Away in a Manger

Hymn #262, vs. 1 & 3

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION O God of all the earth, we bow before You with prayers of praise and thanksgiving and confession of sin. We have just celebrated Christmas, yet much of its meaning has escaped us. There is little peace on earth, much less in our own hearts. You have given Your Son for our salvation, but our sinfulness has not ceased. You have proclaimed Your love for us, but we have often felt unloved and been unloving. Indeed, we have substituted tinsel and wrappings for the true meaning of Jesus’ birthday, and there is little health in us. Forgive our sinning, we pray, and in Jesus raise us to newness of life. And give us, O God, such love and wonder, that with shepherds and wise men and pilgrims unknown, we may come to adore the holy child, the promised King and Prince of Peace, and with our gifts worship Him, our Lord and Savior. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON

John 3:16-17

Leader: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. page 4

CAROL

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION

Good Christian Friends, Rejoice

Hymn #273, v. 3

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Hymn #250, v.4

SCRIPTURE 2 Peter 1:12-21 So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. page 5

Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *CAROL

Infant Holy, Infant Lowly

We have traveled many moonless nights, cold and weary with a babe inside. and I wonder what I've done. Holy Father, you have come and chosen me now to carry your son. We are waiting in a silent prayer, We are frightened by the load we bear. In a world as cold as stone Must we walk this path alone? Be with me now. Be with me now.

Hymn #277

Chorus: Breath of Heaven, Hold us together, be forever near us, Breath of Heaven. Breath of Heaven, Lighten our darkness, pour over us your holiness, for you are holy. Breath of Heaven. Do you wonder as you watch her face, if a wiser pair should have had our place? But we offer all we are, for the mercy of your plan. Help me be strong, Help me be, Help me Chorus

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 55

“Come, all you who are thirsty. Come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David. See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a ruler and commander of the peoples. Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations you do no know will come running to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with splendor.” Seek the Lord while he may be found; call him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher that the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down for heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.” SERMON

“BE A BLESSING”

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members. Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn

Zoom Mondays at 6:30pm

New Women's Bible Study beginning January 10 and January 13!

Join sisters in Christ as we study Hebrews. This 7-week, DVD-based study is Zoom & In-person taught by Lisa Harper and both groups are led by Kathleen Harris. Please purThursdays at 10:00am chase your book before the first class. Two chances for study: Monday at 6:30pm via Zoom or Thursday at 10:00am in-person and via Zoom. A little about the study..."Hebrews was a sermon for a specific people and culture in the midst of martyrdom and persecution, but is also so relevant for us today, reminding us to continue walking toward Jesus regardless of our culture or our circumstances. Join Lisa as she journeys through this bridge between the Old and New Testaments to get to the heart of the matter: Jesus is our accessible King. He is not a faraway God, but an up-close Redeemer who draws near to us. Hebrews helps women make the connection between God the Father and God the Son and reminds us that Jesus is supreme, but He is also compassionate, empathetic, and loving to no end. Lisa Harper makes digging into Hebrews fun and doable, as only she can, without losing an ounce of depth." For more information or to sign up please contact Kathleen @ 602-741-3429 cell (call or text) or email kharris@deserthills.org page 15
