ORDER OF WORSHIP Good Friday 7:00pm, April 2, 2021

*CALL TO WORSHIP (Is 55:12, Lk 19:40, Rom 1:16, Acts 22:15, 2 Cor 5:17, Matt 5:16) Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: All:

Isaiah prophesied, "the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands." Hills rejoice and trees applaud our God. Jesus said, "I tell you, if these disciples were silent, the stones would shout out." Even stones trumpet God's praise. The Apostle Paul said, "I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith." We are not ashamed of the gospel, nor are we ashamed of our faith. Will you be then a witness for our Lord – telling all of “what you have seen and heard”? I will go and tell and shine my light before others that they may glorify Him. I will be a witness for my Lord!

SCRIPTURE READING

Mark 15:20-47

Rev. Jim Noble

And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews. They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down from the cross and save yourself!” In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid. HOMILY CHOIR CANTATA

Watched from a Distance Witness DHPC Chancel Choir and Orchestra

Rev. Jim Noble Lloyd Larson

The choir and orchestra present “Witness” as an act of worship. It would be our greatest honor for you to show your appreciation by silently meditating on the message at the conclusion of the cantata. Witness Who will be a witness? Who will be a witness? Will you be a witness for my Lord? The God of life came down to live among us, And we have seen the power of love revealed. Foretold by prophets that He’d dwell among us; Now by His grace our pardon has been sealed. The Son of God came down to live among us. The blind were made to see, He healed the lame. He said that we could live a life victorious. Sing, “Hallelujah! Praise His holy name!”

In Christ we bear witness to God’s holy plan: God’s Son, made flesh for all to see. By faith we can touch the nail prints in His hands, And by His grace our spirits are set free. Who will be a witness? Who will be a witness? Will you be a witness for my Lord? The Lamb of God was pierced for our transgressions, A Man of sorrow and of suffering; His punishment, the price for our salvation; Messiah, Lord of lords, and King of kings!

Who will be a witness? Who will be a witness? Will you be a witness for my Lord? page 4

Bread of Heaven

Bread of Heaven, feed my hung’ring spirit. Living Water quench my thirsting soul. Eternal Light, come illumine now my pathway. Great Physician, make me whole.

The skeptics ask, “Is this the son of Joseph? How can He claim to be God’s holy Son? He says that He’s the ‘Living Bread of Heaven.’ Give witness to this claim, O Chosen One!”

The skeptics ask, “What is the ‘Bread from Heaven?’ Show us a sign so we can know the truth. As God sent manna to the earth from heaven, Show us a sign, and we will follow You.”

Bread of Heaven, feed my hung’ring spirit. Living Water quench my thirsting soul. Eternal Light, come illumine now my pathway. Great Physician, make me whole. Bread of heaven, come and make me whole.

Bread of Heaven, feed my hung’ring spirit. Living Water quench my thirsting soul. Eternal Light, come illumine now my pathway. Great Physician, make me whole. Blessed Is the King! Hosanna! Blessed is the King who comes! Hosanna, hosanna! Lift your voice and sing, “Hosanna, hosanna!” Gory to the King who comes! Hosanna! “Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing, For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven, our King. O may we ever praise Him with heart and life and voice, And in His blissful presence eternally rejoice! Blessed is the King who comes... Are You the Christ? Are You the Christ people claim You to be? Are You the One who makes the blind to see? Are You the Christ? Are You God’s holy Son? “King of the Jews,” are You the “Chosen One?” Are You the Christ that the people acclaim? Are You the One they say heals the lame? From Galilee, You’re that carpenter’s Son! We don’t believe You’re the “Chosen One.”

Are you the Christ? Are You the Christ? Are You the Christ who turns water to wine And raises the dead? Come, show us a sign! Walk on the water, let’s see how it’s done! Now save Yourself, Jesus Christ, if You’re the One!

Jesus stood silent as insults were hurled, Rejected by His own. Here stood the Christ, God’s own gift to the world, Condemned and all alone.

Surely This Was God’s Son!

Surely this was the Son of God, Blameless, the holy Lamb of God. He bears my blame On the Cross of shame. Surely this was God’s Son!

Surely this was the Son of God, Blameless, the holy Lamb of God. He bears my blame On the Cross of shame. Surely this was God’s Son!

Worthy! Messiah, sent from God, Redeemer, eternal love of God, He dies for me. How can it be? Surely this was God’s Son!

I watch Him die, Christ the crucified, “It is finished,” I hear Him say. I bow before The Sovereign Lord For a debt I can ne’er repay.

Reviled and scorned And with crown of thorns Hangs the Teacher from Galilee. With labored breath, In painful death, He endures the cruel tree. The congregation is invited to join in singing:

•

Choir: He dies for me. How can it be? Surely this was God’s Son! You may remain in the sanctuary as long as you wish. Please depart in silence.
