Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord God, you know us too well. You know that like the disciples after the crucifixion, we would rather hide and mutter and weep, than proclaim the power of your love. The world is a difficult and scary place. We want people to like us, and so we hold back on our proclamation of our faith. We don’t want to offend anyone. But your love and presence are not offensive, but empowering and healing. Forgive us O Lord. Bring your holy fire upon us this day to ignite a spark of joy in our hearts and voices. Bring the power of your rushing wind through our spirits that we may be turned in new directions for service and witness. We pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Leader: It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, let us assure one another of God's pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE Acts 2:1-13 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. (continued)
3
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 13
Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *HYMN #383

Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, Come and fill our hearts with joy and love. Melt away these clouds of night, Flood the world with glorious light. Refrain *DOXOLOGY #815
OLD HUNDREDTH
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Ephesians 5:15-21 15 16 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY As we have learned from the sermons the last several weeks, the Lord allows pain in our life. Sometimes He even orchestrates it. Trials often strengthen our faith, make us more like Jesus, and give us compassion for others. With His help, we profit immensely more from walking through the pain than from trying to avoid it. Walking Beside team members are here to walk with you through times like Job’s by providing encouragement, inspiration, and hope through the presence of Christ’s love. We look forward to hearing from you. (Our ministry relies solely on funds raised; we are not funded by the church operating budget.) Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn

ummer inging upper essions During the summer (June-September), the Chancel Choir transforms into the Summer Choir. This choir offers a chance for people to participate without the normal time commitment of regular Wednesday rehearsals. We meet each Sunday morning at 8:00 to learn a simple anthem to sing in worship that day at the 9:00 and 10:30 services. Singers can come whenever they would like (e.g. one time, once a month, every third Sunday in months beginning with J-you get the idea). No sign-up is required; just show up on Sunday morning. New this summer: One Wednesday each month, we will have a potluck dinner and social event where we can also run through the upcoming anthems for the month so they are not brand new on Sunday mornings. This is OPTIONAL, but promises to be a lot of FUN, so join us if you can! Please email Jeffrey (music@deserthills.org) if you plan to attend so we can coordinate food. THE NEXT SUPPER WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8 @ 6:00 P.M.
