All Creatures of Our God and King

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, The holy catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of our lives, you search us and know us. We have refused to take up your cross, to bear the burdens that are ours to carry. We have not given up our attachments to possessions or to self. We have not counted the cost of walking into an unknown future with you. Forgive us, O God, that we may walk with you once more. Help us turn away from evil and reshape us into vessels of Christ’s love and service in whose name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader: It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM

There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy Summer Choir

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior; There is healing in His blood.

There is no place where earth’s sorrows Are more felt than up in Heaven; There is no place where earth’s failings Have such kindly judgment given. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head.

arr. Mark Schweizer For the love of God is broader Than the measure of our mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more faithful, We should take Him at His word; And our lives would be thanksgiving For the goodness of the Lord.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE Philemon 1-7 1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker— 2 also to Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier—and to the church that meets in your home: 3

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. 6 I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. 7 Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people. 4

Leader: All:

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY

When the Saints Go Marching In Men’s Quartet: Jeffrey Anthony, Richard Cook, John Thurston, Eddie Smith Barbara Cochran, piano

Traditional

We are trav’ling in the footsteps Of those who have gone before. And we’ll all be reunited, On that new and gleaming shore.

Well, up there I’ll see my Savior Who redeemed my soul from sin; With hands outreached He’ll greet me When the saints go marching in.

O when the saints go marching in, O when the saints go marching in, Lord, I want to be in that number, When the saints go marching in.

O when the saints go marching in, O when the saints go marching in, Lord, I want to be in that number, When the saints go marching in.

*DOXOLOGY #815

OLD HUNDREDTH

SCRIPTURE Philemon 8-25 8 Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, 9yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus— 10that I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. 11 Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me. I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you. 13I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. 14But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced but would be voluntary. 15Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever— 16no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord. 12

So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. 18If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. 19I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self. 20I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. 21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask. 17

22

And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me,because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers.

Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. 24And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers. 23

25

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY The Lord said that though adversity is part of earthly life, He has overcome the world (John 16:33). Any time God allows trials in our life, He has a purpose for them. No matter where affliction originates, by the time it reaches us, it’s been shaped according to the Father’s good purposes. God is teaching us something that will help us succeed later. The question is: Will we cooperate with Him or resist? When we experience trials or trouble, it becomes an opportunity for growth. Are you struggling with some adversity in your life? Do you need a Christian ear to help you recognize the opportunity the Lord has placed in front of you? We are here to listen and encourage; give us a call.
