Children & Student Ministry as our part-time Sr. High Youth Director we began offering a once a month Youth Group for Sr. High (9th-12th grade) in August. Our plan was to offer a Youth Group for 4th-8th grade at the beginning of 2020.

As we gain consistent attendance the frequency of Youth Group meetings would increase.

I would like to acknowledge how different areas of the church have welcomed working with Student Ministry. Our elementary students and recently our 4th-8th grade students have worked on projects supporting the Troop Care Ministry. Art and Music have offered opportunities for our older students to participate in Art at the Rocks events. Mission approached us to serve by “Praying for the World” in which we would pray for a different country each Sunday. The Gathering worked with Student Ministry to they prepare their special multi-generational Christmas worship service, “Sounds of Christmas.”

A thank you to those members of our church both adults and students who helped with the Student Ministry Fall Faith Festival tent.

To work with the Student Ministry team has been a joy and I thank them with all my heart for their hard work and dedication to our students of all ages. It is with sadness that I am no longer involved but wish all the best to the Bible-based programming now offered to our students of all ages.

Rachael Moomey was hired as part time Senior Youth Director.

2019 Accomplishments Outreach through “Arts at the Rocks” concerts for DHPC and the surrounding community. For the 2019-2020 current season, we added Workshops by

the artists, and made both the Workshops and the Concerts FREE of charge. The season began with Sam Rotman, world renowned concert pianist in October, followed by Comedian Mark Cordes in November, and the Valley Chamber Chorale in December.

The remaining events are Gospel Music Legends, The Blackwood Brothers Quartet in January; Forte Handbell Quartet in February; and the Jasper String Quartet in early March. In addition, our committee assisted the Organ Committee by handling the details of the Dan Miller Organ Dedication Concert in September. We also published another professional season brochure and increased our spending for advertising these events.

The Gathering Worship Service – Mikey Moomey has been instrumental in enhancing the music and worship at The Gathering. Under Mikey’s leadership, creativity with the flow of worship, song selection (including hymns), and inclusion of different ways to present the reading and hearing of the Word, have enhanced the worship time. He uses various technologies to assist the musicians with preparing and rehearsing the music, and his knowledge of equipment and instrumental arranging has increased the quality of the musicians and the sound. The main needs continue to be increasing the attendance at The Gathering and adding to the number of musicians available. We encourage our church family to stop by and experience the worship service or simply join in the opening 15 minutes of the worship service so DHPC members may help to spread the word to our neighbors about what is happening at The Gathering!

Worship Committee continues to support The Gathering worship style, while encouraging Mikey Moomey to feel free to bring appropriate creative ideas to the worship service, including traditional elements and hymns.

Christmas Eve 2019 – Starting in 2018, the 5 p.m. Christmas Eve worship service was held in Fellowship Center so that instruments did not have to be moved to the Sanctuary building, allowing needed time for rehearsals. This change in venue also allows the Traditional Services more time

Providing inspiring worship services – Many, many hands are involved in the three weekly worship services. We are thankful for: our dedicated and talented Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir, and The Gathering Team members; our ushers; our communion preparers under the direction of Kathy and Ross Mulder; those who serve communion; Susan Smith’s leadership surrounding all things flowers; those who led special worship services such as Maundy Thursday; those who baked cookies for Father’s Day and distributed flowers on Mother’s Day; those who take care of tidying the Sanctuary; our sound and tech workers; the many volunteer hours of Ron Carson; those who decorate for Christmas; and our dedicated staff members who assist in so many ways. The ministry opportunities are varied; and there is no way to name each and every individual who contributes to the worship experience. Ministry at The Heritage – DHPC takes worship out into the community on a monthly basis to The Heritage, an assisted living facility in Carefree. Volunteers lead music, prayer, and share Scripture and a short devotion with the residents and enjoy a precious time of fellowship. We thank Jeffrey Anthony and Susan Constance for providing piano music this past year. Join us for about an hour on the second Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m.

Parking Needs – The Worship Committee continues to focus discussions surrounding the wonderful problem of a full Sanctuary at the 2nd Worship Service, parking issues, how to balance attendance at the three services, and how to grow The Gathering Worship Service. We encourage those who are able and willing to walk from El Pedregal to park there during our busiest seasons so that those who have physical needs may park closer to the buildings.

Special Sundays Calendar – The Worship Committee has created a yearly calendar for special events during the church year so that planning is simplified. There have also been special donations made for The Gathering. If you are interested in supporting any of the worship ministries with a contribution over and above our budgets,

Missions Foodbank serviced more than 13,210 people in need of food, provided more than 200 Snack Packs (lunches & weekend meals for kids), distributed more than 125,000 lbs. of food, and paid more than $56,747 in financial assistance for utility bills, gasoline, clothing and pharmacy items. This community, which includes DHPC, collectively provided all the food/funding and over 400 volunteers who donated over 30,000 hours of their time.

Neighbors in Need - A collaboration of 5 churches and 5 agencies working to bring connections to those in need.

We help the agencies to meet needs that aren’t currently being met. These are challenges facing youth/families, veterans, working adults and the elderly in our community and ways are found to address these challenges.

Troop Care Ministry - Founded in 2007, all activities and projects are aligned with our purpose statement: “To provide troop care support from a faith-based perspective, to the local community, Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, and Leupp Presbyterian Church.” Activities supported by TCM last year were: care packages sent quarterly to those on active duty (90 total); prayer for those on active duty; recognition of patriotic holidays; 1,700 hand-written Christmas cards delivered to veterans in the Phoenix VA Hospital; Veterans Day Event; Veterans Heritage Project; reading material collected and distributed to the Phoenix VA Hospital and other locations; grocery and store gift cards collected

and given to the Air Force Aid Society for those in need at Luke Air Force Base; and visitation of homebound veterans. None of these activities would be possible without the support of church members and regular visitors; approximately 80 volunteers were involved in this ministry in one way or another last year.

Fall Faith Festival - In 2019, we held our 3rd Annual Fall Faith Festival.

This church-wide event provides an opportunity for all church members and the local community to gather for fellowship, fun, food, and music.

Booths provide for participation in a variety of hands-on mission projects, and donations are collected for various ministries and missions, including local charities and Naomi House on the Navajo reservation. Our Leupp sister church worked side-by-side with us on this outreach event. Their jewelry sellers also had an opportunity to sell jewelry to church members and the public. Some people donated the jewelry they bought to the McCallums to take as gifts to global pastors; a unique way DHPC and Leupp together bless the nations. During the Sunday potluck, our Mission trip to Poland with sister churches in Leupp and Jamaica, was shared with pictures and testimonials. Special events like this demonstrate the power of Christ in our lives.

Native American Ministries The Clan of Christ adventure continues with 2019 being our 37th year of ministry with our Leupp sister church. The last weekend of April, 35 travelers went to Leupp to worship together and explore the history of the Navajo people. We learned from Pastor Danny Halwood how the early Navajo Christians endured hardships to cross Canyon De Chelly to worship each week. His testimonial was moving and personal as he shared his family experience. Calvin and Eunice then escorted us on a hike to the White House Ruins in Canyon De Chelly. This is sacred ground to Navajo and can only be visited with a native guide. It was wonderful to experience the scenic beauty of the canyon, hear the story of the ruins and see the ancient petroglyphs with our Leupp friends. On Sunday, DHPC women joined the choir and wore the Navajo skirts given to them previously. The sermon was bilingual with Pastor Jim being interpreted by Pastor Calvin. It is always fun to see the Navajo reactions mirror ours when they hear the words repeated in their native language.

• Hope Resurrected has evolved from a small group of single men recovering from bad life choices to a group of hardworking families banded together in outreach ministries. In addition to supporting Naomi House children with their time and gifts, leading AA meetings and ministering to the homeless, Hope Resurrected families are becoming leaders in the church. We support their ministry as brothers and sisters in Christ with prayer, financial help, and donations for Naomi

Missions House. This helps Hope Resurrected provide food, clothing, hygiene items and personal gifts for the orphans and others in need. Hope Resurrected ministries are a blessing on the reservation.

• 1st Presbyterian Church of Leupp - We provide general support to 1st Presbyterian Church of Leupp. Their Session directs resources to do what is necessary to support the local youth groups and other ongoing needs. This includes resolving special needs as they arise and helps the youth attend Christian based youth camp.

We continue to bring together teens and young people from DHPC and Leupp to grow in their faith through retreats and recreational time together.

During 2019, the following members served on the Finance Committee: Scott Core, Larry Hillwig, Lisa Loran, and Kristen Micurescu. Darla Gilchrist was a member of the committee until she left to become Elder of Music and Arts. Oran Brown joined the committee late this fall.

Jim Noble serves as an ex officio member of our Committee and we have benefited greatly from the input Jim provides based among other things on his broad knowledge of what’s going on in the many ministries of our Church.

She records member contributions in the Church’s tracking software; keeps track of Church expenditures; prepares financial statements for the Church (including the statements which follow this report); assembles pledges and staff and Session expenditure requests into a coherent budget; organizes and maintains backup documents; and provides other information to the pastors, Session and Finance Committee as needed. Bobi does all this with a very pleasant personality and is always eager to respond to the many requests for information she receives. She continues to be a key participant in the Church’s financial administration and the Finance Com-

Introduction to the Included Financial Statements: The first key to understanding the financial statements that follow is to understand the Church’s cash on hand as shown below: Restricted Cash: The Church Session has established a number of notional accounts (the “dedicated accounts”) each devoted to a major need or area of ministry. Contributions by members directed to one of these dedicated accounts can be spent only for the purpose for which the account was established. Member contributions to these accounts is classified as restricted cash.

The 2019 ending balance in these accounts was $98,701.21.

Reserved Cash: The Session from time to time elects to allocate other cash held by the Church to dedicated accounts. For example, the Session has established a capital replacement fund dedicated account. The intention is that the money allocated to the capital replacement fund can be used to fund the maintenance/repair/replacement prioritized schedule developed and maintained by the Buildings and Grounds Committee. The 2019 yearend balance in the capital replacement fund was $85,672. The new initiatives fund is also a reserve account. The Session reserves the right at any time to reallocate reserved cash among the dedicated accounts or to remove reserved cash from a dedicated account

Dedicated accounts are “notional” in the sense that they are created in the Church’s accounting software to keep track of the allocations of restricted and reserved cash but do not have separate bank accounts, with the exception of scholarships and memorial garden. These accounts do not appear separately on the balance sheet or income statement. All details are on the restricted Fund Trial Balance. The bank and investment accounts maintained by the Church contain restricted, reserved and unrestricted cash (combined).

The second key to understanding the Church’s financial statements is that in almost all cases, neither the operating budget nor the operating statement includes receipt of restricted cash, the allocation of reserved cash to a dedicated account, or the expenditure of restricted or reserved cash. Those receipts, allocations, and expenditures are instead reflected in the separate Dedicated Accounts Statement.

DHPC Foundation

The Desert Hills Presbyterian Church Foundation has now finished the fourth year of official operations. The Founders Fellowship Fifty has grown to 67 at the end of 2019.

The Board sponsored a Celebration Dinner at the Boulders for all the Founders who could attend on February 9th, 2019 to celebrate the level of donations and personal commitments to estate planning for the Foundation. There were 50 Founders who signed up for the event and all 50 made it to an enjoyable evening, dinner and presentation about the progress and dreams of the Foundation.

The Board of the DHPC Foundation for 2019 were: David Bell, President Lisa Loran, Secretary Bob Kinderman, Treasurer Gary Gerlach Ron Larson Eddie Smith John Stevens We also have Ex-Officio Member (nonvoting) Allan Watson, Church Treasurer.

We are pleased to have Allan in our meetings so that we can keep the Session informed on our progress and projects.

Community Foundation continues to grow. When it reaches $200,000 there will be an annual distribution to the Church for projects assigned by Session.

We received new donations during the year of about $20,000. We also were informed that the Foundation would be the future recipient of over $1,000,000 from a family in the church from their estate planning. There are others who have indicated what they plan to give to the Foundation in their estate plans and that amount plus the amount just mentioned would be almost $2,000,000 in the future.

This is the expected outcome of setting up the Foundation over 8 years ago. These gifts will provide future expenditures to support projects that the Church Session feels are important to the growth of the Church like the organ recitals and special music programs last year.
