MORE PEOPLE, MORE LIKE CHRIST The scriptures teach, “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (I Samuel 16:7) So, we should not be surprised that when we turn to the scriptures to find out what Jesus was like, and find none of our normal categories of description. How short or tall was he? What color was his hair, eyes, skin? What style clothes, shoes, or jewelry did he wear? What about his education, hobbies, music or sport interests? None of these are mentioned.

Instead, all four of the gospels reveal Jesus’ heart, his character. He was a person full of grace and truth, a person of authority and compassion. A person of joy who wanted others to have this joy as well. In Jesus the heart of God is revealed to the world. A heart of faith, hope, and love. His character traits are revealed again and again through his words, actions and interactions with people, as he called people to repent and believe the good news of God, heal the sick, and cast out evil. Jesus was concerned was for a person’s heart and not just their physical, social, or economic well-being. On more than one occasion he said it was not what a person ate that defiled them, but

what came out of their mouth.

“For the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.” Jesus said.

(Matthew 15:18) “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

man history? Pray! Pray for the removal of the infection from our own hearts and the heart of others, that through the grace of Jesus Christ we might have hearts of life. Pray! Pray that the Lord would place in our hearts his own vaccine of the Holy Spirit. For the Spirit produces “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol.” (Galatians 5:23) Pray that at all times and with all people we are “people after the Lord’s own heart.” For the mouth speaks, body acts, and life reveals what the heart is full of.

Our mission as Christians at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church has not changed over the years and is not changing now, as we strive to fulfill our moto, “More People, More Like Christ.” May our words, actions, and life together reveal the Jesus fills our hearts.

Since the beginning of time the devil has been trying to infiltrate human hearts with an infection that produces a loss of faith, hope and love. It is an infection that places a root of bitterness, hatred, envy, lust, cynicism, pride, and much more into the human heart. Once the heart is full of such things, the words and actions soon follow. It is a pandemic infection that uses its host to spread to others and eventually leads to death! This is why the scriptures say, “Guard you heart for it is the wellspring of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23) And the apostle Paul writes, “And the peace of “When I awake, I will be God, which transcends all understandsatisfied with your likeness.” ing, will guard your hearts and your (Psalm 17:15) minds in Christ Jesus. WHO GETS THE LEFTOVERS? If you’re like me, you probably don’t get too excited when leftovers are “what’s for dinner”. Granted, I know there are some who do enjoy thrice-heated steak, fries, and asparagus, but for me, these “once was – now rubber” food offerings, devalue the whole food eating experience.

Please don’t get me wrong, as I am still very grateful for my “daily bread”.

Recently, I revisited a passage of Scripture that, oddly enough, reminded me of leftovers. In the Book of Malachi, we read about God’s confrontation with the people of Israel over their demonstrated spirit of complacency and indifference – perhaps no more evident than in their abominable defilement of the sacrificial system as they placed their blemished sacrifices on God’s altar. In Malachi 1:6, God directs a question to His people that none of us ever want to have directed at us, for He said, “where is the honor and respect due me”? Later, in 1:14, He further

articulates His frustration with His people when He questions whether He should accept their blemished offerings at all. Here He states, “Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows

For things once so pressing… things that occupied so much of my time and resources and left me exhausted each evening… many of these things seemed to fall by the wayside because I could no longer do them, or the Lord impressed upon me some better use of my time. Consequently, in dealing with this text, I did ask myself how I might be robbing God i and giving to Him far less than He deserves. Well, how can we make sure God’s portion does not come out of refrigerated TUPPERWARE containers? Well, answering this question would be a sermon in itself – I’m afraid!

Yet, here are a few practical considerations to get us started and to assist us in evaluating our current standing: 1. Illustrate Your Dependence Upon Him: Start your day off with God. Talk to and more importantly listen to Him. Spend time reading and meditating upon the Word. Leave your quiet time by saying “Lord, let us go into this day together” rather than “Lord, I will see you tomorrow.” Make a conscious effort to invite Him into your day by including Him in every decision especially those you think you can handle on your own. Participate in discipleship and worship opportunities that will lead you to submit more

fully to Jesus as one wholly dependent, and ultimately to “be” more like Christ.

2. Determine to Serve God First: Spend your precious quality time where it really matters in the scope of eternity. Take time to evaluate whether your current list of activities and involvements properly reflects the value you place upon your relationship with Christ and your commitment to serving faithfully in the advancement of his kingdom. Commit to using the gift(s), talents, and abilities God has entrusted to you. Look to see where God is working and willingly join Him there.

3. Tithe: I have already indicated that using our time and talent for the Lord is essential, but how we use our treasure speaks volume too. Jesus frequently used money as a measure of spiritual health because He knew it is usually the last thing committed to Him. God’s portion should be taken “off the top”. I praise God daily that I’m part of a body of believers at DHPC that understands how much God has blessed us as a

church and responds by cheerfully and extravagantly giving so much back to Him! Nowhere has this been made more evident to me that in the faithful tithes that came pouring into the church office even as we have been unable to meet for corporate worship on Sundays for two months!

Church family, I know you’ve heard all this before, right? Yet, even though these concepts are simple and straight forward, they are understandably difficult to carry out in this selfcentered and action-packed world that is always vying for our “first fruits”. What do you think? Is giving God our respect and our unblemished sacrifices really worth it? You had better believe it! Give Him your best and see if He “…will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” [Malachi 3:10].

Have you ever been captivated by a really good book or sat mesmerized at the latest cinematic epic?

Great stories have the ability to capture our imaginations and take us places we could have never dreamed. A good story teller can move and motivate the audience to see people and events in unique and powerful ways. In Christian leadership, I have always believed we have been called to be part of an epic story.

One of my favorite stories is from the second book in the C.S. Lewis masterwork, The Chronicles of Narnia, titled, Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

I marvel at the storytelling of Lewis. What an imagination, what a mind, and what a powerful true story he used for inspiration.

Lewis’ characters are so vivid and rich, full of life and color, and my favorite character by far is the 2-foot tall, swashbuckling mouse named Reepicheep.

This cute, cuddly, high-skilled, and quite deadly character exhibits the very mindset I want to have in my life, to be a confident, courageous, visionary who never shies away from an adventure.

Not hidden like some forsaken

That is where I strive to be as a leader, with the same sky is the limit attitude, a since of duty, honor, loyalty, and a passion for Christ that would charge hell with a bucket of water if asked. I want to meet Christ on that battlefield and I am blessed that Desert Hills is where the next battle is going to happen. I believe God has called all of us to an adventure, a faith journey into the unknown down a path that only God can see. He has called us to endure the waves of life and to grow closer to Christ, by reading that honey sweet word that guides us to reach a dying world with his love. As I look at this church, I have no doubt that God is writing an epic tale for us. We have begun to meet with some of the students via Zoom and I can see that God has laid a good foundation though their families, schools, and this church, but their story is not over, it has only begun. Reepicheep would agree, with any great adventure, there are ups and downs, twists and turns, heroes and villains, moments of doubt

and times of faith that allows the story to flow. God is a master story teller and will find some of the most unique cast of characters weave into it.

To the students: I am genuinely excited for what all God has planned and what power the future holds for you. I am already seeing some of the land ahead and some of the amazing people God is bringing into our fold. I can promise you as a leader, that I will do everything in my power to help you sail down the path God has laid out and to assist you in every way possible in discovering God’s epic in your life. With God as your author, His-story can be made clear to all who seek, through the ministry of this unique band of believers.

To DHPC, I truly believe there is nothing that can stop what God is planning for this student ministry, as long as we remember that Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith, not us. I enthusiastically look forward to standing next to you in utter amazement as God begins to use you to impact this community. After four years in East Texas, it is good to be back in the valley. Thank you for letting me be part of this journey with you.

DON’T WASTE YOUR ADVERSITIES Do you view adversity as an obstacle or an opportunity for spiritual growth?

Think about that question as it relates to how you are handling these unique and troubling times. This pandemic is unlike anything we have experienced before. It is worldwide, and so much is unknown about it.

As a society, we made the decision to shut down parts of our economy to help contain the spread of the virus.

These are extraordinary times.

The spread of the coronavirus across the world and our country has created an incredibly stressful environment for all of us, especially those with underlying health conditions who are at heightened risk. Because we are socially isolated and the media bombards us with the latest numbers on COVID-19 active cases and deaths, we experience a roller coaster of emotions. Our reactions and those of others bounce from disbelief, denial, anxiety, fear, anger, and even depression.

This myriad of feelings results from our concerns such as, what is COVID-19? How do you contract it?

What are the symptoms? What is happening to my family member in a care facility or on the front lines caring for coronavirus patients or those laid off? How long will it take for the stock market to rebound? What will be the resulting value of my assets?

What is all this talk about scams and fraud?

Our questioning, talking, and worrying about our situation, and searching for answers is exhausting.

This exhaustion can result in a lack of concentration, sleeplessness, and lethargy, to name a few maladies.

So, what can we do – which takes us back to our opening question: Do you view adversity as an obstacle or an opportunity for spiritual growth?

Here are some thoughts on the issue from a very wise theologian.

“The determining factor in how we view hardship is our perspective. If we focus only on the negative aspects of our earthly life, we will be drawn into despair and desperation. But if we look at problems from an eternal standpoint, our thinking and attitudes will be transformed.”

“Adversity is the Lord’s most effective way of deepening our faith and commitment to him. The key to such rock-solid faith is an intimate relationship with God. However, we have to choose to tap into God’s power.”

What would it look like to view this pandemic as an opportunity for spiritual growth? Here are examples of what members of our Walking Beside Ministry team are doing.

Sharing half of their baked goods with someone else.

Sending a small gift to someone who needs uplifting.

Meeting someone for lunch where each sit in their car parked in opposing directions.

A parking lot lunch socially distanced with each seated in their own folding chair.

Picking up a takeout meal or groceries and delivering them to someone.

Leaving an uplifting surprise on someone’s doorstep.

couragement to neighbors who may be having a difficult time and leaving them at their doorstep.

How do you choose to view this pandemic, as an obstacle or turn it into an opportunity for spiritual growth for yourself and those around you?

OUR HEARING IS A PRECIOUS GIFT FROM GOD “Ears that hear and eyes that see – the Lord has made them both.” - Proverbs 20:12

by Mary Kay Thurston, RN Hearing Loss: As we age and have chronic exposure to loud noises or other factors such as excessive earwax, or infections, heredity, or some medications we may experience hearing loss. It can happen gradually as we age which is called Presbycusis. (I think that means it happens to Presbyterians most frequently ……Ha Ha). About one-third of people in the United States between ages 65 & 75 have some degree of hearing loss. For people older than 75 the ratio is approximately 1 in 2. Hearing loss is defined as one of three types: Conductive: which involves the outer or middle ear Sensorineural: which involves the inner ear Mixed: which is a combination of the two You cannot reverse most types of hearing loss but you and your doctor or a hearing specialist can take steps to improve what you hear.

How you hear: Your ear consists of three major areas: outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.

Sound waves pass through the outer ear and cause vibrations at the eardrum. The eardrum and three small bones of the middle ear amplify the vibra-

tions as they travel to the inner ear. There, the vibrations pass through fluid in a snail-shaped structure in the inner ear (cochlea). Attached to nerve cells in the cochlea are thousands of tiny hairs that help translate sound vibrations into electrical signals that are transmitted to your brain. Your brain turns these signals into sound. (Our God is an awesome God) To prevent noise induced hearing loss: Protect your ears from loud noises with earplugs.

Have regular hearing tests if you notice a decline in your hearing or as you age.

Avoid activities that involve loud noises.

Treatments for hearing loss depend on the cause and severity. It could be as simple as removing wax blockage, hearing aids, or surgical procedures or cochlear implants. See your Primary Care Doctor or an ENT Specialist.

Inadequacy: Have you ever avoided a service opportunity simply because you felt totally unqualified? That’s probably how Timothy felt about leading the church at Ephesus. Our spiritual gifts rarely come to us fully developed. God often requires that we step out in faith and trust Him to work in and through us.

Over time, as we obey and learn how to use our gifts, they become more effective for God’s kingdom.

Is there anything keeping you from using your spiritual gifts? Though given to us, these abilities aren’t for us, they for the church. To neglect them not only deprives fellow believers; we ourselves are also robbed. We’ll find both joy and blessing by serving others and doing work God has designated for us.

PREPARING FOR THE RE-OPENING OF THE DHPC CAMPUS

Bible Studies, Sunday School, Mahjong, Committee Meetings, The Divine Sticherhood, Griefshare, Holy Yoga‌these are just a few of the great DHPC programs that are not currently meeting on campus due to COVID -19. To date, The Session has only approved in-person attendance at Sunday services with safety precautions. Precautions include making reservations for attendance, wearing a mask and social-distancing.

The date for reopening the DHPC campus for other events is still to be de-

termined. In preparation of that anticipated date, the church office has prepared a new Building Usage Application. This form includes new guidelines for room usage. All group leaders are encouraged to fill-out and return a form to the church office to prepare for re-opening.

The students also invite others to their graduations where the Gospel is shared. This often brings parents, siblings, and friends to accept Christ and become active members in the local church.

Families are reached, churches grow, new churches are started, and communities are transformed.

What Goes In My Shoebox?

Back-To-School Sales start in August for school supplies! This is a good time to shop ahead for your shoeboxes. Check out stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, and even grocery stores.

You can fill multiple boxes.

You can designate each box for a boy or a girl. Age ranges are 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14, you pick.
