SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday December 5, 2021 9:00AM/10:30AM PRELUDE

*CALL TO WORSHIP (based on 1 John 4:9-11) Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader:

This is how God showed His love among us. He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love. Not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Therefore, let us turn to the Lord in meditation upon these truths.

HYMN #199

King of Kings

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 3

*HYMN

#245, v. 2

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

1. O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer Our spirits by Thine advent here; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death’s dark shadows put to flight. Refrain Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING PRAYER OF CONFESSION Loving Lord, you love us when we are unlovable, and care for us when we are uncaring toward others, we confess together the sins and shortcomings that damage our relationship with you and others. As silently and by night you did steal into our world long ago in the form of a human baby, so, we pray, while we sit here in silence, steal into our lives in the Spirit of that same Christ. As the dark night was made bright by the light of a star, and a cold stable was made warm by the warmth of your holy presence, so enlighten our dark minds and melt our cold hearts, by coming unto us to share with us the days in which we live; through Christ our Lord. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON

John 3:16-17

Leader: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to con demn the world, but to save the world through him. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 9:17

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! page 4

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #243

DOXOLOGY #815 OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE

John 15:9-17

9

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other. SERMON

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members. Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn
