GATHERING

What Does the Lord Require of You

*CALL TO WORSHIP (adapted from Psalm 40)

Leader: I waited patiently for the Lord.

People: He turned and heard my cry.

Leader: He lifted me up and out of the pit, out of the miry clay.

People: He set my feet upon the rock and made my footsteps secure.

Leader: Let us wait patiently for the Lord and turn to God in prayer.

*PRAYER OF INVOCATION

*HYMN For the Beauty of the Earth

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, The holy catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God of burning bushes, we have chosen to live with dulled eyes and spirits, forgetting Your gifts and ignoring Your challenges. The cries of Your people seldom reach our ears because we insulate ourselves from others’ pain. In our insensitivity we miss the flames on Your holy ground, for the deeply spiritual experience comes not only in isolation, but also as we care about people. We do not ask for escape from life’s difficulties, but for awareness and courage to tackle the tasks You assign us. Help us today to produce the Fruit of the Spirit. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (John 3:16-17)

Leader: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION

Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God!
