SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday November 28, 2021 9:00AM/10:30AM PRELUDE

*CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Isaiah 12:5–6) Leader: Sing praises to God on high, for glorious are God’s works. People: Sing praises to the ends of the earth. Leader: Shout and sing for joy, O people of God, All: for great is the Holy One in our midst, blessed is the One who comes to dwell among us.

HYMN #244

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. page 3

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING *HYMN #245, v. 1 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel 1. O come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear. Refrain Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of compassion, in Jesus Christ we behold your transforming light, yet we continue to live in darkness. Preoccupied with ourselves, we fail to see your work in the world. We speak when we should listen, we act when we should reflect. Empower us to live in your light and to walk in your ways, for the sake of Him who is the Light of the world, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (John 3:16-17) Leader:

All:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have life everlasting. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

SCRIPTURE

John 3:16-21

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *HYMN #243

SCRIPTURE

John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members. Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn
