PRAYER OF CONFESSION Refrain:
Leader: All: Leader:
All: Leader: All:
O Lord, who on this day entered the rebellious city that later rejected you: we confess that our wills are as rebellious as Jerusalem’s, that our faith is often more show than substance, that our hearts are in need of cleansing. God of grace, hear our prayer: Refrain Triumphant Lord, we rejoice in your entry into the world and into our lives! Joining with the crowds, we sing your praises and exalt your reign, but even so, our hearts are far from true worship, our minds are distant from true understanding. Our sin leads us to give you death even though you give us life. God of grace, hear our prayer: Refrain Have mercy on us, son of David, Savior of our lives. Help us to lay at your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting you to forgive what is sinful, to heal what is broken, to welcome our praises, and to receive us as your own. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON 1 John 1:9 Leader: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. OFFERING OURSELVES IN PRAYER PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Merciful God, as we enter Holy week, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem, and to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Stir up within us the gift of faith that we may not only praise him with our lips, but may follow him in the way of the cross. Amen. CANTATA

The Triumphal Entry Scripture: John 12:12-15 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”

Song:
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to the King. Refrain: Ride on, King Jesus! Ride on in-a majesty. Ride on, King Jesus, ride on! Redeemer, King we now honor Thee.
He’s passing through the city gates. Ride on in-a majesty. His glorious Kingdom now awaits. Redeemer, King we now honor Thee.
Hosannas, loud hosannas sing. Ride on in-a majesty. Palms and glory now we bring. Redeemer, King we now honor Thee. Refrain
Now we exalt His blessed name. Ride on in-a majesty. Loudest praises we proclaim. Redeemer, King we now honor Thee.
The Last Supper Scripture: Matthew 26:26-30 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Song:
At the end of the week, in an upper room they gathered to partake of the Passover meal. Jesus told His disciples that He was to suffer— they were to eat in remembrance of Him. Take this bread, I give it to you; And as you do, remember Me. This bread is My body broken just for you. Take it, eat it; Each time you do, remember Me.
Take this cup, I’ve filled it for you; And as you do, remember Me. This cup is the new covenant I’m making with you. Take it, drink it; Each time you do, remember Me.
Take this love I’ve given to you; And as you do, remember Me. page 5
Gethsemane Scripture: Matthew 26:36-39 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Song: ‘Tis midnight and on Olive’s brow The star is dimmed that lately shone; ‘Tis midnight, in the garden now, The suff’ring Savior prays alone. The olive branches hung their heads so pitiful and pale To see His face bowed to the ground with sorrow overwhelmed. “My Father, take this cup,” He prayed as mingled sweat and blood was pouring down His holy face the sacrifice of love. His heart so pure and tender, surrendered to the bitter cup of grief, “Thy will be done,” He cried alone in dark Gethsemane. O olive branches, hush your tears, O mournful breeze be still; Let us hear again the cry, “Dear Father, not My will.” Remind us of the Savior’s grief, The cross that He would bear, The crushing weight of human sin was waiting for Him there. His heart so pure and tender, surrendered to the bitter cup of grief, “Thy will be done,” He cried alone in dark Gethsemane.

The Arrest and Trial Scripture: Mark 15:1, 6-15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they shouted. “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. Song: Who shall I release to you? This Jesus, or Barabbas? Release Barabbas! What shall I do with the king of the Jews, this man who is called the Christ? Let Him be crucified! Why should He die, He has done no crime deserving of a cross. Let Him be crucified! I find no fault in Him. Crucify, crucify, crucify! What evil has He done? Crucify, crucify, crucify! I am innocent of this man’s blood! Crucify, crucify! Let Him be crucified! Crucified! Let Him be crucified, crucified, crucified! Congregation: [shouted] Crucify! page 7
The Crucifixion Scripture: Luke 23:44-46a It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Song: Cross of Jesus, cross of sorrow, Where the blood of Christ was shed, Perfect man on thee was tortured, Perfect God on thee has bled! When He forgave the men who nailed Him to the cross Before the Roman soldier said, “This was the Son of God.” When He became the river that washes sin away, Those who stood nearby heard Jesus say: “Into Your hands, into Your hands, Into Your hands I give My spirit; Into Your hands, into Your hands, I give my life into Your hands.” Scripture: Luke 23:46b When he had said this, he breathed his last. THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY As we have learned from the sermons on Job the last several weeks, the Lord allows pain in our life. Sometimes He even orchestrates it. Trials often strengthen our faith, make us more like Jesus, and give us compassion for others. With His help, we profit immensely more from walking through the pain than from trying to avoid it. Walking Beside team members are here to walk with you through times like Job’s by providing encouragement, inspiration, and hope through the presence of Christ’s love. We look forward to hearing from you. (Our ministry relies solely on funds raised; we are not funded by the church operating budget.) Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn
