Letter from Session Dear Brothers and Sisters, As we close the 2021 year, we do so with joy and gratitude in our hearts! We are blessed to be a part of what God is doing at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, a congregation with a heart for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and a heart for our community.

“Dare to be New” was the motto for 2021, a definite challenge during a pandemic! However, as you will discover in the pages of the annual report that follows, a quick look back on DHPC’s ministry happenings in 2021 reveals the incredible faithfulness of our God who led us, equipped us, and empowered us, not to mention gave us much to CELEBRATE! Here are a few ways we are celebrating God’s faithfulness: Family and student ministries are making a joyful noise: Our Children’s Ministry kicked off a new curriculum, “Orange,” in February complete with two beautiful and inviting gathering spaces - The Clubhouse and Studio 15 for ages birth through age 3 and age 4 through sixth grade, respectively. An online companion curriculum piece was also implemented for students to enjoy at home with their parents. Children’s Ministry also initiated Parents’ Night Out, hosted a Fall Faith Festival “bouncy house” and Crafts, and presented the First Annual Jingle Jam, complete with singing, games, drama, and the first ever recorded “snowfall” on our new stage! Our Youth Ministry (The Hangout) experienced similar excitement in 2021 with new and inviting gathering spaces leading to a growing youth group and more activity at the church and in the community! Through the generosity of the church, students participated in the first summer camp experience in quite some time at Forest Home (CA) and fundraised for winter camp in January 2022. Family and Student ministries hired collegeage interns to serve in the children and youth ministries.

The boulders are alive with the sound of music: To the delight of our congregation and local community, our Music and Arts committee was able to reinstate the concert series which has seen not only larger crowds as the year progressed, but also a tremendous upswing in financial support from our congregation and community alike!

DHPC is now home to The Fountain Hills Saxophone Quartet (featuring DHPC Music Director Jeffrey Anthony) who serve as our “artists in residence” and provided a tremendous church “community outreach” effort by performing 64 concerts in 2021!

The donuts are “tipping the scales” for great fellowship: Our Fellowship Ministry provided a diverse offering of social opportunities for our congregation’s enjoyment in 2021 – ranging from a boat cruise on the Desert Bell (Saguaro Lake) and lunch at the Lake’s Ship Rock Café to an ice cream social for the 4th of July patriotic sing-along to serving a festive feast to 170 guests at the Renaissance Yuletide Feaste. After a long pandemic hiatus, the reintroduction of our beloved coffee and donuts made the patio a favorite hangout place between worship services once again.

Letter from Session Adult discipleship opportunities are on the rise: The Adult Discipleship Committee took great strides to develop new and exciting opportunities for discipleship and Christian education in 2021 including our second “Discipleship Rocks” conference with Ron Bennett, a significant increase in class and Bible study offerings, and our exciting new micro discipleship groups. 2021 also saw the kickoff of offerings relating to “Christ and/in Culture” including viewing/discussion groups for “The Chosen” and a partnership with Arizona Christian University for our new “Faith and Film” seasonal series.

Care for Seniors activities are “blasting off:” Our care ministries team has launched “Phase 1” of a bold vision and ongoing commitment to better meet the needs of the aging in our congregation and community. DHPC partnered with BrainSavers™ (brainsavers.com) to create exciting weekly classes to encourage cognitive health, nutrition, physical fitness, socialization, stress reduction, and sleep. This is a great start to even more activities being planned for 2022.

Our campus and ministry spaces are undergoing a “facelift:” We must not forget to celebrate those who made many of the aforementioned events and activities possible – our Building and Grounds committee and our faithful volunteers who are committed to making our campus BEAUTIFUL and INVITING! Our B&G team was hard at work this year on projects “big and small.” The new Family and Student Ministry and Adult Ministry spaces, a sturdy and more functional Fellowship Center stage and video projection, replaced vinyl shades, and an improved landscaped exterior are some of the more obvious improvements. The team also prepared for exciting things to come in 2022, including a completed elevator rebuild in the office building, solar-shaded parking, and a fresh coat of paint on all the building exteriors.

Indeed, we have much to celebrate by way of God’s faithfulness to us in 2021. As we “Dared to be New,” God’s hand of blessing was upon us as a congregation, and He has greatly used us to touch the hearts of His children as we seek to glorify Him in all things and to faithfully proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and to carry out the work of advancing His Kingdom! His plans are amazing and SURELY GOD IS IN THIS PLACE! Consequently, you may discover that we are convinced that God is just getting started and has a great vision for DHPC. As we look forward to 2022, our church leadership eagerly anticipates new programs and enhancing existing programs! During the annual meeting, we will share with you some incredibly exciting developments as we work our mission to see “More People More Like Christ!” You don’t want to miss this!

Adult Discipleship Elder: Bill Billard Staff Liaison: Pastor Brett Everett Members: Shelly Core, Lew Dymond, Cathy Hoxie, Dave Hulbert, Carolyn Lankford, Amy Woods MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Adult Discipleship Committee is to help adults of all ages to better understand the word of God, follow Christ’s teachings and serve as effective witnesses for Christ in thought, word and deed.

Through programs and activities, we hope to build up disciples of Jesus Christ who are able to share the good news of the Gospel with a hurting world.

2021 GOALS Identify and approve specific curricula and develop criteria to evaluate further curricula for use with Discipleship MicroGroups by June 1, 2021.

Grow the number of those having completed or currently completing a discipleship course to 25, by the end of 2021.

The committee also approved a stretch goal of 50 new persons in discipleship training. This will require motivating several Elders or other current disciples to recruit and develop their own MicroGroups by the end of this year.

Plan and identify a speaker for Discipleship Rocks in 2022.

Continue to improve Zoom Room strategies, so that hybrid classes and meetings will be equal in effectiveness to live classes and meetings by year-end.

Provide Sunday, midweek, or seasonal adult discipleship classes reflecting a 25% growth over 2020.

Meet with current and potential Home Group Leaders, and encourage and equip them to resume meeting, either through Zoom, hybrid, or in-person at appropriate times, based on each group’s needs.

2021 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Held our second Discipleship Rocks presentation in March, featuring Ron

Bennett of The Navigators as speaker.

At the request of the Strategic Marketing Committee, delayed the 2022 Discipleship Rocks program until Fall 2022.

Currently, Greg Ogden’s Discipleship Essentials, The Navigators’ HighQuest, and Small Circle are approved curricula for Discipleship Micro-Groups.

More work is needed in this area.

Five Discipleship Micro-Groups and 12 individuals have now completed a discipleship program. Five more groups and 11 additional individuals are currently involved in a study. Two more groups, including four new students, have been delayed by illness, injury or surgery. When they begin, we will have 27 members who have completed or are working on completing a course in building disciples.

Our Zoom Rooms are working very well and are meeting our current needs, meeting our 2021 Goal.

Provided 17 Adult Discipleship class opportunities in 2021, a 31% increase over 2020, meeting our Goal.

A meeting with Home Group Leaders is being planned for early 2022.

The Women’s Ministry held a retreat in May and their Women’s Tea in December. The Tea participants donated over $1500 in gift cards to Christian Family Care.

Purchased and delivered Devotionals to the congregation for both Lent and Advent.

Devotionals were also provided to Chaplaincy for the Homeless and the Walking Beside and Troop Care Ministries.

Other accomplishments in 2021: Developed bookmarks encouraging a Daily Appointment With God (DAWG) and referencing appropriate discipleship verses; added some 20 discipleship books to the church library; participated in the Fall Faith Festival; sponsored two Faith in Film nights with discussion led by Adam Sonstroem, Professor at Arizona Christian University, and Pastor Brett.

Adult Discipleship 2022 GOALS Take a leadership role in developing steps in a church-wide discipleship strategy, leading believers from basic foundational classes through Discipleship and Leadership Training. This must be consistent with the Goals of the Strategic Marketing Plan adopted by Session.

Increase the number of people who have completed or are completing Discipleship Micro-Group training to 45 by the end of 2022.

Develop, or assist in developing, at least three Porches/Gospel Bridges that will bring outside people to our campus.

Examples include Divorce Care

(including for kids), Financial Peace University, and Discipleship Rocks.

Provide leadership training and resources for Home Group Leaders and potential leaders, consistent with the Strategic Marketing Plan (TBD). Assist in developing new leaders and resources that lead toward the development of additional Home Groups.

Prepare classes and equip teachers to support the goals established in the Strategic Marketing Plan.

City of Scottsdale approved the painting of sanctuary/administration building exterior which was last done in 2001.

Driveway marquee lighting was upgraded.

Replaced most of the very old vinyl sunshades in all administration rooms and children classroom areas.

The FC roofs were recoated due to noticeable bubbles in the current roofing material.

Committee approved adding solar to campus by offices and FC. Completed rebuild of FC216 stage area.

All trees were trimmed, and landscape overgrowth cleaned out.

Added on/off Wi-Fi controls to areas where lights were being left on.

Added Eufy cameras (movable and battery powered) to supplement and possibly replace our current broken camera security monitoring system.

Started modernization of the failed administration elevator system.

Began preliminary work to address the need to protect the Fellowship Center elevator from the outdoor elements of heat and dust which will cause equipment failure and premature replacement, and if not addressed, will result in costly consequences of money and down time.

2022 GOALS Continue to replace the remaining fluorescent lighting for our administration and sanctuary rooms to more efficient LED lighting.

Continue to update the short-term and longterm replacement schedule for major capital equipment items.

Continue scanning or photographing of B&G paperwork & documents such as paper blueprints, so that we will have electronic documents rather than paper, for easy access, sharing, and reviews.

Oversee actual painting of sanctuary/ administration building exterior.

Review possible expansion of narthex 3 storage area.

Obtain cost estimates to recoat remaining Admin/Sanctuary roofs not already done.

Family & Student Ministries We had an incredible year in our Student Ministries department, a year full of a myriad of firsts, many highs, and a few lows. We have seen remarkable accomplishments through God in 2021 and we are so excited about what God has planned in 2022!

We helped with church functions as students helped with younger children, production, shoebox packing, Fall Faith Festival, and other areas.

It has been a priority to reach out to the groups that use our facilities. We have initiated a presence at Friday AA meetings (where much of our middle school growth has come via their parents), Tuesday Boy Scouts (we were blessed with a new sports court from an Eagle Scout), and our two homeschool groups where we teach drama and production weekly.

Ten people went to Summer Camp at Forest Home in CA and we doubled that for Winter Camp. Along with the Fall Faith Festival, these camps have helped connect our two groups from DHPC and Leupp in incredible ways. Students are looking forward to future trips.

Small group high school discipleship weekly meetings have begun, and the students have had a blast growing deeper in God’s Word.

These groups have also done various gettogethers like carving pumpkins and learning to cook with Deb McDermott. They were also a huge help serving at our Children’s Jingle Jam and Parents’ nights.

We began our Wednesday night youth program which has seen growth and moved our Sunday program to evenings. Our Middle School has grown from 1 occasional attendee to 5 average attendees each week, mostly from our involvement with AA and Scouts.

Finally, we hosted our first big event with the Disciple National Tour coming in concert. For one night the Fellowship Center was transformed into a state-of-the-art concert venue, and we enjoyed watching as the community came out. Disciple is returning in April 2022.

2021 ACCOMPLISHMENTS We began the year in a mad dash to finish all the “Dare to Be New” environments in the Student and Children’s Ministries which included TVs, new hallways, 80’s Café, Game Room, stages, and studios. So many people gave their time, talents, and treasure to make this happen and the result was truly amazing.

Not only did we modernize our physical environments, but we created and updated our virtual environments as well, from social media and websites to easily controlled banners for our TVs that can be changed with a push of the button, to search engines and filters to help the community find us. Our check-in system got a facelift with printers, scanners, and key fobs. We also updated DHPC’s Child Protection and staff manuals.

We continued to market our youth group, The Hangout, to the community with T-Shirts, cards, stickers, and campaigns, all with the purpose of reaching out to unchurched students. We finished our canopy booth which serves as a welcome/registration booth during programs, and we also will be working with the schools to allow us to set up at football games and assemblies.

We worked with Cactus Shadows for the games and have also begun talks on future endeavors like assemblies, music training, and parent seminars. We partnered with North Valley Christian Academy to provide music and drama training, an assembly where we provided a speaker to speak on positive choices, and we have been given free access to set up our booth.

We were also able to work with other parachurch 2022 GOALS and community groups this year. Chris Haidet has done a remarkable job with fulfilling and exceeding our expectations in 2021 and has put us on track for a fabulous 2022. He truly is a blessing to us all!

2021 GOALS Provide events and activities encouraging social interaction and sharing Christian fellowship.

Provide outings to bring people together of differing generations around a given interest.

Explore new and innovative ways of building relationships among the generations.

Coordinate the work of the Fellowship Committee with other Session committees.

Evaluate at the end of the year and maintain clear records of cyclical events for future use.

2021 ACCOMPLISHMENTS As COVID was still a factor in fellowship events, we continued for look to additional activities that would interest and engage the congregation. Calling on the strength of the congregation, we continued with a variety of Zoom sessions including more Plant-Based demonstrations and favorite recipes.

As the Church opened, the following events occurred: Saguaro Lake Desert Belle boat cruise and lunch at the Lake’s Ship Rock Cafe.

Reopened the coffee fellowship on the patio.

In conjunction with the music department, hosted an ice cream social and sing-along on July 4.

Fun Fall tailgating suggestions and menu demonstration on Zoom.

Provided support for the Fall Faith Festival at Cave Creek Regional Park.

Worked with the Music and Arts Committee to provide help for the Renaissance Yuletide Feaste of 170 guests.

2022 GOALS Continue support for Brain Savers including physical fitness and good nutrition.

With the hope of managing COVID, we look forward to a multitude of opportunities to gather and bring our congregation together in a variety of events: day trips, luncheons, games, hiking, working closely with fellow committees, as needed.

2021 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Arts at the Rocks 2021-2022 season included eleven events: Classical Pianist Vitaly Serebriakov, The Michael Kocour Jazz Trio, Community “Crash” Concert in Carefree, Organist Maestro Hector Olivera, Renaissance Yuletide Feaste, Valley Chamber Chorale, Desert Cactus Kickers, Wyatt Earp one man play, Broadway Love by Fountain Hills Saxophone Quartet in Carefree and finally the Telegraph Quartet from San Francisco. The organ concert was paid for by the Organ Committee and managed by M&A. This is/was a tremendous amount of activity, but is well supported by the congregation and community and we are grateful.

Music & Arts We produced another aesthetically beautiful season brochure thanks to the help and attention to detail from Melissa and Tom Masles. The artwork of local artist and congregation member, Virginia Brooks, was used on the front and back of the season brochure.

To reach others in the community, we added two events that were performed at the pavilion in Carefree. This exposes us to local attendees that might not step into our church.

We decided to continue our Artists-inResidence relationship with Fountain Hills Saxophone Quartet for another year in 2022.

A new relationship was formed with the Cactus Shadows High School Key Club and they have volunteered for a number of Arts at the Rocks events.

Our CCLI stream license was expanded to include all church activities. The Worship Committee shared in the cost.

We voted to support Chris Haidet’s First Annual Drum Off and budgeted dollars for this youth activity. It was later postponed and budgeted dollars reallocated.

Jeffrey Anthony’s musical wish list was approved as it becomes a possibility in the future. This permits us to give a list to potential sponsors when they desire to help out the efforts for new musical instruments.

As the FC stage neared completion, we toured and discussed how to “dedicate” it upon completion. It was decided to add a fun dance event, i.e. Desert Cactus Kickers tap dance group. We are truly blessed to have had a congregation member donate for the completion of the stage. This was critical as the price of wood, etc. had risen significantly. We are thankful to Richard Cook, Dave Zoeteway and Ron Carson for their tireless efforts in the construction. We also added two new projectors so that we can have video on the side walls as well as the front and back.

Melissa and Tom Masles became Committee members in February 2021 and Karen Paisley joined us in September. We still need additional members on our committee and are continually asking for volunteers to consider serving.

We submitted to Session for approval of an expenditure for choir microphones in the Sanctuary to be requested from the Foundation grant funds.

2021 ACCOMPLISHMENTS In-person traditional services were conducted all year.

Live streaming services and meetings would not have been possible without the dedicated work of Music & Arts Elder Darla Gilchrist and the Technology Team she assembled.

Live Stream services have become a critical component of the worship experience at DHPC. We believe this Worship option will continue to be an integral part of our congregational worship.

The Gathering service was suspended in February 2021.

The Gathering has not worked due to COVID and other factors resulting in a continued decline in attendance.

Resources were limited and had to be used wisely and productively for the furtherance of the Gospel.

The session remains committed to a variety of styles of worship and music, including contemporary, and desires to move in another direction with contemporary worship.

Special Services Lenten Services Ash Wednesday Maundy Thursday – Was a very meaningful service planned for the patio but moved into the Fellowship Hall due to high wind concerns. Carol Young’s creative talent was key to the success of this service.

Good Friday – Apr 2 – The Cantata with orchestra – The first of two cantatas presented by the Chancel Choir in 2021.

Easter –four services – 6:30am, 8:00am, 9:30am, 11:00am – the Sonoran Brass played for the three services in the sanctuary. Sunrise service was conducted on the patio.

The Reformation Sunday Cantata proved to be one of the more meaningful services of the year.

Christmas Eve Services - three services were offered with the Sonoran Brass.

To help grow and refine our Traditional Service a team was created to ensure these goals were met.

Ron Carson led a team that developed new banners for display during Lent.

FAITH-BASED GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP Facilitator: Pat Nichols Purpose: To provide opportunities for attendees to share their loss and grief with others who have experienced similar feelings. To offer ways of increasing socialization to improve self-esteem and overcome loneliness.

2021 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Blood pressure clinics were held in May, June, August, September, October, November, and December.

Cyndi and Mary Kay worked 968.83 hours, drove 4,647 miles, and made 3,630 contacts through home visits, phone calls, text messages, and emails. Nursing home and hospital visits were not allowed the first four months of the year due to COVID-19 but were resumed when facilities allowed.

Attended monthly Faith Community Nurse Networking Educational meetings by Zoom and DHPC Deacon meetings in person or by Zoom.

Screened all attending Sunday Morning Worship services by doing temperature checks as congregants arrived and made sure all wore masks or shields over their mouths and noses until April.

Missions Leupp, Arizona, Leupp Presbyterian Church, Pastor Calvin and Native American Ministry 2021 is a story of seeking a new normal with the challenges imposed by the continuing pandemic. We have been the Clan of Christ with Leupp for 39 years and continue to keep our relationship strong in faith and friendship. Pastor Calvin’s live stream services are reaching the unchurched in several states in addition to his local congregation. The Leupp Church has also served as a community food distribution center for those in need. Progress on building the youth and fellowship center has continued during the pandemic. This building was used to live stream services when churches on the reservation were not allowed to open. About 65 visitors from Leupp participated in our Fall Faith Festival ministries.

Many of the elderlies stayed home as a precaution with the continuing spread of COVID. DHPC was given a Navajo Nation Flag to fly over the Fall Faith Festival much to the joy of those in attendance and a special treat was the Navajo Fry Bread freshly made to serve for lunch. DHPC, in partnership with Leupp, continues to support children and youth with donations for Naomi House for abused and orphaned children, scholarships for college and support for youth summer camp attendance.

These are investments in the future of young people that will have lifelong benefits. Our sister church in Leupp has far-

reaching impact on the Navajo Nation through their live stream services. The Hope Resurrected music ministries and testimonials continue to be in high demand.

The year 2022 is the 40-year anniversary of our Clan of Christ sister church relationship. We look forward to celebrating this milestone together with love and unity in Christ.

DHPC Foundation The Year of our Lord 2021 was exciting and rewarding for the DHPC Foundation. After more than six years of existence, the value of the endowment passed the $200,000 threshold which allowed the Board to declare a financial support grant to the Church of $7,596. This amount was determined by taking 5% of the average market value for the last 12 quarters ending in March 2021. Now that the $200,000 threshold has been reached, the Foundation will be able to make similar grants each year and increase them for most future years.

The presentation of this “first-time” grant was celebrated on November 21 during the two traditional services with Eddie Smith, Foundation President, presenting the grant to Darla Gilchrist, Session President. In addition, a separate celebration was held in the Fellowship Hall with historic displays, special refreshments, and a video about the Foundation created by Phil Giriodi.

In addition, during the year, the Foundation was able to provide non-endowment funds from Special Purpose accounts: $6,595 for the Reformation cantata service and Christmas Eve as well as $3,634 to purchase drop-down microphones for the choir loft to enhance the Church’s streaming capability for those worshiping remotely. So, in total, during 2021, the Foundation was able to provide $17,825 in available financial support to DHPC.

In addition to the cash contributions to the endowment, members of the DHPC congregation have added provisions to their wills and related trusts to provide approximately $1.5 million to the Foundation endowment in the future. Earnings on this money will be used to support DHPC as it continues to serve members, friends, and the community with new and beneficial projects and programs.

During the year, the Foundation received cash donations of $43,801 of which $19,000 went to special projects and $24,801 went to the endowment.

Three new members were added to the Foundation Board (Woody Chamberlain, Marsha Lindquist, and Lynn Oates) to replace those members who left the Board (Ron Larson, Gary Gerlach, and John Stevens).

These new members are eligible to continue serving so there will be no change to the Board members for 2022.

The Arizona Community Foundation continues to provide investment services to the Foundation and will be retained for 2022. Under their management, our endowment grew approximately 13% during the first 11 months of 2021.

Because of multiple new members both on Session and the Foundation Board, special Foundation orientation classes were presented to those groups to better equip them to work together and to be able to answer questions from the congregation about the Foundation.

DHPC Foundation Due to COVID, educational and promotional activity regarding the Foundation has significantly declined over the last two or so years.

As a result, we find that a significant number of our congregation are not very well acquainted with the Foundation and its promise of future support for DHPC. So one of our primary objectives for 2022 will be to share information and mission plans with our members, friends, and community to encourage a return of support for the Foundation back to pre-COVID levels.

Nominations were called from the floor. Hearing none, the following motion was made: It was moved, seconded, and motion carried to elect Sandi Carson, Ron Carson, Eddie Smith, Curry Taylor, Carolyn Oates and Barbara Zinser to the Nominating Committee.

Pastor Jim Noble introduced Ron Larson, President of the DHPC Foundation who moved the following amendment to the DHPC Foundation By Laws:

Be it resolved that a new subsection 4 is hereby added to Article III of the Bylaws of the Desert Hills Presbyterian Church Foundation (the “Bylaws”) reading as fol lows: 4. Whenever these Bylaws require approval of the Member, then so long as the Desert Hills Presbyterian Church is the Member, the approval of the Church’s Session shall constitute approval by the Member except that the election of directors pursuant to Subsection 2. a. of Article IV of these Bylaws shall be by the members of the Church.

The motion to accept the amendment to the DHPC Foundation By Laws was seconded and passed.

The moderator, Rev. James K. Noble, III, having declared a quorum of the church present called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM. The Congregational Meeting, held in the Sanctuary and was opened with prayer by Rev. James K. Noble, III.
