PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious Lord, you have blessed us with freedom—freedom to follow or turn away; freedom to love or hate; freedom to heal or hurt; freedom to serve or forsake. You ask only that we follow your ways, loving you, and loving our neighbors as ourselves. In the midst of our turbulent lives, forgive us where we have fallen short in using our freedoms to honor you and to advance your kingdom here on earth. Make us more like Christ today. In Jesus’ Name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader: It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Galatians 5:1, 13-26 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 13

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. 16

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*DOXOLOGY

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE John 8:31-36 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33

They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. SERMON

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY The Lord said that though adversity is part of earthly life, He has overcome the world (John 16:33). Any time God allows trials in our life, He has a purpose for them. No matter where affliction originates, by the time it reaches us, it’s been shaped according to the Father’s good purposes. God is teaching us something that will help us succeed later. The question is: Will we cooperate with Him or resist? When we experience trials or trouble, it becomes an opportunity for growth. Are you struggling with some adversity in your life? Do you need a Christian ear to help you recognize the opportunity the Lord has placed in front of you? We are here to listen and encourage; give us a call. Are you in need of PRAYER? We are here to pray for you and with you. Our Sunday Prayer team believes in the power of prayer. Look for one of us with a purple lanyard throughout the church grounds before or after each church service. We will pray with you and/or fill out a prayer request card for continual prayer. “…in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6).”

ummer inging upper essions During the summer (June-September), the Chancel Choir transforms into the Summer Choir. This choir offers a chance for people to participate without the normal time commitment of regular Wednesday rehearsals. We meet each Sunday morning at 8:00 to learn a simple anthem to sing in worship that day at the 9:00 and 10:30 services. Singers can come whenever they would like (e.g. one time, once a month, every third Sunday in months beginning with J-you get the idea). No sign-up is required; just show up on Sunday New this summer: One Wednesday each month, we will have a potluck dinner and social event where we can also run through the upcoming anthems for the month so they are not brand new on Sunday mornings. This is OPTIONAL, but promises to be a lot of FUN, so join us if you can! Please email Jeffrey (music@deserthills.org) if you plan to attend so we have enough food for you! THE NEXT SUPPERS WILL BE AT 6:00 P.M. ON This week!

It’s not too late to register for our Music Summer Camp!
