*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Come, travelers and sojourners; there is a place for you here. People: God grants bread for our journey and offers places of refuge on the way.

Leader: Blessed are those who hope in the Lord, and avail themselves of God’s ever present help. People: God reigns in righteousness forever and ever; we will sing God’s praises as long as we live. Leader: Let us prepare our hearts for worship in prayer. *PRAYER OF INVOCATION *HYMN #3

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

page 2

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, The holy catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord Jesus, we confess the blindness that is not aware of sinning, the pride that dares not admit it is wrong, the self that sees nothing but its own will, the “righteousness” that knows no fault, and the callousness that has ceased to care. Forgive us, Lord, and make us more in Your image. Amen. ASSURANCE 1 John 1:9 Leader: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM

Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown

Charles Wesley

Chancel Choir Come, O thou Traveler unknown, whom still I hold, but cannot see; my company before is gone, and I am left alone with thee. With thee all night I mean to stay, and wrestle till the break of day.

Yield to me now, for I am weak but confident in self-despair; speak to my heart, in blessings speak, be conquered by my instant prayer. Speak, or thou never hence shalt move, and tell me, if thy name is Love.

I need not tell thee who I am, my misery or sin declare; thyself hast called me by my name, look on thy hands, and read it there. But who, I ask thee, who art thou? Tell me thy name, and tell me now.

'Tis Love, 'tis Love! Thou diedst for me! I hear thy whisper in my heart: the morning breaks, the shadows flee. Pure universal Love thou art; thy mercies never shall remove, thy nature and thy name is Love.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE Genesis 32:1-13 Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!” So he named that place Mahanaim. Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom. He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now. I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.’” When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well. He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.” Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’ I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’” He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS (10:30am) Yvonne Banducci, Susie Brousseau, Susan Brown and Don Luke, Ruth and Regis Dugue, Beverly Everist, CJ and Carroll King, Laura Justus and Smith McClure, Vickie and O’Neill McDonald, Brenda and Jim Ruud, Joanne Storbeck, Kara and Howard Thomas, Faye and Les Wilkes, Cory and Gary Zimmerman PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Genesis 32:22-32 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon. page 5

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members.

NEW Women’s Bible Study Mondays at 10:00 AM on Zoom

Join us for a verse-by-verse expository Bible study of 1 Corinthians. 1 Corinthians challenges believers to examine every aspect of their lives through the lens of the Gospel. First Corinthians begins by addressing the people of God as those who are "sanctified by Christ Jesus, called to be saints" or "holy ones" (1Cor. 1:2) And yet, in his absence and in the presence of a corrupt culture many problems developed in the church which Paul felt compelled to address. In his letter, he shows how widereaching the Gospel is in its applicability to every area of life and how, as Christians, we can live to glorify God in our home, church and community relationships. For more information or to sign up please contact Cathy Hoxie at choxie512@gmail.com or call 510-207-1544.
