*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, The holy catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy Lord, we are guilty of pride and unbelief, of failure to obey Your Word, of neglect to seek You in our daily lives. Forgive us of our violations and shortcomings, for we lay them all now on Christ. Lord, subdue our weaknesses and selfishness. Grant us grace to live above, and not be mastered by them. Reign over us in liberty and power. We praise and thank You for Your wisdom and love, for sometimes putting us into the furnace to refine our gold and remove our dross. Deliver us from every evil habit, everything that dims the brightness of Your grace in us, everything that prevents us from taking our deepest delight in You. For we ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader: It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM In ages past the mighty Lord by prophets spoke the Word, And from their lips God’s great design throughout the earth was heard. In revelation, parable, bold fantasy, and dream, They echoed God’s eternal vow to ransom and redeem.
Song of the Prophets Summer Choir The day of wrath is close at hand, when God will draw the line between the good and wicked lot, the vinegar and wine. Their destiny lies at the end of chosen paths they trod: the sinners lost in dark dismay, the saints at home with God.
Michael Morgan Yet still in present, troubled days we seek to hear God’s voice, and in the face of our distress, find reason to rejoice. Grant us the wisdom to discern through faith who we should be⎯ a fallen race, restored through grace, a captive world set free.
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE Obadiah 1-16 1 The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom— We have heard a message from the Lord: An envoy was sent to the nations to say, “Rise, let us go against her for battle”—2 “See, I will make you small among the nations; you will be utterly despised. 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ 4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord. 5 “If thieves came to you, if robbers in the night—oh, what a disaster awaits you! — would they not steal only as much as they wanted? If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave a few grapes? 6 But how Esau will be ransacked, his hidden treasures pillaged! 7 All your allies will force you to the border; your friends will deceive and overpower you; those who eat your bread will set a trap for you, but you will not detect it. 8 “In that day,” declares the Lord,“will I not destroy the wise men of Edom, those of understanding in the mountains of Esau? 9 Your warriors, Teman, will be terrified, and everyone in Esau’s mountains will be cut down in the slaughter. 10 Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.
11
On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.12 You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.13 You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster. 14 You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble. 15 “The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head. 16 Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been. Leader: All:
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *HYMN #29

Marge Sutton and Richard Cook, soloists Susan Constance, piano Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps; They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
*DOXOLOGY
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me; As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free.
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Obadiah 17-21 17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; it will be holy, and Jacob will possess his inheritance. 18 Jacob will be a fire and Joseph a flame; Esau will be stubble, and they will set him on fire and destroy him. There will be no survivors from Esau.” The Lord has spoken. 19 People from the Negev will occupy the mountains of Esau, and people from the foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead. 20 This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan will possess the land as far as Zarephath; the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the towns of the Negev. 21Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the Lord’s. SERMON

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY The Lord said that though adversity is part of earthly life, He has overcome the world (John 16:33). Any time God allows trials in our life, He has a purpose for them. No matter where affliction originates, by the time it reaches us, it’s been shaped according to the Father’s good purposes. God is teaching us something that will help us succeed later. The question is: Will we cooperate with Him or resist? When we experience trials or trouble, it becomes an opportunity for growth. Are you struggling with some adversity in your life? Do you need a Christian ear to help you recognize the opportunity the Lord has placed in front of you? We are here to listen and encourage; give us a call.
