Dare to New “If anyone is in Christ Jesus, they are a new creation, the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” (II Cor. 5:17) I hope our “Dare to be New” campaign enabled you to stay rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ during these unusual times. I also pray that you found yourselves growing in Christ and letting your light shine before others in the darkness. While we bring our “Dare to be New” campaign to a close, it does not mean an end to our allowing the Holy Spirit to continue the good work which God has begun in us in the name of Jesus Christ.

As a congregation we will keep ourselves abiding in the Christ through our prayer ministry, bible studies, and fellowship. As a result, I cannot thank all of you enough who lead us in these ministries, and thank all of you who through your participation have helped to keep us all grounded in Christ. How we are able to continue to be people of faith, hope, and love will be a witness to the world as to what is possible when we abide in the Lord and not in the things of the world.

As a congregation we will continue to seek, see, and labor with and for the Lord of the harvest.

The harvest is indeed plentiful! COVID, drought, fires, earthquakes, and social unrest have caused many people to reassess the purpose and meaning of their lives, question what is truly important, and wonder about an afterlife. For a time such as this God has sent us.

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’”

(Rom. 10:14-15) If you find yourself needing encouragement or help in staying grounded in Christ Jesus, please reach out to us. Your pastors, staff, and elders are all here to come along side you. In addition, you are blessed with a great many brothers and sisters in Christ who, like you, know what it is like constantly be striving to stay abiding in the Lord, keeping one’s heart full of faith, hope, and love.

Together we are new in Christ Jesus.

The Church Who Surprises There is often a huge misconception among churches that being called a “friendly” (or “nice”) church is to be commended and something members can proudly wear on their sleeves as they brag to their guests. Here’s the problem, however. Many if not most churches think of themselves as friendly. And, to some degree they are right. Certainly, being a “friendly” church is a good thing. But is it enough? More importantly, as we minister in a confused, hurting, and divided world, does it truly reflect who we wish to be at Desert Hills? Does it show our community and world that all people are important to God and are therefore important to us? Perhaps the bigger question for us to ask then is, “Are we a hospitable church?” This is a question your Outreach Committee has been contemplating for some time and it is an important one for us all to consider as a church. Why? Because each of us is called to practice hospitality.

And who is the “stranger?” It is each person who comes on our campus regardless of what brought them there. It is the community that surrounds us regardless of whether they have heard of Desert Hills, believe in our God and our message, or even wish to know more about these.

There’s a big difference between being friendly and hospitable. Consequently, part of the issue in discerning the difference is recognizing that being “nice to one another” is not what God had in mind when it pertains to our level of investment in others and especially our guests. Hospitality is deep, meaningful engagement. It is investment in the lives of others – even those we are meeting for the very first time. Because the hospitable church knows you not as a visitor, but family and that extending hospitality is one of the best ways we as God’s Church can give someone a taste of His Kingdom.

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

Bottom Line? Being called a “friendly” church may not be as much a compliment as it may seem. Please pray for our Outreach Committee as we continue to investigate ways we can create a true culture of Christian hospitality here. Is this something that interests you?

“MOSQUITOS” Mary Kay Thurston, R.N. With the recent monsoon activity, the standing water everywhere provides an excellent breeding ground for MOSQUITOES! There are many things we can do to minimize the risk of getting bit by the lil’ darlins’.

Almost everyone has had the unpleasant experience of being bitten by a mosquito. Mosquito bites can cause skin irritation through an allergic reaction.

Not only a nuisance, mosquitoes can pose a serious health threat to people. Disease can be spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Over 40 species of mosquitoes live in Arizona, over 150 species in the United States. Mosquitoes can bite day and night.

Adult mosquitoes live for about 2 to 4 weeks depending on the species, humidity, temperature, and other factors. Female mosquitoes are the only ones that bite and often live longer than male mosquitoes.

What are Mosquites? According to Wikipedia, Mosquitoes are members of a group of about 3,500 species of small flies within the family Culicidae (from the Latin culex meaning "gnat"). The word "mosquito" (formed

by mosca and diminutive -ito) is Spanish for “little fly.” Mosquitoes have a slender segmented body, one pair of wings, one pair of halteres, three pairs of long hair-like legs, and elongated mouthparts. The mosquito life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Eggs are laid on the water surface; they hatch into motile larvae that feed on aquatic algae and organic material. The mosquito's saliva is transferred to the host during the bite, and can cause an itchy rash. In addition, many species can ingest pathogens while biting, and transmit them to future hosts. In this way, mosquitoes are important vectors of parasitic diseases such as malaria and filariasis, and arboviral diseases such as yellow fever, Chikungunya, West Nile, dengue fever, and Zika.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes can bite any time of day or night, so you need to take precautions at all times against West Nile and other diseases mosquitoes spread. To protect yourself and your family, be sure to wear insect repellent outdoors and make sure your screens are intact. It also helps to dress young children in lightweight long-sleeve shirts and long pants if they are going to be outside.

ASU Jazz Trio Mark your calendar to attend this much anticipated concert starring Pianist, Composer and ASU Director of Jazz Studies, Michael Kocour, and his talented compadres, Ben Hedquist and Dom Moio, as they perform original compositions, as well as jazz classics. This talented jazz trio will delight the audience with an afternoon of up-beat and rich melodies leaving us wanting more of their jazzy sounds in the future. Michael Kocour serves as Director of Jazz Studies in the School of Music at ASU. Kocour has appeared at venues around the world and has been a guest on Marian McParland’s internationally syndicated NPR program “Piano Jazz.”

His recorded work as a studio musician includes soundtracks to two major motion pictures and numerous television commercials, as well as seven critically acclaimed CDs. Bassist and Educator, Ben Hedquist, hails from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and holds a master’s and doctorate in double bass performance from ASU, where he studied under double bass virtuoso Catalin Rotaru. Percussionist and Author, Dom Moio, started playing drums in the fifth grade. Now in his 20th year at ASU’s jazz faculty, he keeps a very busy teaching and gigging schedule, having recorded more than 65 jazz CDs. As an author of Latin Percussion for Gringo’s, Moio collaborated with his long time hero Steve Gadd on two book projects, Deep Grooves II and Just Duet, which also includes jazz great Joe LaBarbera. The masters will hold a one hour Workshop at 2:30 PM. They’ll talk about their performance experiences, jazz influences and career paths.

Valley Chamber Chorale— “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” Celebrate the 2021 Yuletide Season by joining the Valley Chamber Chorale for a presentation of festival music. 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the first “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” held at King’s College, Cambridge, England on Christmas Eve, 1918. Their program, modeled on the annual event held in the chapel at King’s College, includes choral selections, Advent and Christmas readings, and favorite carols. The Valley Chamber Chorale, led by conductor Dr. Christopher Samuel, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enlightening the community and enriching its culture. The Chorale offers entertaining and educational concerts at a variety of venues throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area.

by Darla Gilchrist, Elder for Music & Arts Ariel Artiga is a junior at Arizona Christian University and our intern for a second year. She is majoring in Biblical Studies and Communications. This school year she will assist the Production Team in entering the lower thirds in ProPresenter that is used in our livestream, and she will assist Chris Haidet in the youth program on Sunday mornings and teach a Bible study on Sunday afternoons. Ariel is a gifted young Christian woman and a family oriented individual. We are so fortunate to have her excited about participating in our many DHPC activities. In addition, Ariel is well trained at operating our cameras in the Sanctuary and can fill in when needed. In her free time, Ariel enjoys exploring new places with friends, watching sports games, playing softball and her Bible studies and worship nights.

When not attending ACU, she resides in Temecula, California, with her father, mother and siblings.

Katelyn Noble currently operates our three cameras during our Sunday worship services. As a recent volunteer, Katelyn has eagerly learned our production activities and has shown up each Sunday with a smile on her face. This young junior at North Valley Christian Academy has been trained by our Production Leader and is enjoying our crazy flexible learning process. At school, Katelyn is involved in soccer, basketball and will join softball. Away from her studies and school activities, she enjoys music, playing video games and watching TV. I marvel each Sunday as Katelyn independently maneuvers the many aspects of making us all look good on the livestream, including her father. She has the ultimate power over him! Please thank her for her volunteer heart.

Slater Hunter handles all things audio. He is a graduate of the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS) and is obtaining his required hours of experience. You have to love that smile! Slater is responsible for how everything sounds, in-house as well as on the livestream. Be assured that this is not an easy task. The piano, organ and choir are not currently wired through the sound system, which makes the mixing of these sounds on a regular basis a difficult task. He is learning more each Sunday and we are blessed to have him. Slater has a full time job elsewhere and works for us on Sunday mornings.

What can I say about Devyn Dennis? She is a true joy to work with. Devyn has been involved in all aspects of the audio visual world for the past seven years. She is a master at solving problems. She learns on the fly and is totally reliable as our Production Leader. Devyn believes it’s a very rewarding experience to be a part of and see production come together – big or small – and with the ever-changing concepts of technology and the need to stay relevant, there is always something new to learn. She works part-time two or three days per week. She trains the Audio Visual Livestream technicians, and is responsible for all that occurs on Sunday mornings, as well as activities throughout the church during the week. In her spare time, Devyn enjoys gardening, cooking (especially sushi), drawing and live streaming.

She’s learning Japanese for a future trip and spends time with her dog Eevee.

We are so fortunate to have two talented congregational volunteers that run ProPresenter during the livestream to relieve Kathleen to other important tasks. Thank you so much to Tracy Garrity and Liz Cottrell. We appreciate you giving up your worship time to keep things going for us. We are better for their contributions.

October 16 –17, 2021 Our Navajo sister church from Leupp, Arizona, will be making its annual trek south to visit us for a weekend! They will be working side-by-side with us on various ministries and outreach activities for folks in our local community.

GUEST SPEAKER WINNIE FRITZ “Lessons And Gifts As A Peacetime And Combat Veteran” This year’s speaker is Winnie Fritz, a popular speaker from the Veterans Heritage Project Speaker Series. During her tenure as a nurse in the U.S. Army, Winnie earned her pilot’s wings and held leadership positions in the U.S., Thailand, and Vietnam where her commendations included the Bronze Star. She has held positions as a CEO, Chief Clinical Officer and Chief Nursing Officer in a variety of U.S. and international hospitals and healthcare organizations including for-profit and not-for-profit care providers in 22 countries. For her success in strategic and financial planning; in facilities design; and in improved clinical performance in Jordan’s hospitals, she was awarded His Majesty’s Medal of Honor. Today, she is Senior Vice President of Clinical Services and Operations, HCCA Management Co. “Who Are We and What Do We Do?”

by Pat Nichols, Service Ministry Deacon WHO: As scripture tell us, God calls us to serve Him in many different ways. This year DHPC is blessed with 12 willing and eager servants plus our two very special congregational nurses, Mary Kay Thurston and Cyndi Moulton including our Shephard’s leader, Bev Shannon.

Barbara Conti is our Deacon Elder, liaison to session regarding our work. Laurann Cook and Jim Shields serve as the Administration Ministry Deacons, Nancy Clark, Deb McDermott and Kurt Koch are our Care Ministry Deacons, Su Fong, Amy Woods and Rolene Dinsdale are in charge of the Equipping Ministry and Dave Zoetewey, Min Damm and Pat Nichols are leading the Service Ministry.

WHAT: The Care Ministry Deacons are responsible for providing organization and oversight to specialized care ministries within our congregation and community. This includes Walking Beside Ministries, Parish Shepherds, Grief Support group and visitations by pastors, congregational nurses and deacons.

The Service Ministry Deacons are responsible for addressing physical care needs such as meals, transportation, minor household repairs, landscaping and Memorial receptions.

The Equipping Ministry Deacons work with Session committee to define and develop education, training and activities to help members become more conformed to the image of Jesus Christ for the glory of God and the sake of others.

This may include development of healthy spiritual disciplines, prayer practices, the identification of spiritual gifts, etc.

The Administration Ministry Deacons are responsible for managing organization functions including managing finances, providing minutes and communications to Session, member retention and the assimilation of new members into the life of the church.

to our Parish Shepherds The past year spent in a worldwide pandemic and in isolation, provided many with the opportunity to reflect upon what is truly important in life. Consequently, I believe many of us have concluded that it is our relationships – that is, the people in our lives - we cherish most. Some of us even went so far as to reprioritize things in our lives – our jobs, social activities, church gatherings, time commitments, etc. for the sake of ensuring we were effectively nurturing meaningful relationships.

In good times and bad, the church is no different, for the family of God is relational by design and we truly need one another. We need the church; And as Christ’s sheep, we need to be tended to and nurtured. This is why Jesus as the Good Shepherd calls under-shepherds to care for his flock. At DHPC, many of you know we have assigned gifted, compassionate, and called Parish Shepherds to care for members and regular attendees. And can I gratefully share, as life came to a screeching halt during the pandemic, these dear people worked harder than ever. They reached out through phone calls, texts, emails, and cards. They remembered our birthdays and anniversaries even when we could not go out to celebrate. They visited. They faithfully prayed for all those in their assigned flock often reaching out to secure prayer requests from us. In short, they faithfully served our congregation as the hands, feet, and voice of Christ and they fleshed out for us what it means to love our neighbors.

Well, much has been rightfully said

about the unceasing efforts and sacrifices of healthcare workers, first responders, and even pastors and church leaders over the past year. But might I suggest it was our shepherds who tirelessly went the extra mile to minister in some very trying times as well. Furthermore, very little has changed since then. Our parish shepherds are still quietly working behind the scenes to ensure that no one falls through the cracks in the DHPC family. And so, if you have not already done so, I would encourage you to reach out to your parish shepherd with a word of thanks. Sure, commendations like these from their flock are not why they signed on to do what they do, but it never hurts to thanks those in our lives who have served us as Jesus “with skin on.” And let us remember to thank our faithful God as well who not only gave our shepherds an example to follow in Christ, but the giftedness to serve us with excellence all for His glory!

Christian caregiving dates back to Christ’s time (Acts, chapter 6) when the apostles chose seven disciples to oversee the distribution of food to widows.

Our Christian caregiving team is composed of DHPC members who walk alongside others during difficult periods in life, thus demonstrating the Love of Christ. We respond in confidentiality to the needs of our congregation and the community.

Hello, my name is Ollie, and I reside in the Clubhouse at DHPC. You may remember my keeping you up to date on the happenings in the Clubhouse (nursery- age 5) and Studio 15 (Grades 1 – 6). Since I last contacted you there have been some to be kiddos who have learned a lot about Jesus and how much He . They will loves them. The music is infectious and the stories are helping teach our little disciples what Jesus would do in various situations.

Miss Sharon and Miss Bonnie are preparing fun activities and games for the children to expand on the story of the day. In Seplearn to take the initiative to do tember the Clubhouse bunch will the right thing, the good deed, be in the ! The etc. A good lesson for life will teach them to stay focused, and children will share about their to always look for ways to celebrate God!!! They are beginning to memorize the Word of God, take it into their hearts, and apply it to their daily lives.

by Chris Haidet, Director of Family & Student Ministries Summer 2021 is in the books and we are excited to get things launched for the Fall. We were able to take 10 to Forest Home

All in all, it was a fun summer.

Fall 2021 The Hangout midweek is finally here. After much delay will be launching our Wednesday night outreach program for 6th-12th grade students. This will be a high energy, high volume, and high impact night that will give our students opportunities to reach out and invite their friends to a fun environment where their friends will hear the truth of God’s love. I am so excited for Summer Camp and we all had a this program and hope anyone tremendous time. We are looking who reads this will invite any forward to making Forest Home student they know to this midSummer Camp an annual event week program. as well as attending their Winter We are excited to be kicking off and Leadership retreats next two new series in the Fall. On year. Throughout the summer Sunday nights we will be asking we met Sunday evenings in Studio 15 and the 80’s Café. We covered many topics and enjoyed and welcomed new students. We especially enjoyed a new event

called Cooking with Teens where our students got to cook and taste a Mexican appetizer.

Our small group program is in full gear as our students dig into God’s word in a smaller more intimate setting. This is a great time for our students to interact with our leaders and discover God’s amazing plan for their lives. Our small groups meet on Sunday afternoons at 2:30 right before our Sunday evening program.

I want to thank all the church members, staff, and parents who have supported this ministry.

You have been such a blessing to me, but more so to our students.

Student ministry is such an important aspect of a young Christian’s spiritual journey and I truly am blessed with the parents who have trusted us to walk alongside their students. Hey everyone! I just wanted to give a quick update on the outreach in Egypt.

We’ve now been here 3 weeks and it’s been amazing to see God moving in that short time. Our main ministry has been working with Sudanese refugees in a workshop every night from Monday-Thursday and it’s been so powerful. I’m on the kid’s team, which has definitely put me out of my comfort zone, but in a special way. I never thought that I would be one to be leading a kid’s ministry, but that’s exactly what God had planned for me at this time.

I’ve grown so much and have made such a powerful connection with the kids.

The smile they have when they see me has been so rewarding, and I’ve been able to have great engagement with my teachings with the children as well. I’ve also had the opportunity to evangelize with the Muslim

people as well. It’s safe to say my worldview has changed for the better, It’s so clear to see God’s heart for the Islamic world. I’ve been in two Syrian Muslim homes and they are some of the nicest most hospitable people I’ve ever met in my life. They were so excited to welcome us into their home, give us coffee, and we had amazing and powerful conversations. You could tell God was really moving in those homes. I have also had the opportunity to do some Park ministry and it was just as impactful. We met a group of Muslim women, in full burqas, only their eyes visible. But that didn’t create any barrier in the joy we had we them.

They were laughing and giving us cake and 7up the whole time, it was amazing to see how they treated complete strangers who they knew were Christians after just a couple of minutes. In that same park, one of our team members prayed in Jesus’ name for healing on the back of one of the women, and at that moment she

felt warmth on her back like something had left her.

That’s just a small portion of the incredible testimony of my time in Egypt and I still have one week left before I head to Switzerland! I would love to invite you all to pray for the Sudanese, Syrian, and Egyptian people, and that the seeds we planted and the encounters we had would bear fruit.

Pray for the Muslims that I and my friends had the pleasure to talk to, that they would continue searching for Jesus, that those conversations we had with them felt different for a reason, that there is HOPE in Jesus and him alone. Thank you all for your continued support and for keeping me in your prayers, it means so much. I will give another update soon!

Packing From children to seniors, people pack shoebox gifts each year to bless children in need around the world. Parents often use the project to teach their kids about giving. Yearround volunteers support these efforts across the country.

The leaders learn how to host child -friendly outreach events, and how to implement The Greatest Journey follow-up discipleship program.

Outreach Events Pastors around the world host outreach events in places where people may not know Christ and invite them to follow Him. Other churches use the boxes as resources for outreach in orphanages and other at-risk areas. In many places, they also offer The Greatest Gift, a Gospel story booklet Samaritan’s Purse developed for shoebox recipients. After

hearing the Gospel Story, and how God loves them, children are surprised with a Shoebox filled with gifts from a stranger from across the globe, a Christian, who is providing a tangible example of God’s love.

Discipleship & Multiplication As a result of what they learn in The Greatest Journey, boys and girls grow in Christ and share with friends and family.

The students also invite others to their graduations where the Gospel is shared. This often brings parents, siblings, and friends to accept Christ and become active members in the local church. Families are reached, churches grow, new churches are started, and communities are transformed.

Financial Peace University Classes to be Offered at DHPC Starting Sunday, September 26, 2021 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm for NINE weeks. The cost is $129 for access to the material for one year.
