rehab program. That began our 30 years of ministry together.

Since that day so many years ago Jesus has been my constant companion. I know now that he is more than just that presence in nature that I felt as a young girl, but is my very close personal friend who has been by my side through all the joys and trials. I know now that the Bible isn’t just a bunch of fairy tales, but is the living and powerful Word of God. And I know now that I really am a sinner, but that my sins have been completely forgiven and cleansed and that I have been made a new person in Jesus Christ.

Cathy and her husband George moved to Arizona in 2011 and became members of DHPC in 2013. Cathy is on the Evangelism Committee.

HOW CAN I KNOW GOD? Excerpted from How Can I Know God?

by Rev. Timothy Keller, June 1991 In order to form a personal relationship with God, you must know three things: 1) Who we are: God’s creation. God created us and built us for a relationship with him. We belong to him, and we owe him gratitude for every breath, every moment, everything. Because humans were built to live for him (to worship), we will always try to worship something – if not God, we will choose some other object of ultimate devotion to give our lives meaning.

Sinners. We have all chosen (and re-affirm daily) to reject God and to make our own joy and happiness our highest priority. We do not want to worship God and surrender our self as master, yet we are built to worship, so we cling to idols, centering our lives on things that promise to give us meaning: success, relationships, influence, love, comfort, and so on.

In spiritual bondage. To live for anything else but God leads to breakdown and decay. When a fish leaves the water, which he was built for, he is not free, but dead.

Worshiping other things besides God leads to a loss of meaning. If we achieve these things, they cannot deliver satisfaction, because they were never meant to be “gods.”

They were never meant to replace God. Worshiping other things besides God also leads to self-image problems. We end up defining ourselves in terms of our achievement in these things. We must have them or all is lost; so they drive us to work too hard, or they fill us with terror if they are jeopardized.

2) Who God is: Love and justice. His active concern is for our joy and well-being. Most people love those who love them, yet God loves and seeks the good even of people who are his enemies. But because God is good and loving, he cannot tolerate evil. The opposite of love is not anger, but indifference. “The more you love your son, the more you hate in him the liar, the drunkard, the traitor,” (E. Gifford). To imagine God’s situation, imagine a judge who also is a father, who sits at the trial of his guilty son. A judge knows he cannot let his son go, for without justice no society can survive.

How much less can a loving God merely ignore or suspend justice for us—who are loved, yet guilty of rebellion against his loving authority?

Jesus Christ. Jesus is God himself come to Earth. He first lived a perfect life, loving God with all his heart, soul, and mind, fulfilling all human obligation to God. He lived the life you owed—a perfect record. Then, instead of receiving his deserved reward (eternal life), Jesus gave his life as a sacrifice for our sins, taking the punishment and death each of us owed. When we believe in him: 1) our sins are paid for by his death, and 2) his perfect life record is transferred to our account. So God accepts and regards us as if we have done all Christ has done.

3) What you must do: Repent. There first must be an admission that you have been living as your own master, worshipping the wrong things, violating God’s loving laws. “Repentance” means you ask forgiveness and turn from that stance with a willingness to live for and center on him.

Believe. Faith is transferring your trust from your own efforts to the efforts of Christ. You were relying on other things to make you acceptable, but now you consciously begin relying on what Jesus did for your acceptance with God. All you need is nothing. If you think, “God owes me something for all my efforts,” you are still on the outside.

Pray after this fashion: “I see I am more flawed and sinful than I ever dared believe, but that I am even more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I turn from my old life of living for myself. I have nothing in my record to merit your approval, but I now rest in what Jesus did and ask to be accepted into God’s family for his sake.” When you make this transaction, two things happen at once: 1) your accounts are cleared, your sins are wiped out permanently, you are adopted legally into God’s family and 2) the Holy Spirit enters your heart and begins to change you into the character of Jesus.

Follow through. Tell a Christian friend about your commitment. Get yourself training in the basic Christian disciplines of prayer, worship, Bible study, and fellowship with other Christians. © 1991, Timothy Keller

Stephen Ministry All For God’s Glory It’s not about us. It’s all for Him. The ultimate goal of the universe is to bring glory to God. It is the reason for everything that exists, including us. God made all for His glory.

What is the glory of God? It is who He is. God’s glory is the expression of His goodness and all His intrinsic, eternal qualities. Everything created by God reflects His glory in some way. We see it everywhere.

How can we bring glory to God? Jesus honored God by fulfilling God’s purpose on earth.

We honor God the same way. When anything in creation fulfills its purpose, it brings glory to God. God made you to be you. God made each of us as a unique individual; no one else is like you. We were born for His purpose. We did not create ourselves so there is no way we can tell ourselves what we were created for. We must begin with God, our Creator.

God made us so He could love us. “God is Love.” Love is the essence of God. God didn’t need to create us but He wanted to make us in order to express His love. When we make God our reference point in our lives, we discover the meaning and purpose f our lives.

EASTER & SPRING: A TIME OF RENEWAL Springtime and Easter are here. It is time to think about renewal. Jesus was sacrificed on the cross for our salvation.

John 3:16 tells us the wonderful news: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Each Easter time we are reminded “Jesus is Risen.” Each day, month, year we are given the opportunity to “begin anew” with whatever is needed to help us be healthier, happier, and more holy in our lives.

1 Peter 1:15-16 says “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

1 Corinthians 6:19 tells us, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. It is our duty and responsibility as Christians to take good care of our bodies.”

We are physical, mental, emotional and spiritual beings and each aspect of our lives needs tender loving care and support.

How can we help strive to improve all dimensions of our good health? The Church Health Reader, a magazine published by the Church Health Center which is the official organization for Faith Community Nurses, gives us advice regarding improving all aspects of our “interconnectedness” of Life as follows: 1. Faith Life - Building a relationship with God, your neighbors and yourself.

2. Movement - Discovering ways to enjoy physical activity.

3. Medical - Partnering with your health care provider to manage your medical care.

4. Work - Appreciating your skills, talents and gifts given to you by God. 5. Emotional - Managing stress and understanding your feelings to better care for yourself.

7. Friends & Family - Giving and receiving support through relationships.

One simple way to improve our health is to practice deep abdominal or diaphragmatic breathing. Several times a day consciously breathe slowly and deeply in through your nostrils, hold it a few seconds then breathe out slowly and completely. Repeat this several times.

Your nostrils help to filter and humidify the air that surrounds us, preparing it for our lungs. This is where the air that comes into our body is purified to help sustain and maintain life. The only completely pure air in existence is Ruah, which is the Hebrew word for Spirit, and means air, wind or breath. In John 20:22 it says “And with that He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’.”

While you are practicing deep breathing it is a wonderful time to focus on connecting with our Lord and aligning our mind, body and soul to His Spirit within us as well as bringing more life sustaining oxygen into our bodies to nourish every cell physically and spiritually. This brings us better health and vitality while lowering our blood pressure and pulse and releasing stress.

Thursday afternoons from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM I facilitate a class in our Fellowship Center that is called “Prayer in Motion” or, "The Art of Moving Prayer” or “Sign Chi Do”. It is a stress management relaxation program designed by a Phoenix area medical physician, Dr. Anne Borik.

Based on brain function, it integrates sign language gesture with breathing, gentle movement and music with words from Scripture and prayers. It is intended for people of all ages and can be practiced anywhere with no special equipment.

It is suggested that first time attendees come at 1:30 PM for orientation. Watch the back of the church bulletin for any needed time changes or cancellations.

REMEMBERING THE PAST, EMBRACING THE FUTURE: GRAHAM BENHAM Graham Benham and his family have been attending Desert Hills Presbyterian Church since 2005.

Graham was just five years old when they first came to the church. He just turned 16 years old and is in the 10th grade at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy.

Graham, how did your family come to the church?

My parents decided that they wanted to learn about Christianity. We traveled around to a bunch of churches throughout the valley trying to choose the right one. When we came here, Pastor Noble caught our attention and we decided to stay. My parents still had a lot of questions and didn’t know who Jesus really was. Finally, after attending New Members Class and talking with Pastor Noble they accepted Christ and became members in 2006.

What are some of your memories of coming to church here?

My earliest memories are of attending Sunday school. I still see some of the people who were in my early Sunday school classes and we even did our Confirmation Class together.

I like being in Youth Group. We play games and then delve into specific stories, scriptures or chapters of the Bible. I liked going to Confirmation Class where we discussed things like the Apostles’ Creed and the Lord’s Prayer.

I became a member of the church after completing Confirmation Class in May of 2013. For the last few years I have helped to teach the 7th grade Confirmation Class.

Have you been on any mission trips?

Yes, I went to Jamaica with my father and brother in 2013.

That was a whole new experience for me to see other people who really testify to Jesus. We walked around knocking on people’s doors inviting them to services. We sang, had testimonies and their Pastor preached. All the people were willing to come to a service even if they didn’t believe. All the joy was new for me. Here we just sing, but there they were singing, dancing, shouting - whatever we were doing, they would just break out singing. It was so nice to see their joy. It was a lot of fun

How has attending DHPC influenced your family?

We try to go every Sunday. Even if we don’t feel like it or a couple of us are sick the rest of the family tries to go. We also pray right before we bless dinner.

We’ve been involved in several Covenant Groups with a bunch of different families - some at our house and some at other people’s homes. That’s been a lot of fun. The kids didn’t participate so much and we would just go out and play, but, recently they have included us more. We even did a Covenant Group with just our family, just the six of us Benham’s. That was pretty fun - just going over a verse and thinking about it. Our life would be drastically different if we didn’t have this faith and go to this church. It’s influenced a lot of our life.

What has coming here to church meant to you personally?

Going to church wasn’t my favorite thing back then because I had to dress up and I didn’t like dressing up. I didn’t open my mind to learning about God in the beginning so maybe that’s why I didn’t really appreciate it as much. I just remember having to sit in service when I was too old for Sunday school and right before going into Youth and I didn’t really like it much. But now I really like going to church. Now I think of it as a fun thing to do on Sundays. I like sitting there listening to Pastor Noble. He tells jokes once in a while and I like that. I like the way he phrases things and how he analyzes a verse. It makes me think and gives me new insights.

My life has had some ups and downs. Sometimes I feel I’m going up and I think “Oh, I’m good now so I don’t need Jesus.”

Then, when it feels like things are going down, I think, “Oh I really need Him now.” Whenever there’s a down time I realize that is when I really need to renew my faith in Jesus. I know God knows everything, but sometimes it’s good to talk to God and reveal stuff to him. It is good to bring things into the light and get the weight off your shoulders.

Recently, for Lent, my parents told me not just to think about what I am going to give up, but to think about what I am going to do instead, so I’m trying to read the Bible every day, just opening to a random page, letting God guide me. I’m hoping this is going to change me a little bit more.

Sometimes I do ask him for things, but it’s more about thanking Him. I like it, especially in the mornings when we drive to school and watch the sunrise. We live out in the middle of nowhere so we get to see a lot of his creation desert and mountains. I thank Him for that and when I pray, I have a happy feeling and that’s nice.

Church is a really nice place to go on Sundays and those services throughout the year like Ash Wednesday and Christmas Eve are nice as well. Coming to church is something that renews my faith every week.
